Hearing that blazing black metalers Marduk had, gasp, evolved or whatever during their careers from the blurring blast beat battery of (occasional guilty pleasure) Panzer Division Marduk, I thought I'd check to see what they are up to nowadays.

Before popping the disk into the tray and hitting play, I came up with a list of expectations:

M.A.M.M.O.N was a cool song, if this album has the same quality all the time this will definitely be an improvement from Wormwood which was a good album but lacked in some parts.

Agreed, Wormwood was mediocre. Listening to this one right now...

I wouldn't call Wormwood mediocre, I liked it a lot but unfortunately it felt like some b sides from ROM 5:12 which in itself isn't that bad as I love that album. There are some meh-moments but also some of my favorite Marduk songs as well. I also give them credit for trying to make a "slow album" but still pack as much Marduk-ness as they can. It could have been a bit better, true... But it could have been waaay worse.

It just wasn't my cup of tea, nor was ROM 5:12, but this album however sounds good to me, I'm picking it up June 1st when it comes to my neck of the woods. \m/

Oh well, to me ROM 5:12 was the best thing Marduk has ever done so no wonder we differ. I thank Mortuus for that, his influence (specially from his band, Funeral Mist) since he joined Marduk has been great. Putting down the blastblastblast a little in order to achieve a more mature and complex songwriting. Not to mention that Mortuus is one of my favorite BM vocalist. Unique style.

Mortuus was a very suitable replacement when Legion left, I do enjoy his vocal work, I just guess I enjoyed Plague Angel more.

I'm not really impressed by this at all. This album is entirely too slow to be a Marduk album. Don't get me wrong, it's not like the album is without fast parts, I'm just used to the buzzsaw speedy Marduk.

Why do you think so?

Because it's a slightly more atmospheric driven mid-pace black metal album with hints of melody by a big-name black metal band that definitely shed the skin of their back catalog with this release.

Some people will love the sound, others definitely won't.

Well, I'm still curious because ROM 5:12 had many of those features too: A full 5-min ambient track, choirs, melodies and mid-pace moments...And Wormwood was just a further development into that sound.

So what you are telling isn't surprising at all.

It wasn't supposed to be any kind of surprise. :/ I'm just saying this album pretty much solidifies the fact they aren't what they used to be. I think it took me a few of the mid-pace Satyricon albums to fully come to terms with the fact they were never going to return to form.

I thought the confirmation was with Wormwood. Surprising was the wrong word... But what I wanted to tell you is that this won't be "the dividing" album, Wormwood had already that title imo.

Still, what you are telling me sounds great to me since I really enjoy the previous two albums which to me are their best and most interesting material... Although like you said, I'm aware some people will hate it.

EDIT: Then again, I guess it's how the saying goes, the third one counts.

This one is good, like anything Marduk has done for a while (even if people persist in refering to them exclusively for Panzer-era and all the "norsecore" : ).

Some very nice riffs, Mortuus great as always, varied and interesting structure. Sometimes the drums sounds like a helicopter hahaha, kinda cool

Haven't listened to it enough to make a clear statement, but one thing is sure : it's harder to get into it than with Rom 5:12 and Wormwood... Good album tho and I also tend to prefer the "modern" Marduk than the old style (you may guess I'm not a long time follower

It's been a long time ago a bought a Marduk LP but I must say that the review by Troy Killjoy is correct. Fast, catchy songs in the beginning, and as the album approaches his end the songs become more slow and less
catchy. Neverless, this is a great LP from a (still) great band. I don't know how to rate but I give it 8.
