I like To A Breathless Oblivion myself. The chorus is sweetness.

I dislike the 99% part of metalcore and I gave this a try because of the melodeath approach. Actually this is good, very good. In tracks like Deathmask Divine , Of Darkness Spawned, What A Horrible Night To Have A Curse, there are some really nice riffs and breakdowns while vocals are playing a nice role.

Almost as bad as Slaughter of the Soul. After all they're (At the Gates) the ones to blame.

Quite amazing. Really intense from top to bottom. I really like the nerdy subject matters, like the Castlevania song (Horrible Night to have a curse), or the horny necromancer one (Deathmask Divine), and of course the title track Nocturnal which is amazing in every way. The vocals are quite weird and unique, and the guy loves to put vocals on almost every fucking second of the album, but they are varied enough. I especially love that part in Nocturnal when he screams "Nocturnal Majesty, sworn to black will always be" and he sounds like an angry Donald Duck... fun stuff

Easily the best Black Dahlia Murder album IMO. Also, I don't hear what's "Metalcore" about it?

The guitar playing is cool. I can't stand the vocals though. it might grow on me still, who knows?

Funny to see a comment on this record today, listened to it today for the first time in years - still a very good album. those first two tracks are such a strong opening

The album cover reminds me of Necrophobic Mark Of The Necrogram.
Is their some connection between the two bands?

I discovered Necrophobic after the singer of TBDM shared 'Blinded By Light, Enlightened By Darkness' on his FB page, but apart from that, I don't believe so - this came out a decade before the Necrophobic albums with the similar artwork, so if one was inspired by the other, it would be Necrophobic inspired by this

The only direct connection is that Necrolord (Kristian Wåhlin) created both cover artworks.

I knew this was supposed to be great, I just didn't know how great. Turned out it's complete asskicking intensity from the beginning to the end, barely any quieter moments at all. It's just quality riff after quality riff with zero bullshit.

This is lean and mean, relentless from beginning to end. It's a bit one note but god damn it's good.

What a Horrible Night to have a Curse is truly one of the best songs ever made. "Unholy inversion of hope, turning the faith of the meek into hate." So awesome.
