This album... This album was THE thing that (along with Carcass' "Heartwork") defined melodic death metal. It marks a significant change in this previously recognized but ordinary death metal band with an occasional melodical throw-in. The songwriting improved by leaps and bounds (mainly thanks to the Bjorler brothers) and, although it has only 6 original tracks and an additional 6 live tracks (and therefore feels a bit like an EP), they are as worthy as any entire album that is considered a milestone in the history of metal. Why?

A great album, but as it only has six songs and three live tracks, i feel as if its more of an EP. Nonetheless, the title track and 'The Swarm' are well executed songs, proving the distinct transition from the rawness of the preceding album and the pride of 'Slaughter of the Soul'.

Incompleted version of SotS. Most things are the same, with a little bit more death metal elements. This means the album couldnt be bad cuz SotS formula is good. But theres only 6 short songs, thats not enough for a full length albums. If there are 3 to 4 more songs, it should be better than SotS.

This can be as EP to me just 5 new songs rest is live, even damn good old school melodic death metal whit bleeding troth from growling. IMO Tomas "Tompa" Lindberg has most extreme siming sand vocal style in MDM
