Epic Album Closers
Epic Album Closers
Some albums are really good. Many of these are good all the way around. And, in many cases, there is a single song that stands out, sometimes it's the last song on the album. This is a list of those songs.
For a more in depth look at this, I've codified each into a given category:
Type 1 - 'The long song at the end.' Often the title track. These have a tendency to be most well written and dynamic pieces on the album.
Type 2 - 'The different song.' This one doesn't exactly sound like the rest of the album. It might be the sole melodic moment on an otherwise atonal album, or it might be an interesting instrumental. These are, however, rarely the best track on the album. The ones included here are some of the better ones.
Type 3 - All others. All of the songs are good, but this one happens to be the best.
Type 0 - 'Almost the last song.' This case occurs when the climax hits just before the final song, which often happens to be more of an 'afterward' kind of thing rather than a full fledged piece. (Arena with The Visitor)
Note: this list excludes trivial cases (crimson, loddod, etc.) as well as type 0, though I'm considering changing my mind on this.
Edit: I've included some type 0's. I'll update this list as i get new stuff.

Porcupine Tree, In Absentia is probably the most perfect of them all.
