They went full Amorphis with this one, combining their typical sound with very experimental stuff like synth and surf guitars, and the overall psychedelic death'n'roll mishmash actually does work. The growling vocals feel very out of place now.

You've got a lot of guts. Let's see what they look like!

This is getting ripped on by some people for the same reason Anathema still manage to bring out haters with every release that isn't doom metal but this is some surprisingly solid stuff. Loads of 70's psych/prog rock influence with that era-appropriate keyboard tone, an underlying sense of gothic/doom-tinged atmosphere, thick and groovy bass lines pulling from groove metal, all combining to support a buried death metal vocal delivery by Rami Jämsä. Did not expect this genre mashing fusion to be executed in this way nor for it to work so seamlessly but I'm into it.

Cheers to Troy for bringing this to my attention. Convulse have been flying under my radar for many years, I only have very vague memories of World Without God and Reflections and all I know is that they didn't quite sound like this (a merging of psychedelic death'n'roll with progressive metal?) back then.

Call it what you will, but it's a hell of a grower and the surf rock guitars in "Chernobyl" made my jaw drop.

Even though Cynic above posted a track I liked a lot and I quoted, I completely missed the album's release. So very typically, like every year, and just about when I think I am finally done with my "best of" list, I keep discovering albums that need to be on said list.

The album is what Troy described. Awesome stuff, proves that you don't have to sound like shit if you wanna push boundaries like so many bands do.

I agree with Metal Rambo, the growls sound completely ill-fitting against the rest of the music, it's actually putting me off what is otherwise a pretty nice-sounding album

Unexpectedly good album with "Whirlwind". "The Summoning" and "Make Humanica Great Again" standing out.
