Defiance - Sign To Candlelight Records

Candlelight Records announced the signing of Oakland, California-based Defiance. The band, currently featuring vocalist Steev Esquivel (Skinlab), guitarist Jim Adams, bassist Mike Kaufmann and drummer Mark Hernandez (Vio-lence, Forbidden), has started early tracking of their new album at Triden Studios and Greendot Studios in East Bay. The currently untitled album is expected for a Spring 2009 release.

Formed in 1985, Defiance have recorded three albums all for Roadrunner Records - Product of Society (1989, produced by Jeff Waters (Annihilator)), Void Terra Firma (1990, produced by John Cuniberti (Joe Satriani)), and Beyond Recognition (1992, produced by Rob Beaton). In 1994 the members put Defiance on hiatus allowing them opportunity to work on outside projects. In 2005 after requests from fans and new vigor on the part of band members, Defiance reunited. In an interview with popular portal Metal-Temple.com Mike Kaufmann reveals, "We have received lots of messages from fans who have said they would love to hear some new Defiance. We always felt the band broke up too early so we plan to use this opportunity to pick up where we left off".

Defiance along with their fellow moshpit peers of the 80's (Testament, Exodus, Death Angel) contributed to the rise and immense popularity of thrash metal for over a decade. In recent years with the reformations of many of the classic bands, fans have been given opportunity to re-embrace the aggressive sound of the American-flavor of the genre.

Defiance plan to finish recording of their Candlelight debut by year's end. The band expect to announce touring plans in the early part of 2009.

Orange Goblin - Sign With Candlelight Records

Orange Goblin are very proud to announce a new era for the band with the signing to world renowned metal label, Candlelight Records.

Commented vocalist/guitarist Ben Ward: "The number of vastly successful bands on the Candlelight roster is testament to the quality and the hard work that everyone involved in the label has shown us and we are very excited about settling down in a new home after the label problems we have encountered in the past few years. It's an honour to be on such an esteemed label alongside bands that have inspired us since the bands inception. I believe that with the Candlelight team behind Orange Goblin we can concentrate on writing the best material of our career and continue to tour as much as possible, hopefully reaching parts of the world that Orange Goblin is yet to plunder! We have already started writing new material for a release in 2009 and OG fans, in fact metal fans in general, are gonna love how the new stuff is sounding. It's gonna be a hugh combination of Sabbath-inspired doom, filthy biker blues and more of the familiar booze-ridden Goblin groove."

Black Sabbath - New Box Set Details

Black-Sabbath.com has posted the artwork for Black Sabbath's upcoming five-disc boxed set, "The Rules Of Hell".

A press release posts the following:

"Heavy metal pioneers Black Sabbath were reborn in 1980 when founding members Tony Iommi and Terry "Geezer" Butler added vocalist Ronnie James Dio to the lineup. The band's short but memorable time together added an unforgettable chapter in Sabbath's storied history. Rhino relives the demonic fury conjured by the Dio era with "The Rules Of Hell", a boxed set featuring all three of the band's studio releases ("Heaven And Hell", "Mob Rules", "Dehumanizer") and their double live collection ("Live Evil") - each recently remastered for the first time. The set comes packaged in a deluxe slipcase with extensive liner notes featuring all new interviews with the band. This five-disc boxed set will be available from Rhino on July 22 at all physical outlets, as well as www.rhino.com, for a suggested list price of $54.98. The set will also be available the same day at all digital outlets for a suggested list price of $24.99.

Two years ago, Dio, Iommi and Butler and drummer Vinny Appice reunited to record a trio of new songs for Rhino's Black Sabbath: The Dio Years before launching a highly anticipated and greatly acclaimed world tour under their new moniker Heaven And Hell. Revitalized by the reunion, the lineup is back in the studio now recording the first ever full-length studio album from Heaven And Hell, set to be released by Rhino in early 2009. To whet the fans' appetites for the new album, Heaven And Hell will return to the road for a short stint on the Metal Masters Tour, a month-long North American trek with Judas Priest, Motörhead, and Testament. This blistering metal juggernaut will launch August 6 in Philadelphia.

The Dio-era's first effort, Heaven And Hell, hit the racks on April 25th, 1980. Greeted by ecstatic reviews, the album peaked at #9 in Britain. In the U.S., its Top 30 success gave the group its first platinum disc in six years. Opening with the chugging anthem "Neon Knights", the album also includes the epic title track, "Wishing Well", "Die Young" and "Lonely Is The Word".

The group's follow-up, "Mob Rules", was the first without original drummer Bill Ward, who was replaced with Appice. The album bristles with Iommi's signature dark riffs, Butler's elaborate bass lines, Appice's hammering behind the drums and Dio's inimitable growling. The album includes the high-octane tracks "Falling Off The Edge Of The World", "Turn Up The Night", and the title track - plus the mid-tempo rocker "Voodoo" and the slow-churning epic "The Sign Of The Southern Cross", a favorite among band members and fans alike.

Forbidden - Tour Drummer Announced

Cali's reunited thrashers Forbidden posted the following:

"Forbidden proudly announces Mark Hernandez (Heathen, Defiance, Re-Ignition, Vio-lence, Torque, Technocracy, Social Unrest), as the drummer for Forbidden's upcoming European tour. Mark Hernandez is one of the most dynamic and solid drummers in Hard Rock/Heavy Metal today. His aggressive attack and technical ability shine. Mark has proven himself over and over from his time in one of the most respected thrash metal bands of all time Vio-lence and more recently with Heathen and the rebirth of Defiance. Mark will be one of the most watched drummers in Hard rock & Heavy Metal for years to come."

Statements from the band:

Glen comments, "Mark is a bro from the Bay Area. I've been waiting for the opportunity to jam with him for years, and here we are. Mark came in the first day and blasted through 5 songs like it was nothing!!"

Craig comments, "Yes, we're all very excited about going over to Europe with Mark Hernandez behind the kit. It took us a while to sort out all of the details, so we apologize for the delay. It was rumored that Chris Kontos, whom I already have the honor of playing with in SpiralArms, was going to be Forbidden's European drummer. But that did not pan out because Chris had other obligations with Attitude Adjustment and the Part Time Christians. So we had to try out some other drummers and Mark was on Fire for the gig! He knocked us over with his audition and showed us how good he really is. This guy is going to surprise a lot of people. He shocked all of us and really did his homework. I've known Mark a long time after seeing him play with Vio-Lence and Re-igniton and most recently Heathen so I knew he had some chops. The last thing we would do is put someone onto the Forbidden drum throne who could not handle the job and pressure of filling some mighty large shoes. Obviously Paul Bostaph and Steve Jacobs would be there if they could, but Paul's in Testament and Steve is unavailable in the time frame of this tour. So Mark won the job flat out and he deserves it! So let's show him some love and respect to Mark when he bashing behind the kit with us in Europe. Make him feel welcome!"

Matt comments, "We are fortunate to land another great drummer, one that can live up to the caliber of world class drummers that we and our fans expect"
Russ comments, "Mark is a bad ass drummer that deserves a chance!"

Sabbat - Members Contribute To New Hell Album

Master-producer and veteran guitarist Andy Sneap has collaborated with fellow bandmate, vocalist Martin Walkyier of the British Pagan Thrash band Sabbat, to contribute to the new album from the reunited Hell, the early '80s UK metallers.

Andy Sneap posted the following message: "Something I'm sure you've heard both myself and Martin mention in the past is the huge influence Early 80's Derbyshire metallers Hell had on Sabbat. Things have been odd in a good way recently with alot of old friends crossing my path again, and thankfully one such friend is Kev Bower, the old Guitar player.
So, because I'm too lazy to type all this out, here's Kev's blog on what we are up to. Anyone wanting a new Sabbat album should take note, this is the only project Martin and I will be working together on in the foreseeable future."

A few extracts from the blog posted by Hell guitarist Kev Bower, regarding his band's collaboration with Andy Sneap and Martin Walkyier: "As some of you will be aware, the three surviving members of Hell are back together after 23 years, recording a brand-new album. The producer is none other than the legendary Andy Sneap - producer and mixer of over 100 metal albums, including Megadeth, Trivium, Kreator, Testament, Killswitch Engage, Cradle Of Filth... the list is almost endless, and reads like an encyclopaedia of metal. Andy is at the absolute pinnacle of his profession, and deservedly so. He's also the nicest bloke you could ever wish to meet, and it's a privelege to have him as a best friend.

The late, great Dave Halliday was sadly taken from us in 1987, and Hell could never, ever be the same without him. Andy has gone to great lengths to use every conceivable piece of modern digital technology available to lift some of Dave's vocals from these early recordings, thus ensuring that the great man will be a fixture on the album. It just wouldn't be right if he wasn't. Regarding the bulk of the vocals, though, the only guy who we could think of to do absolute justice to these songs was Martin Walkyier - he saw the band almost as many times as Andy, and only he really understood what was needed to deliver this material into 2008. Those of you who have heard Martin's outstanding performances on Sabbats "Dreamweaver" and "History Of A Time To Come" albums will instantly know what I mean. And as for Dave's guitar solos? Well - who better to replicate these, than Andy Sneap himself... Dave's finest student."
