After a somewhat lukewarm reaction to The Silent Circus, Between The Buried And Me stepped into the studio with a vengeance, not to mention Victory's increased marketing on programs like Headbanger's Ball. Alaska represents a band still experimenting with various alternative and extreme sounds. What more could you expect from a metal group that takes their name from a Counting Crows song? However, this album takes all previous elements and greatly cranks up focus on the bigger picture. Chaos is distinctly more ordered and instrumental tracks like wispy "Medicine Wheel" and jazzy "Laser Speed" flow much more seamlessly with the violence.

Listened to this album one and a half times, and it already sounds pretty good.

Amazing metalcore, with some slight prog elements starting to show in the bands songwriting

I'd say Colors barely edges this one out. This one is way more aggressive though.

Selkies: The Endless Obsession is the only track on this album worth anything more than the seven I have given the album as a whole. Impressive and worth more seven years ago but now the album pales in comparison to their newer ones. Seven years ago this album was definitely worth at least an eight but Between the Buried in Me have came a long way since this and are now far more impressive as a whole. However, I will say Selkies is one of the best tracks they have ever wrote.

Never rate anything a 10 because there is always so much more to come. If I ever rate anything a 10 don't hesitate to slap me :P

Might give it a re-listen, but I remember finding this album really distasteful

You are entirely entitled to your opinion, but given some of the stuff you have noted liking I would definitely give this album at least one more spin. At the very least I would be surprised if you rate it below a 7. Also, have you heard Colors?

I've always thought the "heavier" passages of BtBaM felt...forced. It's not their area of expertise IMO. If they cut that out, they'd probably be among my favourite bands.

This album is probably their "heaviest", so...

Really close to a 9...so strange how tastes evolve. I actually hated this album a few years ago

Edit: My post was last year?!

I thought you might reconsider. Honestly, I didn't like this album the first time I heard it either. Great stuff, time forgives.

time forgives.

Sadly a lesson only learned...with time.

I couldn't listen to hard vocals at first (shit like, swallow the sun, dragonian) etc.

I only listened to Anathem and my Dying bride stuff.

Oh boy...
