Rainy evenings have a vibe of their own: rainy evenings with entrancing atmosphere are astonishing. The wolves have returned to the throne room and the fourth chapter has been carved in stone. The highly anticipated Celestial Lineage has arrived and along with it the specialists of "Vastness And Sorrow" simply because that's what they always preserved; vastness and depth in terms of sound and an omnipresent escalating bitterness and sonorous rapture.

Not being one for black metal - the closest I came to understanding the genre was with Woods Of Ypres and Keep Of Kalessin - I decided to give Wolves In The Throne Room's Celestial Lineage a spin as a result of some widespread attention online.

I had my hopes up, and my hopes were met.

Wolves In The Throne Room are back and, somehow, despite adjusting their standard song structure from epic to more conventional length, they have managed to recapture some of the magick of their earlier albums that was absent on Black Cascade. A swell album that manages to capture and combine the ugliness of black metal with the majestic beauty of the Pacific Northwest.

Excellent album! While I think it is slightly less interesting compared to Fen's Epoch or any of the shoegazey-black metal- ambiance kind of records that have come out this year, it's definitely a highlight of my year. It's done just right. I hope I can find this in my record shop.

Nice one. Gave it a few listens, so may increase the score later

Love the songs with a "prayer" feeling.

I found it very similar to Ixion's To The Void. And I mean that in a good way. Very atmospheric.

Just because some hipsters like them, doesn't make them "hipster black metal"

Looking forward to buying this

No but there's no bigger band that appeals more to hipsters (though Deathspell Omega are giving them a run for their money) thus they are a hipster black metal band. It's not a snipe at their music, rather the culture that has grown around them.

I have to agree with you on the hipster thing, I'm not usually a black metal fan, but i love wittr!

Btw, I'm not a hipster.

This album was my first proper experience with the band and I must say that I am very impressed. The variation between the ambient elements and the more straight up black metal parts is great.

I will definitely check out the rest of their discography.

This album was my first proper experience with the band.

Mine also. I am not a big black metal fan but when I read some reviews about this album I decided to check it out. I can tell already after a couple of spins I am gonna need a few more spins to fully get what this album has to offer. Very complex and alot going on. I think I dig it...so far...

Ok, I am digging it

Can anyone with a huge background in this "genre" of music suggest any other albums I might like? As you can tell by my collection the only other thing that comes close is Lantlos?

Check out the metalgaze releases from the Awards nominees.

Also try Alda, Ash Borer, Falls of Rauros, Fell Voices, Fen, Lake of Blood, Skagos...

I'm usually online, but any time you have a question in regards to black metal and you're worried I won't catch you in the forums (since I don't lurk as much anymore), just send me a PM. It's a rare thing for me not to be able to help someone with discovering new bands.

As for my absence... I kind of quit for a while. It was going to be long-term but shit didn't work out so now I'm back.

I'm not much into atmospheric kind of black metal but, nevertheless, I enjoyed this album. I think that the chants, female singing and ambient parts fit quite well with raw black metal side of the band's music. Their previous record didn't leave any lasting impression upon me but "Celestial Lineage" managed to catch my attention, which led to a pleasant experience for me.

Was randomly thinking of ambient album syncing with BM, and thought about this one with Celestite could be the best example. Actually works quite well, even if the song lenght and structure aren't the same. Odd enough, someone already thought about it and uploaded a version:

Some moments (Astral Blood!) really benefit from those extra keyboards on the background. Cool little idea.
