Metal Storm Awards 2015 - Now Open

Ladies and djentlemen, it's that time of year again - the Metal Storm Awards 2015 are open for business.

The voters are about to swarm like gundarks, so be prepared to withstand the onslaught of chatter and indiscriminate, early bird vote-lobbing that will soon unfold.

For the next however many days are in February this year (lousy indecisive month), the Awards are all yours to paw through and explore. We've got an impressive array of nominees, as usual, so don't be afraid to consider the other candidates before purposefully striding right past them and voting for your favorite band anyway.

Click here for the best that Metal had to offer us in 2015. As always, feel free to discuss below how much you love us and agree with our decisions (or not).

Team MS.

Undersmile certainly are extreme doom and a lot more at that than most of the nominees in that category.

Why didn't you make any noise about them being nom'd in regular doom then, Boss Man?

Pure and simple oversight at the time

Thank God we put Shape Of Despair in regular doom. Okay, they play funeral doom but such a light version of it that it isn't extreme at all.

That bait looks so tasty.

no bait, pure and simple truth about Shape Of Despair.

I've never really quite understood the "extreme" definitions of the forum categories tbh. Funeral doom comes under extreme, yet funeral doom can be some of the fluffiest sounding music around, or some of the most crushing and unpalatable. Thrash to me is also so basic and conventional that I have trouble thinking of it as extreme either, these days anyway. The awards to me usually shook things up when it comes to "extreme" stuff though. I think it's best to take bands on their merits as only a few make it.

It can definitely be a very relative term. But I'll keep your input in mind though, as Rod kind of said as well, it could be grounds for judging what is and isn't "extreme" next year on a much more case-by-case basis.

Fuck, I just realized that I might end up eating my words about Ambient/Drone having no easy winner because there aren't any big names in it... totally forgot about Midnight Odyssey. God fucking damnit. I hate you all. Everything sucks.

Haha, don't worry, Che, I'm not voting for Midnight Odyssey. I've been getting into drone thanks to your reviews so I'm leaning towards Aderlating for now. No promises until I give them all another spin, though.

What makes me a little happy is that I pushed adding Vola (barely a few weeks before LeKiwi) and Extinction Level Event, now seeing them nominated. It's almost like I made a difference, you know?
I wish more people got into Hadean, because their debut is insane and deserves some Clandestine/Avantgarde/Whatever love. For what it's worth, they recently opened for Ne Obliviscaris in a last-minute gig (announced with 1-2 days notice, replacing shows cancelled because of tourmates Cradle Of Filth's visa problems) in Providence.

There is always those people complaining about wrong categories...

Don't forget the staff has to find exactly 10 good albums for each category, and each of the 10 nominees can not be nominated on each other of the categories.
Now pick the albums you listened and try arranging them in that way on an accurate manner for all the categories =)

Sometimes it works out for the best, sometimes it doesn't, though. Depends on what you like. I would love to have seen Tribby in the heavy metal cat, as it would have given it some interesting variety, and then something else could have taken the death spot (if my experience of the inner workings of the awards still hold up there would be more than enough other stuff to replace it). I mean at the end of the day if something's not where it should be then it shouldn't be there regardless of other considerations

While we're on the subject, I just spotted the Dragged Into Sunlight / GTT collab in extreme doom. Totally a death metal oriented album to me, if I recall it correctly Black metal secondarily, doom... maybe third.

Aye, that DIS/GTT collab is all about vicious pounding death metal. It's like putting Hatred for Mankind in doom

MS awards is always special when classifying albums anyway.... and to whine a bit I'll say there are some very good albums left out that could easily fit in some categories were mediocrity prevails.

I dont see DIS/GTT to be a "totally" death metal album. Definitely not an obvious choice at all if you ask me with all the different elements of death, black, sludge, doom, noise going on.
Unfortunately we dont have a "pitch black crazy shit" category othewrwise it would be dumped there but in the end I'm sattisfied with the consensus.
As for Hatred For Mankind, that would be blackened sludge for me.

Albums left out? Shit, what's new.

All that is true.
But the overall sound, the element that prevails on the collab, is death metal. As such, putting it in the DM category seems natural.
Seems quite obvious that when an album has different styles mixed up, just use the most represented one.

I don't see arguing here. Distilling drama where no drama existed in the first place. Nice self fulfilling prophecy.

I agree about the DIS / GTT not being totally one thing. I had a quick skim and it's a mix, but death I would say comes out slightly above the rest.

Not trying to distill any drama.

argue doesn't have to have a negative connotation, simply statements were being made back and forth discussing what should be where.

When it's done well... a good genre discussion makes me imagine us all wearing fine ass suits and hats and going all fancy while talking just loud enough for us to hear and no more.

I'm not at all sensitive to it. i care little in general and anytime i don't know what the fuck to call something i let someone else tag it.

i just find it all amusing.

to paraphrase a Jewish former co-workers introduced me to the phrase "Two Jews, three opinions."

when it comes to genre tagging in the metal community, it's a lot of "Two Metalheads, three opinions."

My cat eats out of a metal bowl. Where is the Cat Metal Award? The staff have no idea how to run a metal site! They spend all that time discussing who they are going to piss off...Ok, about 10 seconds writing down the name Bad English, the rest not talking about Cat Metal. I want my Meowcore now! My Extreme Black Cat, where is that?

LOL
meowcore sounds terrible, cats doing breakdowns, clean meowing and screamo meowing.
