Extreme folk has become a relatively recent passion of mine. As such, there was no lack of content to experience when I began my exploration. I fell hard for everything from the more traditional black stylings of Enslaved and Borknagar to the bombastic and sometimes silly Ensiferum and Equilibrium. But for every worthwhile group, there can be tens to hundreds of generic imitators. Even groups that once offered an impressive and fresh look at the style have since gone stale. I was beginning to feel like everything that could be said about epic battles had already been told. Then I discovered Tengger Cavalry. The pace is great and the joining of rock'n roll riffing with the Mongolian instruments is just stellar. Totally epic atmosphere without succumbing to the cheese associated with similar acts like Equilibrium. It's much more morose, but in a good way. I can visualize the gorgeous landscapes and bang my head at the same time. Guitar tone is gritty and reminiscent of 90's black metal, even if the riffing is decidedly more melodic. The vocals aren't anything to write home about, but fit the music just right. Start to finish, best folk of 2014 by far. Enjoyability=9, Musicianship=8, Innovation=9.

2 reviews rating 9 to Chinese folk metal act is something they must have in it. Also, they stood on 7th in folk metal cat in MSA. Have to listen to this.

This band is decent but if it weren't for their asiatic elements they'd be just another pindrop in the 2nd tier folk metal bucket. It actually would be pretty good if it weren't for their high school garage band level skill with a guitar as the folk elements are quite good.
