If someone were to ask me for a modern thrash metal album that would be right up pretty much everyone's alley, my number one would be Relentless Retribution released by thrashers of the classic era Death Angel somewhere at the turn of the decade.

Since their reunion in the early 2000's, Death Angel have been delivering some pretty consistent groovy modern thrash, and this album continues in the same direction without sounding stale. The guitars combine the moments of super-distorted heaviness, epic leads and double harmonies quite well while the crisp production helps channel both aspects outstandingly. In a similar fashion Mark Osegueda manifests his vocal talent in full spectrum going from a very tense pissed-off screaming to clean passionate singing.

Can't wait for this. If its anything like Killing Season and The Art of Dying it should be awesome. I am a little disappointed by their current tour line up though. They're going to be playing a show near me tomorrow, but its with 4 bands I don't like. =\ *sigh*

I actually want it to be less like Killing Season. That album wasn't really that good.

Yeah I know what you mean, but Art of Dying was really good. Not as good as The Ultra-Violence or Act III, but it was still a solid effort. Well.... in my opinion I mean.

So I'm listening to the album now. Its definately better than Killing Season, thats for sure. This may be their best work since their comeback. Although I am slightly disappointed that Rob didn't do any lead vocals this time like he did on "Word To The Wise" on "The Art Of Dying".

Personally I'm not really sure about it. I ended up giving it a 7, but it's more like 6.8. There are good thrash riffs, but also lots of pointless and boring harmonized sections or plain progressions.

I don't really know what to think of this. Its ok I suppose though I thought they would release something similar to the 'thrash-funk' that they did on Killing Season coz while Relentless Retribution is thrashier, Killing Season was quite a unique sound. Here they just sound like another 101 modern thrash bands..

I think its their best since their debut. Definitely a lot heavier than anything since their debut. They seemed like they blended their old sound & their new comeback sound together into an actual plain thrash metal album, Kinda like Overkill's "Ironbound"

"Opponents At Side" is the weakest song on the album. But yea, definitely their best since their debut after hearing the whole album

"Volcanic" is a nice, short acoustic ballad with guitarist Rob Cavestany on vocals

Cool, another disappointing album released by one of my favorite bands. This year just sucks for metal

I think I'm going to stop buying new albums prior to listening because I'm tired of wasting my money.

I started doing this years ago. Way too many metal albums suck nowadays to buy blindly.

The word gen means "illusion" or "apparition." In India, a man who uses conjury is called a genjutsushi ["a master of illusion technique"]. Everything in this world is but a marionette show. Thus we use the word gen.

Great Album!

Seconded
Maybe this album isn't the greatest shit ever released, but all the songs manage to become something quite enjoyable, even if this album is not as varied as their previous release, but it has more guts in it, well, all I can say is that I like this album, just what I expected, nothing more, nothing less. Also the cover artwork is great!

I really like this album, IMO it's like a combination between the sound of Old Death Angel and Killing Season. But absolutely better than Killing Season, i love the beautiful acoustic guitar work on "Claws in so Deep" and "Volcanic". Mark voice is awesome as always and the riffs are Heavy and Melodic at the same time, that's what makes Death Angel so different of all the other Thrash Metal bands. They aren't afraid to show a more melancholic and soft side.

I know a lot will desagree with this but IMO Act III is not that great, it sounds a lot like Anthrax. RR on the other hand is all Death Angel style.

BTW i can't believe Killing Season have a better rate than this album. This album deserves a 8.5 IMO

Rob do lead vocals on track 11 "Volcanic" and yeah he's a great singer.

Although it has some decent moments, this is definitely the weakest album Death Angel have put out since their reunion. I prefer both "Killing Season" and "Art Of Dying" over the latest one...

I think it's a good album on average. It is dissapointing though that 6 great numbers, the first three and the last three, are needed to balance 6 songs that are rather boring. After a great start, the album kind of fades away. A song like eg Death of the Meek is just like a flat beer, just flush it.

The good songs however save the album. Special mention for Claws In So Deep and Volcanic, which both have some great acoustic guitar parts. The first one opens with a blazing riff and has a strong chorus. It ends with a harmonic acoustic guitar part with a nice solo. The latter is an acoustic ballad, a good one imo.

I really want to here some intelligent melodic technical brutal shredding relieved by some serene atmospheric unsettling moments

This album never quite clicked with me. I love the first three songs (although I do think they could have got away with cutting the acoustic section of the second track or making it a track in and of itself: it doesn't really add much to the song it's attached to), but, after that, the only song I really enjoy is "Volcanic".

No idea how people can say that "Killing Season" is better than this album.. I suppose this isn't exactly the thrashiest DA album, but there are some other great qualities to it; songwriting in these slower (and maybe a bit more generic metal) type of songs is pretty good and it's adds room for some memorable riffs and vocal parts. Another great quality (that plenty of people mentioned here already) are these acoustic songs/moments that don't really have anything to do with thrash metal, but are just an enjoyable addition IMO (and the same goes for the songs of "The Art of Dying")".

The albums definitely has good songs: "Relentless Revolution", "Claws In So Deep", "Truce", "This Hate", "I Chose The Sky" and "Volcanic". Though, from almost 60 minutes of length the weaker songs ("Into The Arms Of Righteous Anger", "Absence Of Light" and "Death Of The Meek") could easily be left out.

That been said, my top DA albums are:

1.Act III
2.The Art of Dying and The Ultra-Violence (shared place)
3.Relentless Retribution
