Biography

James Norbert Ivanyi is a multi-instrumentalist, teacher, producer and musician hailing from Sydney, Australia. He performed and toured with a diverse range of musicians and bands for many years before finding his voice and going solo in 2013, and has since self-released several internationally acclaimed instrumental releases, including 2015's The Matter Circumvention, 2016's, The Usurper, and 2017's Denalavis. Ivanyi released his first full-length album in 2020, Omen Faustum – and has recently finished up a brand new EP titled Sigil which was released on April 5, 2022.

He is considered by his fans, peers and industry to be one of the most original, commanding and versatile young guitarists on the scene today. His unique style of technical modern metal fused with the classic sounds of 1960’s and 1970’s progressive rock music have seen his fan base transcend generations and genres.

While not as popular as contemporaries like Plini, David Maxim Micic, Sithu Aye, or Widek, James Norbert Ivanyi feels less cookie-cutter than the slew of home brew guitarists releasing EPs these days. Ivanyi’s aesthetic really adds to the experience as a whole. Between the macabre album art and the ominous organ, his vibe definitely has a darker edge. This somewhat cryptic sensibility helps Ivanyi to separate himself within the instru-metal genus. Essentially, Ivany's target audience for this album is someone wearing an Opeth shirt, who enjoys listening to Kiko Loureiro, all while putting up Halloween decorations.

He has been invited to perform several times in the United States at the Suhr Factory NAMM party, has toured Australia numerous times, including a successful 2017 headlining tour in support of Denalavis. He has shared the stage with international heavyweights such as Soilwork, Katatonia, Haken and performed at the first annual The Guitar Collective 2017 showcase in Los Angeles in January alongside Dan Sugarman (As Blood Runs Black, Nili Brosh (Seven The Hardway), Yvette Young (Covet), Felix Martin & Angel Vivaldi.

2017 was a foundational year for Ivanyi, who had also been a part several notable recording projects – including being featured on the 2017 Scale The Summit record In A World of Fear alongside John Browne (Monuments), Scott Carstairs (Fallujah), Nick Johnston, Jeff Loomis (ex-Nevermore), Nathan Navarro, Per Nilsson (Scar Symmetry), Angel Vivaldi & Yvette Young (Covet), performed in the United States, attended NAMM (Los Angeles), and a July performance and clinic tour across Europe, including being billed at UK TECH-FEST. He embarked on a headlining tour across Australia in August to celebrate the release of the then brand new EP, Denalavis and capped it off with headlining the ‘Poseidon’ stage at PROGFEST, opening for Ne Obliviscaris and a very special performance with United Kingdom progressive masters Haken.

Following the success of 2017’s critically acclaimed Denalavis EP, Ivanyi announced he would release his new independent full-length instrumental album Omen Faustum on October 20, 2020.

Sigil is the sixth studio instrumental release by James Norbert Ivanyi. Written, recorded and arranged in Sydney, Australia during 2021 at James Norbert Ivanyi's personal home studio. Official release April 5th, 2022.
