Unearth - Part Ways With Drummer

US metallers Unearth have issued the following statement on their official website:

"After three plus years of touring the world together and playing on our latest album "The March", we have parted ways with drummer Derek Kerswill. The most notable reason for the split are the creative differences. The time has come for Unearth to write a new album and creating music with a tight unit is the only way we can assure the best collection of songs possible. The differences between Kerswill and the band started off as subtle, but became increasingly obvious over the past few months and it was time for both parties to go their separate ways.

We have shared a ton of great experiences and achieved many of the goals we set for ourselves in the time he was in the band. There is no ill will from either side of this decision and we wish him only the best moving forward.

Kerswill said: "Creative differences are real and unfortunately have gotten the best of me. I wish the guys luck in the future and thank you to everyone who ever loved + supported "The March"".

Unearth won't skip a beat, though, as we will be announcing a replacement drummer for our upcoming European stint on the Persistence Tour shortly. Lastly some exciting plans are coming together for the recording to the follow up to "The March" sometime early in 2011."

Unearth - Original Bass Player Dies In Scooter Crash

In case you haven't heard, last week original Unearth bass player Chris "Rover" Rybicki passed away. He lost his life from injuries sustained four weeks ago at the hands of an alleged drunk driver. The article reporting the incident can be read here.

Added the band: "Rover hadn't been in Unearth since 2001, but he remained a good friend to us all throughout the years and this tragedy has hit us hard.

Not only was Rover a talented musician, but he was also one of the funniest dudes you would ever know. His wit, dark humor and don't give a fuck attitude made him a unique person that we all loved having in our lives. His memory will live on amongst his family and friends with the countless stories of Rover being Rover. He will be sorely and forever missed.

Rover played on our our EP Above the Fall of Man, our debut full length The Stings of Conscience and also on two tracks off our 2002 EP Endless. We would like to take a second to urge people to not drink and drive. Please be responsible so these tragedies stop happening."

Iced Earth - An Update On The Band

Later this month, Iced Earth will be doing a four city mini-tour in the US. The show is promised to be a special night with a fan-selected Iced Earth set list, and the live debut of Sons Of Libery, the brainchild of Jon Schaffer featuring Schaffer on lead vocals. Here's the official press release:

"When Jon Schaffer does something, he does it right. Like creating an eclectic, fan-favorite set list for Iced Earth's upcoming limited-engagement U.S. tour.

"I wanted to give fans something really special," Schaffer said. "So I put together songs that include some we've rarely played live before, and at least one that reaches back to our first album. Even long-time fans of Iced Earth are going to be surprised."

Iced Earth kicks off its four-city U.S. tour on September 10 in Washington DC, followed by Chicago (September 21), New York (September 23), and West Hollywood (September 25).

But the set list isn't the only treat in store for fans of Iced Earth. Schaffer's Sons Of Liberty band, featuring Schaffer on lead vocals, makes its live debut on this tour.

"Sons of Liberty is a project that is near and dear to my heart," Schaffer said. "I'm very passionate about it. This is an opportunity for me to speak directly to the people. Hopefully, I can inspire them to look into the message and wake up to what is going on around them. This isn't about me thinking I'm a great singer or front man. In fact, through the rehearsing process my respect has only grown for Matt Barlow. Doing lead vocals presents a whole new set of challenges for me."

According to Schaffer, the response to his Sons of Liberty album Brush-Fires of the Mind has been overwhelming. It was only officially released on July 13, but already tens of thousands of copies have been sold and given away on his web site. Hundreds more are downloaded every week.

But as popular as Sons of Liberty has become, it's Iced Earth that takes center stage this month. "We haven't been this energized and passionate in a long time," Schaffer said. "We are definitely going to kick ass, and have a lot of fun doing it."

Preparing for the four-city tour isn't all that's been keeping Schaffer busy these days. He's also working on a new Iced Earth album (scheduled for release Spring, 2011), a live DVD (scheduled for release before the end of this year), and a special project he will only say fans will "freakin' love."

Barren Earth - Sign To Peaceville Records

Peaceville Records is proud to announce the signing of Finnish prog death metallers, Barren Earth. With a line-up consisting of former members of prog/folk metal legends Amorphis, as well as current members of Swallow The Sun, Moonsorrow and Kreator, the band has been busy recording their debut album at the renowned Seawolf Studios in Helsinki, with the tracks currently being mixed by Dan Swanö (Katatonia/Opeth/Novembre). An EP is due November 2009, with the album currently scheduled for an early 2010 release.

The music of Barren Earth combines elements of modern and traditional death metal, with 70's prog rock and folk. Among the band's influences are artists such as Paradise Lost, Opeth, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull and also some pioneers of Finnish prog.

Line-Up:

Mikko Kotamäki - vocals (Swallow The Sun)
Olli-Pekka Laine - bass (ex-Amorphis, Mannhai)
Kasper Mårtenson - keyboards (ex-Amorphis, Ben Granfelt Band)
Janne Perttilä - guitar (Rytmihäiriö)
Marko Tarvonen - drums (Moonsorrow)
Sami Yli-Sirniö - guitar (Kreator, Waltari)

On signing to Peaceville, bassist Olli-Pekka Laine commented: "Getting signed by Peaceville Records is a great honour, as they are one of the very few metal labels left who have a passion and feeling for the music they release. To us, it also feels like coming home, because in a way they carry a big responsibility for Barren Earth's existence by having released the most important albums from pioneers such as Autopsy and Paradise Lost. Those albums played a huge role, when we sucked our musical mother's milk in the late 80's and early 90's. This is a fact that should be noticeably evident in Barren Earth's sound and music. Hopefully Barren Earth will also be able to add a fresh spin to Peaceville's already impressive roster".
