I didn't know whether or not to include black/thrash or old school black heavy metal (like Venom and Mercyful Fate), so for the most part I left them out. Feel free to include those types or make a shorter/longer list of your favorite black metal albums. This killed so much time at work 1. Anaal Nathrakh - Eschaton This album is just pure chaos. The riffs and vocals, especially the ones done by Atilla, are insane. It's just so diverse and brutal that I can't help but make this number one. 2. Destroyer 666 - Phoenix Rising This is another perfect album, highlighted by awesome melodies and song structures filled with massive hooks and epic riffing. I'm truly sad when the album is over! 3. Ulver - Bergtatt Garm is one of my favorite vocalists in general - his harsh voice is equally as good as his clean singing. That, plus the added pianos and the whole cold vibe spewed from this album makes it one of my all time favs. 4. Funeral Mist - Salvation Arioch has such a powerful voice. The lyrics are also fun to read, and lets not forget about the choirs!! 5. Drudkh - Autumn Aurora This is probably the most relaxing album I have. Granted, the first half is way better than the second, but it's almost impossible to top the first couple songs. Too bad I only have a burned copy 6. Emperor - Equilibrium I haven't listened to Emperor much lately, but I think it's safe to say that this is their most diverse album that they ever made. Ihsahn showed here that he can do more than just growl, and the instruments still give off a sense of rushed instensity while still being catchy. 7. Dimmu Borgir - Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia 8. Mayhem - Ordo Ad Chao It's strange how a band as old as Mayhem didn't release their true masterpiece until last year. The guitar tone is dark as hell, and Atilla sounds like satan. 9. Anaal Nathrakh - The Codex Necro 10. Marduk - Rom 5:12 Arioch (Funeral Mist) single-handedly made Marduk a legitimate black metal band. I really don't care for their older albums (Opus Nocturne is kinda cool), but turning Marduk from "Norsecore" to religious black metal couldn't have been a better plan. 11. Darkspace - I Yeah, the production sucks, but I couldn't imagine this album any other way. The atmosphere is unreal, and it makes the listener feel like they're in space. 12. Dimmu Borgir - Stormblast 13. Darkthrone - Sardonic Wrath I prefer this over any other Darkthrone album because it's catchy and unpredictable. The last song is doom as fuck! 14. Deathspell Omega - Kenose 15. Immortal - Damned in Black I'm not a big fan of Immortal, but Damned in Black almost feels like a thrash album to me. 16. Watain - Sworn to the Dark I didn't like this CD at first, but it quickly grew on me. I can never get the title track out of my head! 17. Bathory - Blood Fire Death Sadly, I overplayed this to the max. But, at one time this was one of my favorite albums in general. The riffing is crazy good, and it's basically thrash! 18. Corpus Christii - Rising This is definitely Nocturnus Horrendus' best album. Even though it's really melodic, it still maintains a dark vibe. 19. Arcturus - Aspera Hiems Symfonia Garm is so cool... 20. Deathspell Omega - Manifestations 2002 I don't think Manifestations 2000-2001 counts because it's a compilation of older material from splits and shit, but Manifestations 2002 is all previously unreleased material, so I figured that it counts. Forget about the philosophical lyrics and the sometimes pretentious moments that Deathspell Omega has in their music nowadays - this is just pure orthodox black metal.

1. Watain - Casus Luciferi *Epic orthodox black metal, it doesn't get any better for me! 2. Armaggedda - Ond Spiritism *Incredible raw Bm album, probably the bands best effort yet so simply sounding. 3. Kataxu - Hunger of Elements *Mesmerizing symphonic effects and drawn out songs, not ordinary for nsbm, but works damn well. 4. Abigor - Supreme Immortal Art *Very melodic, some complain about the production, but I think it adds to the atmosphere. 5. Nokturnal Mortum - Nechrist *Has some of my favorie songs ever, also good use of folk elements 6. Emperor - IX *My favorite emperor album, and the best all around IMO. Not too avante-garde, not too raw. 7. Dissection - Storm of the Lights Bane *Epic Melodic Black/Death at its best, a timeless album for me. 8. '' - The Somberlain *I just love Dissection, what can I say? 9. Behexen - By the Blessing of Satan *Probably one of the sickest sounding raw bm albums imo with intenssseee atmosphere. 10. Old Man's Child - Vermin *My favorite melodic/symph album, OMC's best IMO. 11. Aeternus - And So the Night Became *Killer atmosphere, use of acoustic elements, and epicness. 12. Krohm - The Haunting Presence *My favorite DSBM release by far, it sounds beautiful almost. 13. Gehenna - Seen Through Veils of Darkness *Symph BM with gothic touches, and the one that hit me the most. 14. Ondskapt - Dodens Evangelium *Actually I lied, this rivals Watain's album for orthodox perfection. 15. Mayhem - Ordo Ad Chao *Genius if you ask me. 16. Bethlehem - Sardonischer Untergang im Zeichen irreligiöser Darbietung *Probably one of the most depressing albums I've ever heard, great. 17. Walknut - Graveforests and their shadows *subtle symph elements with heavy atmosphere and drawn out songs. Great stuff. 18. M8l8th - By the Wing of Black *Raw NSBM, one great album if you ask me. Definitely better than a lot that I've heard. 19. Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse *Just very memorable.

23.08.2008 - 09:35 Written by Marcel Hubregtse on 18.08.2008 at 05:15 To keep up the conversation, I listened to Venom's Black Metal yesterday, and it really made me laugh, that this was considered early black metal because there is just nothing of Black Metal (genre) in that album except for the lyrics maybe. The music though sounded like NWOBHM with grunting (if this is the right word) vocals, and the music (and those leads!) sometimes reminded me of Led Zeppelin. So Marcel, what are you saying? Bands like Venom shouldn't be called Black Metal, but just First Wave of Black Metal, right?

OK. With respect to pyroleprechaun's request, I'm not a big fan of black metal, but here is what I have come up with right now. Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane - great melodious black metal album; a lot of catchy songs Drudkh - The Swan Road - fell in love with it from instantly, although I didn't like the production in the beginning. A very interesting black metal album with great atmospheres. Drudkh - Blood in Our Wells - another good one from Drudkh. Immortal - Sons of Northern Darkness - when I first listened to this one, I said, "It sounds almost like a good thrash album," and it's indeed really great and full of good riffs. Immortal - At The Heart of Winter - I listened to this one long time ago, but I just remember it's great. Right now I am going thru some songs to recollect what it sounds like... and I can hear a lot of great thrash-influenced riffs. Crap, I need to listen to this one again. I'll edit it later, with Anorexia Nervosa and Dimmu Borgir coming I guess.

This is my "no-brainer" list: albums that I'll invariably always love. It's not exactly a unique or particularly underground list but I don't think I have the capability to fall in love with a black metal album anymore (the Mayhem one withstanding) so this lot will always stand as albums I genuinely enjoy. Deathspell Omega - Kenose Still the best EP ever made. 3 perfect songs of modern black metal. Velvet Cacoon - Genevieve/Northsuite I love these guys because their music is infused with the mystery of the band themselves. Pure visual imagery. Blut aus Nord - The Work Which Transforms God Just the most intense, apocalyptic modern black/post black metal album ever. An album to represent modern day extreme music. Ruins of Beverast - Unlock The Shrine Really long, really atmospheric "gloom" metal. Has 'The Clockwork's Groaning Circle," one of the best songs ever made. Enslaved - Isa Probably the best album of this decade bar none. Also the most subtle album ever made. It literally takes months to decipher the brilliance of this album's psychedlic Pink Floydian genius. Sigh - Ghastly Funeral Theatre/Imaginary Sonicscape The GFT E.P. sums up Sigh perfectly in 6 songs. Black metal, piano, electro, noise, genius, genius, genius. Imaginary Sonicscape is just an incredible example of avant garde heavy metal. The song 'Bring Back The Dead' is just <3 Alcest - Le Secret Pure beauty represented as music. I could die to these two songs. I actually prefer 'Elevation' to 'Le Secret' mainly for its build up to the solo. The Meads of Asphodel - Damascus Steel/In The Name of God... EP My fave metal band period. Purely because they epitomise what I love about music: Experimentation. Just the most unique band I know, I guess it's the closest I've ever come to actually relating to music. Beherit - Drawing Down The Moon/Electric Doom Synthesis People often talk about "atmosphere." Most of the time it's just a dude screaching to some badly produced guitar riffs but these two albums actually manage to pull off atmospheric, dark music better than any other band. Ulver - Bergtatt - Et Eeventyr i 5 Capitler Fucking epic. The first song is godly, especially the build up to the end when it just explodes into pure emotion. Transcending Bizarre? - The Four Scissors The album that Arcturus wanted to make but never could. Probably the only example of neo-classicism in a black metal album I actualy like, just because it's so wacky and brilliant. Drudkh - Forgotten Legends/Autumn Aurora Never could decide what album I prefered. Not entirely sure what I love about them either but they just seemed to convey incredible feeling and atmosphere in their nature inspired music. Nagelfar - Hunengrab Im Herbst One of the albums I remember listening to all those years ago one evening and just feeling incredible content doing so. Since then it's remained a favourite. Immortal - At The Heart Of Winter The reason I love this is because it's one of only two albums (for the other see Darkthrone) that actually resembles the "black metal" aesthetic I initially believe it all to be like. You know, winter, cold, bleak. That and because the album is pretty damned epic. Lurker of Chalice - Lurker of Chalice Another album of perfect atmosphere. Possible the most expertly executed example of black metal and ambient I know. The croaks of Wrest, the sounds of wind and birds in a forest. It all sounds terribly overdone but it really isn't. Genius. Wyrd - Huldrafolk One of the most emotive albums I've ever heard. The acoustic guitars and the pipes combine with the raw production to make an album of melancholic delight. Darkthrone - Transylvanian Hunger My first ever black metal album and still one best example of the old-school, second wave sound. I listened to this album so many times to try and understand what black metal was all about so it's kind of imprinted on me a bit. Nachtmystium - Instinct: Decay The idea of psychedlic black metal album didn't seem a very plausible one until I head this. I don't know how it was done but they somehow managed to avoid an ordinary, under-produced antique and instead make an album that was very unique. Negura Bungett - 'N Crugu Bradului I don't even remember why I liked this so much but I know I do. I'm listening to it now for the first time in a few years and it's all coming back to me... Mayhem- Ordo Ad Chao This, for me, is the evolution (or rather revolution) of the "true" black metal sound. As far as I'm concerned this album was pretty much the first of its kind. Murky, dense, disgusting, it has everything that black metal should epitomise but never has. It's almost like everything that came before this was just dark-blue metal.

Nice list. I'm never able to put one of those together, there's just too much to choose from! But some of your favourite albums are mine too. By the way, it's great to see that someone else appreciates The Ruins Of Beverast & Nagelfar as much as I do. (although I do prefer Nagelfar's Srontgorrth over Hunengrab... Srontgorrth just has too many memorable moments. The song "Willkommen Zu Haus" is sheer genius.)

Account deleted Written by Lucas on 19.09.2008 at 01:52 Yeah, Alexander von Meilenwald just seems to make great music. 'Strontgorrth' is incredible too, just prefered the slightly more melodic aspects of Hunengrab and also because I heard it way before getting round to Strontgorrth. It's kind of sad looking at this list. It makes me wonder if I've really enjoyed a black metal album in the past couple of years.

Oh shiiiit, here comes Dr.Untr00 to take a big dump on this thread, luckily I'll spare all your nerves and only post a top 10. 1. Belphegor - Goatreich Fleshcult The first black metal album I ever bought, I used to think it was so amazingly brutal and all that stuff (give me a break, I was moving straight from Blind Guardian and GnR to this). So I guess its just the familiarity that really makes me happy when I listen to this. 2. Marduk - Rom 5:12 This album is sweet, I enjoy it because the bass is actually audible which is weird for BM, but I still think it fits nicely. The Leveling Dust has to have possibly one of the sweetest intros ever. 3. Keep Of Kalessin - Armada Yeah yeah I know, pristine production values, yadda yadda yadda. I still dont give a shit, this album grew on me fast, theres not one song on it that I find boring. (other than the opening instrumental). 4. Mayhem - Chimera I'm probably one of 2 people on the planet who prefers Maniac over Attila, and this is probably there most commercially accessible album (well, as commercially accessible as there going to get) but once again, I dont give 2 shits. Theres quit a few creepy riffs in there that mix so well with Maniacs vocals. 5. Venom - Welcome To Hell Still reigning as one of my favorite bands, this is what got me into them, so sloppy and raw its hard not to rock out to these repetitive-yet catchy riffs. Not to mention the riffs are incredibly heavy without using top notch production values. 6. Enslaved - Below The Lights I like this one because it caught me off guard how bizarre some bits were, an album thats full of surprises to say the least, luckily most of them good surprises. 7. Dark Fortress - Eidolon Another one that grew on me really fast, they were kind enough to keep the keyboards toned down for a lot of it which was good, because having it in the background really helped boost the sound. Some parts are pretty boring but luckily its enjoyable for the most part. 8. Destroyer 666 - Cold Steel...For An Iron Age A fairly new one, but even after like 4 listens I'm already loving it, it will probably move up on this list after more listens, but for now it sits here. 9.I - Between Two Worlds I left this at the last slot because Im not sure how many people would actually consider this a black metal album, I really like it because its like black metal meets Motorhead. Question: does anyone think this album carries enough BM sound to it to qualify for this thread? If no, I cut it out. Hm, it seems theres no other albums that impress me THAT much to put them in a top 10, theres a lot more I enjoy, but none of them really stand above one another.

I pretty much heard the entire album on youtube, it sounds very good and probably on the par with Cold Steel for the most part, but the title track on Cold Steel is just so awesome, probably my favorite song by them. My only problem being I prefer KK Warsluts vocals far better than Berserkers, and Berserker does far too much vocalizing (sweet I check that word on dictionary.com and it actually is a word! Probably wrong context though) on that album.

1. Bathory - Under the Sign of the Black Mark A landmark album, combining the raw side with an epic feel - the latter of which would be explored further on later releases. Unquestionably influential on the 'second wave', varied, and eerie riffs such as the infernally catchy 'Enter the Eternal Fire'. 2. Hellhammer - Apocalyptic Raids (EP) Maybe not really considered Black Metal by some people, and barely even considered 'music' by many more (even Marcel hates this band!) However, perversely they seem to be more popular now than ever. 3. Mercyful Fate - Melissa The only one in this list with melodic vocals - and what great vocals they are! Nobody sounds quite like King Diamond, who was arguably at his possessed best on this album, and the riffs to songs such as 'Curse of the Pharaohs' are excellent. 4. Gehenna - First Spell (EP) Only 5 tracks, but each one is spellbinding melodic Norwegian Black Metal - this floored me when it first came out. One of the best uses of keyboard in Black Metal - this is a very keyboard-driven release, but it shows that it can be used effectively. Almost always midtempo, very melodic yet dark, it manages to be accessible without sounding commercial or contrived. 5. Mystifier - Goetia Quite literally a 'Black' Metal band, these Brazilian guys released an album steeped in the occult, with great use of rhythmic vocal patterns and surprisingly catchy songs. 6. Rotting Christ - Thy Mighty Contract Most of this band's output is worthwhile, but I decided to go for this album for the list. As with Mystifier, here we have a non-Scandinavian band forging their own style of Black Metal, with an individual approach to the melody and riffing that they still use to this day. 7. Burzum - Hvis Lysett Tar Oss Only 4 tracks, but it's a full-length album - and the opening song in particular, 'Det Som Engang Var' (also the name of the previous album, just to confuse everyone!) is an unforgettable epic masterpiece. Varg's tortured howls accompany harsh yet dreamlike music which doesn't change much but builds a sense of menace. 8. Von - Satanic Blood Actually a demo, but it was released on CD with the Blood Angel demo and some live tracks. Not many American bands were revered for Black Metal in the early 1990's but Von were an inspiration to the Norwegian scene at the time, with their starkly raw sound and ritualistic, hypnotic style. 9. Darkthrone - Under a Funeral Moon This was the first Darkthrone album I bought, in 1993 I think, and at the time they weren't too well known - this was before Fenriz talked about South Park and Seinfeld in interviews - ! - and it just seemed totally obscure and reminiscent of Bathory. 10. Nortt - Gudsforladt Something a bit more recent now.. I love Doom and slow, sinister sounding stuff, and one-man band Nortt combines that element with a Black Metal aesthetic. This is incredibly haunting and bleak. I originally downloaded this, but was lucky enough to get the official version on CD (limited to 1000 I think).

My top 10 : 1. Emperor - Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk No words needed. 2. Dissection - Storm Of The Light's Bane One of my first, and one of the best Black Metal albums. 3. Immortal - Battles In The North Cold, snow, grimness and furious riffs. That says it all. 4. Emperor - In The Nightside Eclipse I remember my reaction when i first listened to it. "wow". There's a dark feeling in this masterpiece. 5. Ulver - Bergtatt Epic. 6. Dimmu Borgir - EDT/PEM Satan himself must have been the producer 7. Marduk - Opus Nocturne Evil, dark...Marduk. 8. Dark Fortress - Profane Genocidal Creations Very good production, some of the best BM riffs ever, great atmosphere. And the female vocals in some parts are awesome. 9. Shining - V: Halmstad With the right proportion of BM and suicide, you get this. 10. Vesania - Firefrost Arcanum Orion's fury unleashed.

1. Darkthrone - Hate Them *"Rust", nothing more to say... 2. Abruptum - Obscuritatem Advoco Amplectere Me *maybe not really metal at all, but in my eyes great to listen to alone in a dark room 3. Burzum - Filosofem *raw, cold, atmospheric, "Jesus Tod" is one of the best black metal songs ever written... 4. Ulver - Nattens Madrigal *fast, raw and great lyrics... masterpiece 5. Nargaroth - Herbstleyd *love the vocals and the long intros on that album, great overall-atmosphere 6. Satyricon - Rebel Extravaganza *as to say in Fenriz' words "a raw and harsh album, not for whimps" 7. Veles - Night on the bare mountain *creates an phantastic atmosphere through its folk parts and the production, highly recommended! 8. Marduk - Those of the unlight *my first album from Marduk, and still their best one in my eyes 9. Beherit - The oath of black blood *the rawest shit I've ever heard in my live, got chills down my spine when listening to "Beast of Damnation" for the first time... 10. Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas *many consider it as overrated, nearly sell-out kvlt, but still a great album and a phantastic title song!
