Do bands usually start touring with the new album before it releases? Seems counter-intuitive when you want to crowd to be invested by knowing songs intimately or, at the very least, at the surface level?

Eh, only 3 dates are before/during the date they will officially release it. I'm sure quite some people will be able to listen to it. Not only due to leaks but I also bet a couple of websites will stream it. way before.
Also, let's not forget the fans that always buy no matter what.

Yeah, my condolences go out to the people attending those 3 gigs Personally, I like to get acquainted with an album before I hear it live because usually the live mix is...inferior, to put it lightly.

That depends highly on the band, the venue and who's behind the soundtable though. I've seen plenty of bands I'd consider "live-bands-only". I personally don't think I gain anything from knowing the songs first hand. If I like it I'll remember it. Plus, I hate when people too acquainted sing alone.

It does indeed depend on the band. For example I heard some unreleased Cattle Decapitation songs live and couldn't make out a damn thing. That's why I prefer hearing songs before
