Boundaries are there to cross. Especially in music. If they wouldn't be crossed all the time, you all wouldn't be reading this review, and that would be a damn shame, wouldn't it? Nowadays, one of the most extreme music is played in the realm of Doom Metal. Combining the slow, agonizing Doom with the inner annihilation of Drone, these bands have created a genre that it is definitely not for the weak.

Hell yeah... The heat of this album is almost unbearable. Listening to this in a hot day of summer is quite brutal.

It's a very good album but I've never really found it that spectacular to be honest.

I just find it so well put together. The guitar tone and layering makes this an absolutely crushing release.

Yeah... it's the layering and the tone of the guitar that really makes this baby stand out. It sounds unnaturally hot.

Listened to this 3 times already and I have to say I think it's pretty damn boring. The intro alone is 10 minutes or so and is totally monotonous. Annoyingly so, I'd say. Barely any variety to be found here. When a short album like this feels long you know it's not clicking.

For the record, I have to say this stuff is indeed pretty damn crushing. Btw, going to give this 1 or 2 spins more (at most) to see whether my opinion changes or not.

Given the fact that this is a drone doom metal record, being monotonous and lacking variety can be good points, which indeed are in the case of this record.

Well, I like some monotonous albums (Brown Jenkins - Death Obsession comes to mind, which I enjoy immensely), but generally not that much. Same is true for the lack of variety. Both of those things I consider to be negative aspects for sure. Drone probably isn't my thing.

Yeah I wouldn't really expect you to like it, but nice of you to give it a try. Easily one of the best drone records out there for me. Absurdly crushing and emotionally destructive.

Drone probably isn't my thing.

I haven't listened to this album, but seeing someone who doesn't like drone giving it a six is quite a good sign. Now, I am not an expert in the genre at all, but from the little I know, I would definitely advise you to go straight to this if you haven't already. It's the best I've listened to that could be called similar to this - from what I can gather in the comments.

Yeah, I can't say that this is bad, but to me it's boring. Might go down to a 5 though, not sure. Lower than that is unlikely since it's just not my cup of tea and in that case a 5 is definitely a low enough score. When something is truly bad (which this isn't, judging by people who are into drone who love this), like Lulu for example, I can hand out very low scores, but almost never do I rate something lower than a 5.

About Weighing Souls With Sand: I checked it out last year or so and didn't like it at all. Way too much noise (drone) for me to enjoy. Again, drone just isn't for me. Maybe I'll like it some day, but not right now.

I've noticed, just ball busting. I second Ilham's rec of The Angelic Process though, seems like it'd be something more up your ally. Nadja as well, possibly.

I checked out one Nadja album and also didn't like it, sorry. However, that doesn't mean I won't like the other albums either. Drone might be a subgenre that I eventually will like, but at the moment I'm not eager to explore it.

The Angelic Process is much more accessible than most drone though (for me at least)

It is some of the more accessible around, same with Nadja. What I appreciate about those bands is that even though they are accessible, they are still one of the best of the genre. .P

Nadja is totally hit or miss. They have some great stuff but also loads and loads of totally average and crappy stuff. They real;ly are a band that can't kill their darlings. They want to release everything the come up with.

I haven't heard all the works of Nadja (obviously xD) but the older stuff is pretty neat and their recent albums aren't too shabby, specially if they colaborate with someone.

It is, that's why it's one of the first bands I typically suggest to people who are put off by the more uncompromising end of the drone spectrum.

I can see why. My first experience with drone was Sunn O))) and that didn't click very well. (funnily enough it was suggested to me by my high school German teacher based on the fact that I listened to Mastodon... what a connection)
Actually, I should try Sunn O))) again. I think I last tried them like 2 years ago.

Sunn O))) is definitely a peculiar creature, but strangely enough I'd actually say that they've become (slightly) more accessible over their career. The early stuff like The Grimrobe Demos and Flight Of The Behemoth would probably attract a very, very small audience, but more recent ones like Black One and Monoliths & Dimensions blend in a considerable amount of non-drone influences in the mix that might make them a bit more enjoyable for non-fans of the genre.

And big at linking Mastodon to Sunn O)))

For the first 10 mins or so I really thought this would be one for the 'miss' column as far as drone goes, particularly with the trudging slow crawl of the first few minutes, but somewhere between there and the halfway point I slowly found myself warming to it, and was actually somewhat won over by it towards the end. It doesn't work for me in the same way that DBR's Inversum or Sv/Queller by Nadja do, but it's far more up my alley than Sunn O))) as far as drone goes

Haha forgot I'd written this, re-listened to it today for the first time since and was about to write the exact same comment. Partway through track 2 it became a lot more to my liking

This gem knows how to time its impact well. Timing is an area I find towards drone and the slower side of music that's specifically built made to tamper with consciousness.

Could do with a proper release with the serious art, unlike the title-font only dullness.
