The progressive nature of Enslaved, the exploratory nature of Dodheimsgard, and the psychedelia of Oranssi Pazuzu. And yet Hail Spirit Noir have never been about sounding like other bands, and Fossil Gardens is no exception.

2024 is shaping up to be an amazing year for atmospheric black metal. Wormwood, Labyrinthus Stellarum, and now Hail Spirit Noir with Fossil Gardens are all tapping into grand emotions of awe, wonder, and transcendence—a refreshing take on black metal’s usual bleakness and misanthropy.

If you’re ever pessimistic about metal's future, you’re not alone. Each week, I explore each and every one of the new releases on this site. Occasionally, I discover hidden gems, but 95% of the bands I hear are confined to genre expectations. Not every artist needs to innovate, but those who do deserve our utmost attention. Hail Spirit Noir belongs to the pioneers, not by completely reinventing the wheel but by combining genres with a clear, ambitious vision that is absolutely refreshing.

Contender for AOTY incoming. I'm super excited to hear what they've come up with this time because the evolution of their sound feels so natural from album to album.

It's not out yet Nejde. You can't be calling out AOTY before release The expectations you're putting on your ears!

I said contender and sure I can. They're one of my favourite bands and they haven't released a single second of bad music, including the synthwave album Mannequins. I can't see how this album will disappoint me. I'm quite confident that it will be there among the top albums by the end of the year. And here's the proof. First single just dropped.

Awesome, I can add them to growing list of amazing bands releasing music this year! I also think this is one of the promising albums coming up, like Nejde said they haven’t disappointed yet so no reason to think this one will be any different

Amazing news. I was just thinking about them a few days ago, wondering whether they are up to something because they had been radio silent for a while. Beautiful artwork, once again, splendid new song. Just like Nejde, my expectations are limitless.

This band has such an extraordinary array of sounds and influences unlike any other band out there, and this could possibly be their most bizarre and extreme to date. It's like Tiamat, Ghost, and Thy Catafalque came together for the ultimate progressive psychedelic black metal collaboration.

Been spinning this non-stop since yesterday and it's just as phenomenal as I expected it to be. They just go from clarity to clarity with every new album. I don't think they could release a bad song even if they tried their hardest. Hands down the best album of 2024 so far. Can't see which band and album that is gonna top this.

I don't think it will surpass Pneuma. Is it?!

I had a good run with Mayhem in Blue as well.

Hype is engulfed. Will check to see if these chaps are right or have gone bonkers.

This band has a style that perfectly mixes other styles to create its own. It's not every day that I listen to such a unique album, although in metal only, there is no shortage of surprises.

I prefer Pneuma by far. But this album is really good.

Also, "Fossil Gardens"... what an amazing and evocative title. They came up with that themselves, apparently. I googled the phrase and it doesn't seem to be a reference to any obscure science fiction novel or any IRL location or anything. These guys know what they are doing and they're damn good at it.

Really enjoy the clean sung passage midway into The Road To Awe, gave me slight Crossroads vibes. Not sure I enjoy it quite as much as Eden In Reverse (the album that was my HSN breakthrough), but it's a very solid album, and it being slightly more blackened than Eden In Reverse (at least from my memory of that album) isn't a bad thing

The album is wonderful. There is no band out there like HSN. Lying on the beach, staring at rhe sea and listening to "The Blue Dot" is priceless.

It's okay but definitely their weakest album yet. I find some songs really annoying, like "Curse You, Entropia".

I think this is a solid album, however I agree that "Curse You, Entropia" is one of their weakest songs.

This is the first time I've been disappointed by HSN, purposely excluding that random synth release. The band has released enrapturing, mystical, epic music since their debut, with no two albums sounding quite alike. In comparison, this sounds...boring. It hardly even sounds like them, barring a few nods to their usual musical whims. Considering the ratings, I definitely seem to be the minority though...maybe I'll give it a few more tries
