Powerwolf's lupo-hagio-crypto-satano-sacro-groovy power metal of the night has carved a fun niche for the band. The "German Catholic werewolves thing," as a friend of mine describes it, has a pleasingly dramatic flair, with all its organ-scored singalongs and Attila Dorn's stunning, operatic charisma. That wasn't enough to stop Powerwolf from dipping into realms below their potential on recent releases, but The Sacrament Of Sin pulls them back to a level more befitting their talents. I will never understand why some people get bothered about the pop sound (even with the awful "artists" from nowadays). If that's used correctly, the results can go nicely.

Let's not change a formula that works. As a big fan of Power Metal, I can't get into this band and for obvious reasons. Their pop metal orientation towards teenage girls is not something I fancy a lot. They are unique yes, I enjoy some songs once every few moths but they tend to sound all sound the same on each song and album. It's one of those band where the singers sings the same tone and just rehashes the melody and words in the chorus to create another so called anthemic song. That's not to say that they are bad and I still enjoy the title track for example which is one of the few Power Metal songs on the album. Their live show is fun as well but I don't get why they are "so" famous.

I don't know if I should consider this some sort of guilty pleasure or not, since it's so basic uninspired mainstream power-pop-whatever-metal. But on the other hand it's very enjoyable and fun to listen to, especially the song "Killers With The Cross" which finally utilizes that nice organ sound mixed with distorted guitars. Sounds cool.
