The Icelandic black metal scene has been all the rage for the past few years. Cosmic, dissonant, melodic, you name it. But it feels like the death metal side of things has been pretty much ignored. Kaleikr can still be somewhat called black metal, but they feel like a denser Icelandic black metal version of Opeth. And more.

There's some strong riffage going on in this album, already a couple of earworms after 4 spins. Track three is a journey.

Not sure I'm getting your point or the reason for the comparison. I try to keep things short and let the music do most of the talking. The average person is only going to listen to so much, and my ultimate goal is to get them to want to go check out the album. So for me, the criticism around a review should be based less on length and more on whether it gets people intrigued enough to hopefully purchase the music. Also let's face it, people are much more likely now to listen to/watch a commentary than read a written review, though I like to still offer both. Anything to get the word out.

I seriously, honestly doubt that. A review can be read in a couple of minutes, whereas a 30 minute commentary can be replaced by simply listening to a whole / 2/3 of an album. The theneedledrop, for example, has 7ish minute commentaries, which is far more reasonable.

I only listened to a few minutes of your video so I assumed that the whole 30 minutes would be full commentary which would obviously be longer than what I write here. Not meant to make any point, I was genuinely curious.

I do some like that as well (see here), but I know plenty of people who like to take this in while driving, working, etc. passively when they can't be staring at a screen. It's available on itunes, castbox, etc. for those listeners for that reason. There are also multiple bands covered rapidly at the end. I'm not making a case against written reviews, only that there are people better reached via other methods.

Gotcha, I just didn't understand what you were really asking. It actually ends up coming out to short of 20 or so minutes to discuss the album (with various clips breaking it up) and then the remainder spent on other band shoutouts. I believe there are 4 more recommendations on this one.

Not debating that there's an audience for that type of presentation, rather your idea that "people are much more likely now to listen to/watch a commentary than read a written review." Media publications still primarily rely on written form for reviews etc. and for good reason. Other than video games I would say most people would still much rather read a short review than sit through a lengthy commentary of an album, film etc.

Great find. Much gratitude to Joe for sharing it in the shoutbox when I needed it the most (after nearly a whole day just listening to Beast In Black)

This would be such a fantastic album if the production was just better. I get it: people like their Black Metal to sound like shit. I just wish there was better production since it's fucking 2019.

Nah, I'd rather keep black metal from sounding like sterile prog in 2019, and beyond. If anything, this album could do with being a bit grittier.

And I'm gonna have to disagree. It doesn't make your taste exquisite or unique because you want to listen to terribly produced music. I don't want to hear it being a big part of black metal culture because that's a load of trash.

You mean how lo-fi and creative production has been part of black metal since it began, and always has? You don't want to hear that? That doesn't make me unique or my taste exquisite, it just means I get it. Stop being reductive to marginalise people who like black metal for what it is and just stick to music with shiny production, then you won't have to complain.

I wasn't complaining. It's a legit criticism about production and it could have been fine. However, you had to open your mouth about what you want as if I am suppose to change my opinion or give a shit about your needs. Your ignorance to quality is actually a joke and you're running in like you're on your high horse, so get off it.

Hmm, well actually you opened your mouth about how you want something to sound, then I chimed in and said I how I wanted it to sound. That was two opinions about how we wanted music to sound. You were the one that got a bit personal I don't really consider your idea that black metal now needs "good" production as particularly valid, especially as black metal has probably more variety in sound and songwriting than any other genre and is doing just fine regardless. Ultimately you want something to change to suit you, so really it just sucks that it bothers you so much.

You talk like progressive death is a new thing. You should listen to Edge of Sanity's Crimson album before forsaking the subgenre altogether.

After Solstafir goes soft and plays GOOD post black metal, post rock in Iceland BM bands born more as schoolroom after rain in Chernobyl, country whit so little population where cant is biggest predator I suppose so in last 5 years many good BM came out and same like others this band is BM, but every band has own cliche what they add to music. I enjoyed this band

The death vocals sound like that of Abyssal's. Poor production somehow decreased the listening experience for me as well. However with more listens this album keeps on getting better. The songs are very melodic and quite structured for a progressive death metal album? There are some awesome guitar works interspersed throughout the album. This album also has some spectacular outros for most of the songs (the descent, internal contradiction, eternal stalemate and a never ending sunset).
