There were fleeting moments of enjoyment but overall it was meandering and whiny.

Much more commercial than any other QOTSA album, but even so, almost perfect!

First listen left me rather cold... I'll go back to listening to Them Crooked Vultures' arguably superior debut.
Edit: Yep... it really manages to sound way more like QOTSA should than this new record.

I liked it, Although I prefer the more riff driven sound of Songs for the Deaf.

I almost fully agree with you, only except the part "almost perfect", cause to me it is perfect;d I don't know what's goin' on, but I just can't stop listening to this;d "I Apear Missing" is fuckin' awesome track;d

So, my favorite song is "Smooth Sailing", but here's the thing. The lyrics seem to depict an egotistical maniac that is bent on cutting corners and trouncing the meek in his path. But, then it alludes to "No One Knows" from Songs For the Deaf ,somewhat, in depicting prescription medication as, in my estimation, faulty. Faulty is, at this point, as best as I can describe it. In the song I mentioned, "Smooth Sailing", the egotistical jack-off legitimizes all his actions in the name of God and seemingly tells those he bullies to "follow the prescriptions" handed down by the God. My take is that those that follow the advice of their doctors are inferior and are ultimately the ones being bullied around. Has anyone read the lyrics and interpreted them similarly or am I just out of my mind? The lyrics just really reverberated with me, in a negative light ultimately, but reverberated nonetheless. I'll accept a condemnation of insanity upon review of this post.

The thing is that this album is far from being a riff-driven one. It's pure magic of the lyrics and concept. A great addition to QOTSA career and a step further from their habitat, doing it great. They almost sound indie/blues rock with songs like "If I Had A Tail" or "Smooth Sailing" (this one is clearly a The Black Keys scene).
I love it.

Never enough to make an album good in my opinion.

I was too busy dancing to read the goddamn lyrics.

Still undecided between this album and Songs for the Deaf as the best album of their discography.

Their best record since Songs for the Deaf. Maybe not better, but easily one of my favourite records of the year.

This album is NOT Metal!
There's a lot of shit that isn't exactly metal on this site. Just because it isn't straight up "METAL" doesn't mean it isn't worth taking a look at

On a personal note, I didn't find this that exciting. "Keep Your Eyes Peeled", "I Sat By The Ocean", and "I Appear Missing" are the only tracks actually worth listening to.

Yeah easily their best since SftD and even more nuanced and melodic than that. This album is further proof that Dave Grohl should play drums more and even better should just stick to it. Also the list of guest and session musicians here is phenomenal. Make sure you note it while listening, would be really interesting that way.
