After Forgotten Tomb's first black metal EP, the masterpiece "Obscura Arcana Mortis," Herr Morbid slows down the sound of the band. He starts moving to extreme doom metal soundscapes with a sense of black metal in the vein of early Katatonia, Dolorian and a bit of Burzum's "Filosofem." Now added to their music is a touch of heart and soul through his lyrics and screams. Forgotten Tomb is not a copy-band, but a band harmonizing their influences with original ideas. The atmosphere of this debut album, "Songs to Leave," evokes suicidal thoughts and visions, depressive, desperate and bleak emotions with an intense dark feeling that is always present. The occult, misanthropic lyrical influences of their first EP are not as present, but rather combined with the new depressive music and Herr Morbid's painful screams.

Italian band Forgotten Tomb released this, their debut LP, back in 2002. It remains not only their best release to date, but arguably one of the best black/doom metal releases ever made.

This album is a mix of utterly depressing modern day doom and black metal fused together to create an intense, cold atmosphere. It is an absolute masterpiece and a must have for fans of early Katatonia, Shining,, or anyone looking for something bleak but heavy and forward-thinking.

The music is good, but it needs to be said: those screams are horribly bad and ruin the music.

the screams are what make the album so good. Unlike on the newer albums where the screams are mostly gone and it all becomes just average.

I like extreme vocals... pretty much everything really, but they really overdid it in my opinion.

Really? So you conclude the albums are worse just because of the lack of those screams?

I have to be honest though, I didn't really give this band a chance since I only heard the first song.

More that recent albums (everything after Love's Burial Ground; their best album) just became Kataclonias and lost more or less everything that made the band great.

Apart from Kataclonias also lots of Paradise Lostisms in it. Just like Wyrd lost the way when they went on that path anlso Woods Of Ypres became totally Paradise Lost and Kataonia wannabees, but with poorer riffs and song structures.

Yes Wyrd are unfortunately one of the biggest "Criminals" of becoming second rate Katatonias. Their recent albums are so flaccid it's amazing they managed to come up with Huldrafolk. Thankfully to this day I've never heard a Woods of Ypres album so I can't really comment on that but it wouldn't surprise me as a lot of bands seem to go that way for some strange reason.

not too strange from a commercial point of view seeing how many unites current boring Katatonia shifts and Paradise Lost as well

Shit, this album is fucking sick. No matter how much you spin, you gonna get older with such an empathetic eerie vicious soul crushing screams locked in your dark solitary confinement deprived of sunshine and embrace.

Never ever I can forsee FT will able to touch this grace.

Edit: icymi, in "Steal My Corpse"(my fav track) gets juicy from 7:37 to the finish. Yes, I've always get hyped listening to this track.
