This is a very modern sounding album, and 3 of the songs have no solos in them at all, so an old school sounding album this one certainly isn't. "To Be Free" is the one exception, which is a storming thrash number that could have been written in the 80's! Other songs like "Carry On" and "Gitty Up" do rattle along at a high velocity, but they are more modern thrash numbers. Especially the latter song, which sounds like a stoner-type track injected with a heavy dose of adrenalin. The former song has a bit of an old school vibe about it, so it's like a hybrid. The power ballad "Rabbit's Foot" is wonderful, whilst the title track and the closing track "Machine Gun" are great songs too.
As long as you don't mind grunge/groove inspired thrash (and I don't), then there is a lot to enjoy on this album. Those looking for an 80's throwback will likely be disappointed though.

How would you say this compares with their previous album?
I really enjoyed "The Cold"... it was different and took a while for me to get used to, because I was expecting more of a Thrash-Metal sound, but after a few listens I was hooked, and I absolutely love that album now.

"The Cold" is a more dynamic album, and a bit more melodic. "Ugly Noise" generally, is more simplistic. Some songs have no solos on them at all, and there's a few short songs on the album too. However, if you came to be accustomed with the riff style on "The Cold", then there's a good chance you will like at least some of the songs on the new album, as in that department it is similar.
I also didn't like "The Cold" much at first, but I love it now.

Funny how that happens. Thanks for all the info... little disappointed that some songs don't have solos, because I thought some of the guitar solos in "The Cold" were amazing, but I'm sure I'll still be satisfied.
I definitely plan on buying the album anyway... It would be nice if there was a quick easy way to get it right now.

Don't know, but it sounds a bit lazy for me. They can do much better than this.

I agree with you, from their Debut till now, this is underwhelming for me.

They tried to do something different (again), how can a band change their musical direction all the time like F&J It's not so amazing and I'm close to agreeing with Marcel that all these attempts at making a proper album since No Disgrace has been in vain. Well, Ugly Noise wasn't a superb album and I think I've listened it before without remembering it, it hasn't brilliant songs and this is just continuing the band's career.
