Asphyxiating. Hellish. Unrepentingly dark. How does one adequately describe a modern metal album without resorting to to the same tired cliches that are tossed out by every record label and 2-bit amateur reviewer when they want to heap praise on whatever flavor-of-the-week metal band is "redefining dark"?
A wise man once said that "two heads are better than one," and perhaps no album this year has yet demonstrated the truth of this maxim better than Skáphe². The grand result of the combination of the talented Alex Poole (Chaos Moon, Esoterica, Krieg) and the mysterious D.G. (Misþyrming, Naðra), this album is a mesmerizing journey through the capabilities of two of the best composers modern black metal has to offer. AOTY contender.
Name your price on Bandcamp. The Elder Gods are feeling generous.
Well I've been sleeping pretty hard on this album, apparently. Finally getting around to it and DAMN, the hype is totally worth it for this one. I hear Blut Aus Nord in this, I hear some BTC stuff like Volahn and Arizmenda (more so the latter), I hear some Wormlust, and there's even a bit of influence from the bands of the parties involved, sprinkles of Chaos Moon and Mispyrming here and there. Fortunately though it doesn't sound too much like any of those bands at all, very distinct identity. Wonderful release, and one that's quickly climbing to the top of my BM 2016 list

Been listening to this for quite a while but reading Che's staff pick now I almost feel this is like a supergroup, really gotta get to those other bands of these guys. But still, just like that last Misþyrming record, this one just doesn't feel that special to me. Can't figure out why but I will surely give this more spins and try to find it out.

I guess you could call it that, I was kinda under the impression that a "supergroup" is composed of at least 3 or more members, but.... whatever's clever
And I'd definitely say this one is better than that Misþyrming album, that one was good, but this is just a whole different ball game. I could be wrong, of course, but I think the really psychedelic-y, dark atmospheric approach is coming more from Poole than D.G. though, so that could explain it.... I'd definitely suggest checking out some Chaos Moon if you haven't yet

I asked the person running Fallen Empire's bandcamp if D.G. contributed anything but vocals and confirmed A.P. did all the music and D.G. just did vocals.

I had a feeling he exerted more of an influence, this does overall sound closer to his work than to D.G's. Pretty impressive, only further testament to his prowess as a songwriter in that case

All of the material was written/recorded at the same time as the first album with the intentions of the old vocalist doing vocals. I haven't really written any Skáphe material since 2014 (well, up until recently).

Haven't revisited this very much this half of of the year. Really not sure why, it's still magnificent and weirdly easy to digest. Incredibly distinctive sounding too.
Indeed, this is definitely among the best of bm this year. Enjoying it a lot more than when I first checked it out. Indeed the songwriting and sound is Wormlust/Arizmenda-esque with more leanings toward the later. Pretty outstanding tbh. 9/10 material.
That is fucking awesome, thanks for the lengthy explanation. But you know, taking that into account and then glancing at that album cover... do you think the artwork is trying to depict a victim of this brutal torture technique? It sure looks like it, doesn't it?

No shame at all in bumping it up to a 10 with this one. Seriously, what a fucking phenomenal band and album, I am foaming at the mouth for the next release
I was scrolling down and realized that I voted on this. Damn, I don't remember anything about this album

I actually had to listen to the latest ep to realize that this is fantastic. This album starts of in the vein of DsO but I think it finishes somewhere else.
