The defendant rose; his face a blank expression. His lawyer had a concerned look about him. The whole courtroom seemed to be frozen in time. The judge took no joy in delivering the verdict. A weak voice to match his scrawny body slowly spelling it out: "The defendant has been found guilty of musical oversight." You get the picture; I miss the boat on this release. I got so used to hear Paradise Lost experiment with their sound in the early nineties I almost forgot how awesome their song writing can be when applied to good old heavier Gothic Metal era Draconian Times. So my self-inflicted sentencing is to listen to their latest offering until I weep. The only problem is that I keep weeping of joy and I cannot stop listening to this album. Tragic Idol blew my mind from the first note to the last. Whatever was lost about this heavenly band has been fully recovered.

Tragic Idol is Paradise Lost's 13th full-length release?yes you read right 13! This prolific band just keeps on getting better with every release. I had the pleasure of witnessing their live performance at this years Soundwave Festival, they were fantastic with ever song they had the power of an extremely young band but the musicianship of an extremely grown and mature band, they are one of the most under-rated bands in the metal scene, they deserve to be as big as Metallica. The reason why I believe they have stayed so consistently great, is due to the fact their line-up has basically never changed, apart from the drummer who has changed several times, this allows them to have such a musical connection that can progress in such a way that a band with many line-up changes just can not. However this is not to say that a band without line-up changes will stay consistently good, there are a lot of examples that I could mention however I will not in this review.

Am I wrong?

Not at all.
I personally think this is a pretty solid album, although I did expect better after their previous one. Tracks 4-7 are quite meh, if they were better, this would really be a killer album. "Solitary One" is especially awesome, one of PL's best overall.

I bought the album today, and I'd say it's very good - like most of PL's releases, it will probably need a few listens to fully appreciate (which others have also suggested). Even heavier and darker than their previous 2 albums, but of course with a strong sense of melody, although less immediate 'hooky' choruses perhaps.

Very "meh" feeling about this one. :/

Same, it was alright, but nothing really grabbed me.

Instantly catchy, quickly boring for me. Sadly a classic with Paradise Lost.

Can't stop listening to this album... all the tracks are awesome. Definetely one of 2012's best, and one of PL's best too.

My favorite band, but this album lacked something, i miss their experimenting, i have to admit i miss symbolic and self titled, i did want PL to be heavier again but without losing the other great elements they picked up along the way, i miss all the keys and the atmospheric stuff, over all i wont deny though it was a very good album.

Three years ago "Faith Divides Us, Death Unites Us" made me come to love the music of Paradise Lost again. Now, after listening to "Tragic Idol" I can only say "alas"...
The only song I like on this album is Theories From Another World (probably 'cause it doesn't sound like a usual PL song). Not a bad album but somewhat of a disappointment for me.

Sounds different from icon and draconian times, more doom. The vocals are also great, he sings powerfully. Looks like this album is better than draconian times.... oh, and the first four tracks are epic.

I can't connect with any of the songs >.> I think they are trying to get back to their older sound, but that doesn't mean it's the guaranteed formula for success...

Finally listened to it as well, and yeah, it does sound like they were trying too hard to make another Icon. As a matter of fact I was expecting Nick to belt out the lyrics of "Colossal Rains" in the middle of several songs.

I love the album, IMO, for now it's best release 2012. However I was on PL concert this year.. and Holmes couldn't manage to sing properly.. Event with great disappointment.. As I read he's known for that. Anyway we have album where he sings powerfully.

I found it a bit lazy. Pity, 'cause "Faith" was an outstanding work - clearly just a flash of inspiration in a sea of mediocrity.

It gets a little repetitive towards the end there, but the first few tracks are good. Fear Of Impending Hell is my highlight.
