Whatever your opinion is on Darkthrone, you have to acknowledge that this duo only churns out music that they like listening to themselves. With Old Star they keep doing exactly that and, moreover, it seems they couldn't care less about common promotional practice, since no one had a copy of this album before its release for reviewing purposes.

Precisely. It is boring, monotonous and just mediocre at best. Having said that I didn't expect nothing special from them two. I got feeling that they think that whatever music they record people will be praising it just because its Darkthrone. Kings of Black Metal, Northern Scourge, gods of rocknroll, Satan, hell, fire, sulfur, demons, more fire and even more sulfur...

It just pretty fucking boring.

I really hoped he was exaggerating, but yeah that was really underwhelming.

Gonna play Fenriz Advocate here and say, well, while they are BM legends, their course has been pretty clear for a while now. The two barricade themselves in some cabin somewhere and bang out an album over a couple days influenced by whatever Postman Fen has been listening to lately.

I can understand not getting into the latest Darkthrone album, but if you have some expectations of T.H.2, that's on you.

Enjoyed the album on first couple listens, mostly because I like the concept of the approach and the deliberate move the band has made the past 15 years or so from their past.

That's not the point. I dont think anyone here is comparing this to their old releases or expecting it to be more black metal

Again (and I hate to use this argument, but I think this suits here), if any other band that is not Darkthrone released this album, no one would care a 1/10 as much (regardless of what you think about the quality). It'ld be just another passable mid paced album

That blade cuts both ways.

A lot of people bitch about the album because they are Darkthrone and wouldn't be nearly as bothered if it were just another band. There will be people who tack a point or two on the score because it's Fenriz and Ted, and there will be people who dock the release a point or two for the same reasons.

So, as with most things, somewhere in the middle lies the truth.

Me too. This one more than anything they've released for quite some time. Duke of gloat is a great fucking song partly because it has "borrowed" a riff from Mayhem and one from Burzum.

Huge amount of great riffs, really enjoyable!
Sort of similar to Arctic Thunder but a bit more memorable. I like how the band is constantly evolving within a similar style (black/heavy/doom thingy), it's quite far from the Underground Resistance, Circle the Wagons or even more compared to the Crusty-era yet unmistakingly Darkthrone.

Production is on spot, as always.

I loved 'The Hardship of the Scots' from the first listen but didn't really like this record initially. Like some others I found it dull and ponderous but after 3 or 4 spins it clicked.

One of those pieces of junk that halfway after the first listen you can tell than even if you gave it a million re-listens nothing will change. This album has a start-stop feeling to it, the riffs in the middle of the songs with that speed metal vibe try to be interesting but the beginnings of the songs and the section after the interesting riffs weigh too negatively on the whole experience. This album reminds of the early Dimmu Borgir in the way that it is boring and you wouldn't tell a difference whether your speakers are on or off.

Avoid like plague, you are better of listening to the sounds your toilet makes when it flushes.

You are not metal enough until you visit Kenya. The cradle of mankind, where man learnt first to work with stones and first enjoyed the sounds produced by banging stones which later influenced metal in all its sounds and genres.

I hate to be negative, but Darkthrone used to be leaders in their field but now they are just content - very content - to emulate their 80s heroes. For the last 20 years they have basically been a covers band.

The quality control of these riffs is just low low low. Darkthrone would be the most overrated band in metal these days I reckon. I don't expect a black metal album, but these plain Jane 'riffs' just do nothing for me.

I'm not sure they're emulating anyone. Nocturno Culto has always sounded quite like Tom G Warrior but they've always sounded like Darkthrone. You could play me a new Darkthrone album and I'd instantly know it was Darkthrone. They don't really sound like anyone else.

And if these plain jane riffs were so simplistic, so easy to write, then everyone would be doing it. Critics used to label AC/DC with the same criticism until their genius caught on.

Terrific album that just gets better with every listen.

If you are yet to reach a point where half listening to an album can enable you reach an informed conclusion about it; then you are simply not metal enough and are yet to shed your poseur skin.

Sure, it starts out a little generic but slowly gets better as the album goes on. Duke of Gloat is one of their better new songs.

If you want to talk generic Darkthrone, Arctic Thunder has as much personality as yellow snow.
