As metal’s flirtations with the saxophone have intensified in the past decade or so, few bands have more effectively married the genre and the instrument than White Ward, and False Light is another true reflection of their talents.

I listened to the first 5 tracks last night from the Youtube stream. It sounds pretty run of the mill IMO. Standard post-black with good marketing from the BaN boys.

I listened to the first 5 tracks last night from the Youtube stream. It sounds pretty run of the mill IMO. Standard post-black with good marketing from the BaN boys.

The black metal vocals are a bit run of the mill (although a different clean vocal style plays a prominent role in "Cronus") . But everything else sounds pretty great to me!

The saxophone and occasional audio samples are a nice touch. The guitar-work is solid, with some really nice heavier moments (also on "Cronus") and atmospheric moments (and I think "Echoes In Eternity" is a reference to Pink Floyd's "Echoes"). (Actually, the beginning of the title track with that groovy sax makes me think of Pink Floyd "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" as well )

And what really stands out for me is the drumming - I'm no expert on drumming, but just listen to how fast that guy is going on "Phoenix" (where the album really hits its stride IMO)

In conclusion, a really impressive album, I'd say. And if you've only listened to the first 5 songs, I'd suggest checking out the epic title track - the song structure is kind of messy, but every instrument and vocal style of the album gets a chance to shine!

It's certainly an impressed release, there's a lot going on, and all kinds of genre fusions, I particularly like the jazz influences, but there is also some progressive aswel as the obvious post black, also this is some of the most well written songwriting I've heard so far this year, that's along with Kardashev's earlier release.

It's not the most exciting listen for me by any means, but it's rather a remarkable progressive journey, full of deep thought and emotion, with lot's of detail that requires full attention.

I do agree that the vocals are run of the mill, but I do love what I did with everything else. It's emotional and that saxophone. Never thought a saxophone would be so emotional.

Meh. It was decent, but not great. Maybe I need to be in a different mood and a few more listens will have it catch on for me. I'll have a few more go's at it and then maybe revise my rating. Vocals are definitely meh, that won't change

Would it kill a post metal band to begin a track without minutes of indistinguishable ambience? Just cut to the chase and spare the insufferable boredom.

It's funny how much shite Shade Empire got for using a sax but this being post (🤮) metal is automatically AOTY material.
This is why I don't hang out with metalheads anymore. Honestly 🤦‍♂️

Love the first track and the two that follow are very worthy. The other five tracks are quite good, but nothing that makes me want to revisit it. Do other albums have interesting tracks like the first three?

I'm guessing SE = Shade Empire, as Morbid Angel mentioned them above as well
