Unearth - Original Bass Player Dies In Scooter Crash

In case you haven't heard, last week original Unearth bass player Chris "Rover" Rybicki passed away. He lost his life from injuries sustained four weeks ago at the hands of an alleged drunk driver. The article reporting the incident can be read here.

Added the band: "Rover hadn't been in Unearth since 2001, but he remained a good friend to us all throughout the years and this tragedy has hit us hard.

Not only was Rover a talented musician, but he was also one of the funniest dudes you would ever know. His wit, dark humor and don't give a fuck attitude made him a unique person that we all loved having in our lives. His memory will live on amongst his family and friends with the countless stories of Rover being Rover. He will be sorely and forever missed.

Rover played on our our EP Above the Fall of Man, our debut full length The Stings of Conscience and also on two tracks off our 2002 EP Endless. We would like to take a second to urge people to not drink and drive. Please be responsible so these tragedies stop happening."

Dream Theater - Mike Portnoy Leaves The Band (UPDATED)

Original news

In the "didn't see this one coming" department, Mike Portnoy has just announced he is quitting Dream Theater. Portnoy issued the following statement on his Facebook fan page he administers himself:

"I am about to write something I never imagined I'd ever write: after 25 years, I have decided to leave Dream Theater... the band I founded, led and truly loved for a quarter of a century.

To many people this will come as a complete shock, and will also likely be misunderstood by some, but please believe me that it is not a hasty decision... it is something I have struggled with for the last year or so....

After having had such amazing experiences playing with Hail!, Transatlantic and Avenged Sevenfold this past year, I have sadly come to the conclusion that I have recently had more fun and better personal relations with these other projects than I have for a while now in Dream Theater...

Please don't misinterpret me, I love the DT guys dearly and have a long history, friendship and bond that runs incredibly deep with them... it's just that I think we are in serious need of a little break...

Dream Theater was always my baby... and I nurtured that baby every single day and waking moment of my life since 1985... 24/7, 365... never taking time off from DT's never-ending responsibilites (even when the band was "off" between cycles)... working overtime and way beyond the call of duty that most sane people ever would do for a band...

But I've come to the conclusion that the DT machine was starting to burn me out... and I really needed a break from the band in order to save my relationship with the other members and keep my DT spirit hungry and inspired.

We have been on an endless write/record/tour cycle for almost 20 years now (of which I have overseen EVERY aspect without a break) and while a few months apart from each other here & there over the years has been much needed and helpful, I honestly hoped the band could simply agree with me to taking a bit of a "hiatus" to recharge our batteries and "save me from ourselves"...

Sadly, in discussing this with the guys, they determined they do not share my feelings and have decided to continue without me rather than take a breather... I even offered to do some occasional work throughout 2011 against my initial wishes, but it was not to be...

While it truly hurts for me to even think of a Dream Theater without Mike Portnoy (hell, my father named the band!!), I do not want to stand in their way... so I have decided to sacrifice myself and simply leave the band so as to not hold them back against their wishes....

Therion - Live Shows Cancelled

Official press release

The tour schedule has changed: The shows in Caracas (Venezuela), Chihuahua and Puebla (both Mexico) have to be cancelled and the show in Santiago de Chile has moved to the Teatro Caupolican. In Europe there will be an additional show - on the 11th of December Therion will play in Istanbul, at Refresh the Venue (which is really named like that).

The following message is from Christofer: "We are very sad to announce that the shows in Chihuahua and Puebla in Mexico have been cancelled. The situation with the drug cartels is becoming worse and worse in the north and the local authorities strongly advise against playing concerts in Chihuahua (and of course Monterray which also has been rumoured we would be playing), so the national promoter in Mexico has decided to cancel Chihuahua as the safety of the band, crew and fans cannot be guaranteed at this point. The Puebla festival has also been cancelled due to some sort of drug cartel related civil unrest problems.
There seems to be no risk for the remaining shows in Mexico and the band hope that there will be other shows to replace the cancelled ones in other parts of the country.

Seems like the world is going crazy at the moment, as the Caracas show in Venezuela will be cancelled as well. Local promoter is having economic problems and didn't want to risk fucking everything up from what I've heard. So better to cancel and try to replace it with another show in some other country than to risk standing there with thousands of fans buying tickets and maybe making a long journey from another city just to end up with no show happening. We hope we will be able to do Venezuela some time in the future, we were really looking forward to playing there."

My Dying Bride - To Release 20th Anniversary Collection

Official press release

2010 marks the 20th anniversary of the UK doom titans My Dying Bride, and to commemorate two decades of doom & gloom, the band embarked upon a project to re-work familiar melodies & themes from My Dying Bride's extensive catalogue into long, flowing symphonic compositions, including new vocals & passages from Aaron Stainthorpe. These arrangements have been brought to life in co-operation with keyboard maestro Johnny Maudling (of Bal-Sagoth fame) & will be released as Evinta, as both a 2 disc & special 3 disc set, each disc its own sprawling classical work spanning a large period of My Dying Bride's album material. The 3 disc set will also be accompanied by a specially limited 72 page hardback book featuring rare images & photographs from the band's personal archive from over the years.

Andrew Craighan commented: "Evinta: a project almost 15 years in the making. An idea that has sat smouldering and never really had a reason to burn alive until now. 9 CDs worth of darkness recreated anew to mark 20 years of My Dying Bride. Music arranged to the soundscapes of sorrows past. Finally the 20th anniversary allows us to release this music in a form it has been desperately, woefully waiting for. Enjoy the Darkness."

The set is scheduled for an October 25th release on Peaceville Records.

It's about time, and the nice thing is that we're actually rehearsed for this album, so we're pretty excited to get this thing recorded and out there. Believer - Busy Recording New Album

Kurt Bachman the mainman of US technical thrash outfit Believer has issued the following update:

"It's been quite a long time since I blogged to you. It has been a busy several months for us but happy to say that we are recording the follow up to Gabriel now! The drums are just about finished and I have many tunes in the bag for the initial rhythm guitars. Once again, the tunes are quite different and when I listen to them it kind of sounds like someone else wrote them which creeped me out at first. I really like the tunes and you will be able to tell that we stepped outside our comfort zones. Always fun to do that! We hope to finish this up in the next couple months and I will keep you posted on possible release dates once we discuss with Metal Blade."

God Dethroned - Working On New Album; New Guitarist

Just last week, Dutch death metallers God Dethroned - who recently extended their deal with Metal Blade Records - have issued the following update:

"We've been working hard on a new album lately and just finished songwriting. Our second album with a World War One theme. Mike and Henri will start laying down drum and guitar tracks at Soundlodge Studio's (Germany) with producer Joerg Uken. It's our third time recording there as we have been very pleased with the results of the previous albums.

We would like to thank Ian Jekelis (Abigail Williams) for playing guitar with us on the Killfest tour in the US where we supported Overkill on many great and successful shows. We also would like to welcome Danny Tunker as our new lead guitarist. Danny already played with us on a few shows and festivals and we decided to give him the chance to show his skills on our new album."

More news soon.

Raunchy - New Album Later This Year

Modern metal combo Raunchy will release their highly anticipated new album A Discord Electric through Lifeforce Records on September 20th in Denmark, October 8th in Germany/Austria/Switzerland, October 11th rest of Europe, and on October 12th in the US.

With uncompromising old-school thrash rhythms and potent electro-sounds, combining the hymns of modernity and tradition, A Discord Electric is the perfect metal anthem to the young and hopeless raging in a metropolis or in a redneck town all over the world. The album was produced once again by long time friend Jacob Hansen.

A short comment from the band: "This is by far the most experimental, the most challenging, and the most interesting album we have come up with since the beginning of the band. My personal take on this endeavor is quite simple actually: this album will be on the hot list when it comes out! Every member of the band has had the freedom to take things to the limits, above and beyond, and believe me, boundaries are transparent this time around, we're going totally apeshit, and you're definitely in for some big surprises with some cool guest performances by our friends in Duné on the song "Big Truth" among other exciting things", says vocalist Kasper Thomsen.

A Discord Electric tracklist:

01. Dim The Lights And Run
02. Rumors Of Worship
03. Blueprints For Lost Sounds
04. NGHT PRTY
05. Street Emperor
06. Shake Your Grave
07. Tiger Crown
08. Big Truth
09. The Great Depression
10. The Yeah Thing
11. Ire Vampire
12. Gunslingers And Tombstones
