Metallica - Interview Canceled After Pirate Bay Row

It seems that no matter how hard they try, Metallica will continue to make anti-piracy headlines. After their bloody battle with Napster years ago, they were determined to keep calm when their latest album, 'Death Magnetic', inevitably hit the torrents. This time, Metallica's Lars Ulrich shocked everyone by saying: "If this thing leaks all over the world today or tomorrow, happy days. It's 2008 and it's part of how it is these days."

Despite this effort, it hasn't taken long for people to start a dispute over piracy. According to a report, Metallica's label, Universal Music, canceled an interview the band had planned with the Swedish newspaper Sydsvenskan last week, after a writer there, Jonn Jeppsson, sparked off an anti-piracy row featuring him and The Pirate Bay.

Instead of reviewing the official version of the album, Jeppsson used an unauthorized cut called "Death Magnetic: Better, Shorter, Cut", which contains the same songs as the original, but shortened. If reviewing an unofficial copy wasn't enough, Mr Jeppson clearly enraged Universal when he admitted in his review that he downloaded his copy off The Pirate Bay.

Metallica's label Universal was not pleased, to say the least. Talking with Dagens Media, Universal Sweden's Per Sundin said: "The reviewer is referring to a torrent where someone has altered the original songs. The reviewer explains exactly where one should go in order to download the file that is totally infringing copyright. It's not only an illegal file, but an altered file. The reviewer also writes that this is how the album should have sounded."

Hinting that Universal may stop sending promo material for Sydsvenskan to review he ends: "We live in symbiosis with each other and we send them our artists' record for free for review. But if they download the albums illegally instead, then there's no point in doing that."

Kreator - Reveal New Album Title And Release Date

The rolling thunder is growing louder and great events are foreshadowed again:

Germany's most eminent thrash metal act, Kreator, are set to release their latest studio album on 16 January 2009 (Europe: 19 January, US: end of January). "Hordes Of Chaos" is a powerhouse featuring rigorous thrash attacks and Kreator's familiarly intelligent lyrics about self-determination and the dangers of contemporary war propaganda. Kreator are also scheduled to embark on another major European tour as early as January 2009.

"Hordes Of Chaos" was recorded at Berlin's Tritonus studios under the direction of producer Moses Schneider. Schneider is renowned for his fresh and exceptionally dynamic working methods with bands and artists such as Beatsteaks and Tocotronic. "We consciously decided on Moses as our producer for the live recording of the basic tracks at the studio," band mastermind Mille Petrozza explains. "This was the first time since "Pleasure To Kill" that we worked in this way. The new album is a 100% realistic reflection of Kreator's live qualities. Instead of exploring every little detail to sterile perfection with the help of computer technology, this time around we wanted to deliver as dynamic a production as possible. There can be no doubt that we've achieved our target in "Hordes Of Chaos"."
The album was mixed in London by Colin Richardson (Slipknot, Bullet For My Valentine, Cradle Of Filth, etc.).

The new studio album will be available in three different versions. The jewel case edition includes the ten regular album songs, and the deluxe version features an additional bonus DVD with an atmospheric making-of in super-8 quality courtesy of a Berlin film maker. As a third option, the ultra deluxe version, comes with a t-shirt, a worthwhile photo book and an extended version of the bonus DVD, as well as the CD.

As early as January, Kreator musicians Mille Petrozza (guitar, vocals), drummer Jürgen 'Ventor' Reil, bassist Christian Giesler and guitarist Sami Yli-Sirniö will embark on their two-month European tour alongside Caliban and Eluveitie. So you'd better fasten your seatbelts when the "Hordes Of Chaos" steamroll through the country!

Alestorm - Guitarist Quits

Guitarist Gavin Harper has announced his departure from the Scottish folk/power metallers Alestorm. He commented his decision:

"While I'm a bit shocked that this was announced before the record label knew and anyone in the band had actually talked to me about it... that and after being a founding member, i had to find out about my resignation becoming official from the Myspace page.

In my time in this band, from doing the first ever recording to not appearing on the latest one...I have always strived to make Alestorm my priority and put it ahead of many other things in life that have been more important to me in order to help Alestorm be as big as it is now.

In this time, and in my attempts to keep my band members thriving in the music industry and taking advantage of everything, i have nearly bankrupted myself, been pushing new levels of unhappiness and had countless sleepless nights trying to plan routes for the guys within the budgets we have received.I have been struggling with personal differences with some members for a while and just feel that it is for the best if i make way for someone willing to put up with this.

I have recently taken up residence in a new country and have a lot of new responsibilities as well as a lot of new opportunities and i feel that it is now time to follow what i want rather than constantly struggle and sacrifice that which belongs not only to myself, but to all the loved ones that i have had to borrow from and rely on to keep Alestorm in the music business.

I will be back with new projects, signed or not, it's now time that music becomes fun again and i will be making a lot of music in the near future!"

Týr - Album Re-Release

As posted on the band's website:

"Out of print for many years, Týr's early musical signs of life are almost as secretive as the band's reclusive homeland, the Faeroe Islands. Yet fans of Týr will finally be able to also embrace their early works. The re-release "How Far To Asgaard" comprises not only the debut album of the same title, but also the single "Ólavur Riddararós" (2002). Both releases deliver the ingredients that fans of the Viking Metal genre have come to love and expect, including sweeping vocal lines, diverse songwriting, and extraordinary musicianship, as well as new artwork that fits in perfectly with the album's lyrical theme. Witness the birth of a Viking Metal legend!"

Visceral Bleeding - Part Ways With Guitarist & Seek Replacement

Swedish metallers Visceral Bleeding have issued the following update:

"Due to Martin 'Germ' Bermheden's busy schedule with The Berzerker, we've decided to part ways. The decision was mutual since we need everyone in this band to put Visceral Bleeding as their first priority for things to work and Germ felt that this was no longer possible for him. We wish him the best of luck with The Berzerker and all of his other projects.

We are now looking for a new lead guitarist who has the skill, drive, energy, time and passion that is needed to be in this band. If you feel that you might be the right man for the job then send us an e-mail (info visceralbleeding com) and tell us a bit about yourself and why you would like to join this band. Please also include links to bands that you might play in, music you've recorded or videos you've posted of yourself on YouTube if you have any."
