After a 3 year or so hiatus Turisas is back with an epic masterpiece that undoubtedly blows there previous effort completely out of the water.

Before I get into the different aspects of this album I should quickly explain the storyline to this album for those who don't already know (it is a concept album). To sum the storyline up its simply a group of vikings on a journey for the sake of going on a journey, exploring and such, and every now and then focus' on the main character-Hakons reflections and inner thoughts about his life and trying to find his name.

With a "drakkar" on the cover art, you know this is Folk Metal from Scandinavia. I haven't been too immersed into this booming musical genre; as the few bands I tried to listen to all failed to really impress me. Korkiplaani bores me, Finntroll is not my cup of tea, Tyr sounded promising, but I quickly forgot about them. Folk or Pagan Metal has been rampaging the European scene recently, with countless bands displaying their Norsemen roots, with songs filled with epic battle lyrics and imagery full of medieval paraphernalia.

I've only listened to Battle Metal, and that shit turned me off so hard I think I had a reverse boner. ... Seriously though, it was just...too epic. Like, I get it, you're going into battle. You don't need to one-up the entire DragonLance franchise with each song.

When I discover something that epic, I just find it laughable, and I want there to be humor in it so I won't be left with the belief that the persons responsible for making such an overdone work are actually serious about it. If there existed such a thing, I suppose it would be a series of albums based on this comic.

And that would be epic as ffffuuuuuck, only in a good way.

lulz XD

But yeah, I don't really care too much about it being overdone or whatever as long as the music has an epic and believable atmosphere (in my opinion, their stuff is exactly that), whether it's battle-like or has a more soothing adventuring kinda mood (like the more folky Bathory I've heard). In fact, my impression of this music isn't even that "battle-like". I imagine myself just sitting around a pub listening to them singing about their battles and stuff. Intense, but sorta oddly relaxing and fun. I dunno... I could care less how "serious" they intended to make this music; at least they aren't Manowar. D:<

I'll check out that comic though. Looks neat... and it better be funny... OR I KEEL U. >:[

FWIW, I'm not into this genre at all, but The Vag Way is actually pretty decent. It sounds nothing like Battle Metal, fortunately

I get the appeal, but it's too power metal for me. I prefer Equilibrium: same aesthetic but with extreme vocals.
