Finnish folk metallers Finntroll have really gained in popularity recently with their last two albums and have really helped put Finnish extreme folk metal on the map. After the success of the last album, expectations for this album were high.

The album kicks off with a three and a half minute introduction track that leads up to the first song on the album "Sång". Especially after the introduction leading up to it I was expecting some marvelous explosion of fast-paced extreme folk metal but the bass guitar and drums kick us into a rather dark sounding, very heavy and mid-tempo Finntroll - not what I was expecting at all. The next song comes along with rhythmic drumming and vocal introduction but there is still nothing with the bounce and fun sound as on previous albums. On first impression it would seem that the fun-loving Finntroll have turned into some kind of methodical dark machine.

It seems to me this is where finntroll started to experiment with their sound a bit more. Not to say that the previous records weren't varied, it's just that this one (in terms of songwriting and musical instrumentation at least) seems to have a bit more 'depth'. It's not their best, but songs as deep and indeed enticing as 'Kvallning' and 'Ormhaxan' show finntroll as a band fully embracing their more progressive side. With 'Nifelvind' i believe they went to a more straightforward approach.

This is the album that, for me personally, marked the return of Finntroll, one of my beloved bands. Even though it wasn't the return to the roots but rather something akin to the rebirth of the mighty phoenix. That was the impression I received while listening to this record - "Finntroll are back. And darker than ever before".

I don't know why some people aren't too fond of this album. I honestly feel it might be Finntroll's third best album. Maybe it's just a bit too experimental for some but I feel as though many of these songs really spoke to me, it's one of the few albums where I have a fun time all the way through. Even if many people like this album less I love it a lot.
