Alright, so for the past few months I've hit a bit of a wall with bands. I just feel satisfied with what I have, and while it feels pretty good to not have the urge to search and delve further into the realms of Metal music because it means I'm sated already, it is also freaking me out a little. I'm happy with what I've heard so far, so I've lost the desire to search any more. Have any of you have experienced stuff like this before?

I get that feeling sometimes. Then I just end up finding a new great band or style of metal. I want to expand outside of the metal sound (and any sort of rock) but I just can't. Being a metalhead is both a gift.... and a CURSE!

Sometimes I wonder why I 'm still searching for new sounds and bands...
I've got enough music to fill my days with.
I once had a period thet I bought 10 albums at the same time, but if you do that 3 times in a row, when are you going to listen them?
When I was younger and didn't have that much LP's, I knew all the songs, all the lyrics and everything around a certain band.
Now I forget songs, lyrics and some albums can't stay in my head because I don't listen them enough although I like 'em.

Yeah ive gotten that problem. I feel like a lot of the time when newer Death Metal comes out i go, wait, ive already heard this. Kinda lose motivation to go out and look for something new in fear that itll sound like something i already listen to. For example, From Your Grave by The Absence was a pretty good album, but the whole time listening to it, i kept thinking, this sounds like if In Flames and At The Gates had a baby, this is what it would sound like. Every once and a while though like Obscura's new album blew me away. That gave me some faith haha.

Well, the problem i get is that sometimes i don't know wht i want to listen to, so i end up listening to nothing... but i alwys like exploring new stuff, maybe because of what i said, 'cause sometimes i just want to listen ot new stuff, and see if i can bump into something interesting. several times that's come out pretty well an i've found some really good bands. myspace is a great tool for this

I get that way a little with some of the metal genres, mainly black metal. I'll be really into for a period and then ill move away from it cause I lose satisfaction with the bands, heh. Well thats just my experience.

Yeah I definitely know what you mean. Though not exactly the same. I always have the drive to try and find new music, but sometimes I'll go months without finding anything I'll listen to more than 2 or 3 times, while at the same time I listen to my old favorites until I play those out, then it becomes sort of a rut.

Nah I never get enough....I like to grow in my musical taste so I wont necessarily like a band now which i loved a year ago (obviously there are exceptions). But generally I search for music ever day of my life..

That's happened to me quite a few times, but that urge to find new stuff always comes back. At a time when you don't expect expansion in a genre, you find it. When I was still listening to Darkthrone and Burzum and thought THIS is what black metal is, I eventually doesn't Secrets of the Moon and that led me down another rabbit hole. I don't even know where I first heard about Deathspell Omega any more!

Some people think the more bands you know, the more cool you are or something like that. However, some of those people don't take the time to be a fan and get into the band.

I think I'm pretty content right now. I could do without finding out about another black metal band that's just doing the same thing. However, if someone could recommend another band like A Forest Of Stars, I'd be obliged

I've felt the same in the past!!! when you have that problem you can stop searching or listening new stuff but you should listen only to what you have till then. you do that until you get bored with it after some time and then it is time to search again for new music!!!

Haven't really had that feeling with metal yet, but I bet I will one day. The closest thing I've experienced was when I couldn't decide what to pop in the player, because I thought I had heard it all a bit too much. That just encouraged me to find something new.

I've tried in the world of psy-trance/goa. At the time there were being released so many albums that I couldn't keep up and ended up deciding that I would just stick to the 10-15 artist I liked best

I haven't had that feeling. Almost every day I find some new music, especially I look a lot for old and new Thrash bands.

A question to those I have already heard enough: how long have you been seriously into metal?

The natural thing if you hear something over and over and over again should be that the "exstatic" feeling for it minimizes. I think that is why I have been into that experience. Then, i I don't think about it, the feeling for music comes back. So use thy reptile-brain.

Actually I never really feel completely satisfied with what I got, therefore I always search for new music in a variety of genres. Usually when I find a great band in a certain genre, I try to dig deeper into that specific genre. But when I've found some cool bands, I usually listen them out for several days. Then I continue to find more bands, and repeat until eternity.

I mean kinda for example

I listened to many bands in 2005 then seteled with one bands which is "dope" I stopped searching for new bands until late 2007 where I discovered "bullet for my valentine" "As I lay dying" & "All That Remains" after than this month exactly I got more band how many more like more than 12 bands only 1 is metalcore "killswitch engage" the rest are death metal gothic symphonic thrash grind doom progressive etc.

check my collection to understand what I mean.

I personally think that music taste kinda sucks. Not that those bands suck, I don't think that, but I'm still searching for that bit of perfection, for that enthralling mixture of brutality, melody, sorrow, darkness and energy.

I'm probably not making a lot of sense, I know.

I don't have a lot of songs on my best playlist, like a 320, but that's not much at all, since half of it are Korn and Disturbed. What's really weird about me is that songs which by definition and my past tastes I SHOULD like, I end up feeling like something's really missing out there. I'm probably too picky now, or I probably don't really know what I want anyway.

So yeah, I sometimes feel like I've heard enough, but a lot more often I feel like there are still a lot of great bands I haven't discovered yet, which would be exactly what I'm looking for, and that bugs me a lot. And I'm not really happy with digging for new bands and songs, because, while I can find something I like here and there, I end up being disappointed.

My advice is to just wait a few months. There are thousands of metal releases every year, and you should find something you like after that time.

Well...I hope I will. The closest think I've caught to what I desire is Scar Symmetry. Ever since Korn and Disturbed, there hasn't been a band that I fell in love with so soon, and so fast. I originally heard their song Noumenon and Phenomenon from their latest release, which is mostly bad; but when I've heard some of their older stuff (singles like The Illusionist and Morphogenesis), that was it.

I know this feeling exactly. I used to be like an underground encyclopedia but now I tend tro buy what I know I already like. I have expanded into looking for new folk bands and trance music but Metal goes through copy cat stages and I just dont care about most new bands because they are un original but I do sometimes hear something new and love it like Volbeat and Obscura.

I really understand what you mean. I still like metal very much but I usually only listen to the albums I still have (I sold many albums throughout the years because I didn't listen to them in a long time and I knew I was over with this kind of stuff), which means I listen almost exclusively to my 'favorites' collection, only around a hundred albums. And all of them are Black and Thrash albums. I listened to pretty much every metal genre (except Doom because I never had the slightest trace of interest in this genre- I'm first and foremost a fan of speed + I hate depressive music) throughout the 25 last years or so and got bored of all of them, except for Black and Thrash.

There was a time when I checked as many new and different stuff as I could but I'm way past this point now. I only focus on what I like the most. Also, I utterly dislike how much of the metal stuff sounds today, so I almost never like new stuff. I'm not even sure if I bought an album since the beginning of the year. I have the feeling I will always enjoy the albums I like at the moment (because I really like them deeply) but if it follows-on like that I believe I will end up not even bothering to check new stuff.

Also, metal is only a matter of music to me. I don't give a fuck at the scene and live aspect. Last time I went to a big gig, it was during Maiden's "No Prayer On The Road" tour, if it can give you an idea. I couldn't care less for the live aspect.
I don't dress and live like a metalhead, anyway, and all my friends are mot metalheads. You will never ever guess that I'm a guy who's been listening to metal for over 25 years if you meet me in person and I don't tell you.

Do you like any non-metal genres? Even just one or two bands? If so I'd branch out with those and give metal a temporary breather or put it on the backburner if I were you.

Either that or see if you're missing any recent releases from bands you already have in your music collection. I need to do this myself, actually... If it's a band you know and like already then you know you'll at least be able to sit through the album comfortably, barring major Cryptopsy-esque lolbombs.

I'm in a similar rut myself. Metal-wise I'll unashamedly admit I found a lot of musical gems via word of mouth (well, "word of text" on the net, heh) from people who like similar things to me musically, and it's got to that inevitable point where I know pretty much all of the standard recommendations on my "home turf", even the more obscure stuff. If I was a lame kvlt kiddie whose musical-database-penis grew at being able to namedrop a range of bands I'd be set, but it just feels like options for finding gems are running out... and looking for "bands that sound like <band I already like>" recommendations just don't fit the bill for me anymore.

Personally, I'm opting for branching out whilst re-listening to a lot more classical music than I have been doing in the last 3 or 4 years. I've had a good run of almost-exclusivity with metal subgenres (well, 90% of my musical repertoire levels) and I think I've hit a similar wall. I'd recommend that route.

I have a 39 hour play list of metal so it never gets boring...it took an ass load of time to put together...if there's one band I've had enough of period it would be Dream Theater...

I've had enough of progressive metal I think...when I first joined Metalstorm, I was a prog nerd along with a bunch of other people...I know Jed is still exploring so many new bands and I should really ask him what he's been finding these days...Jed, where are you? hah...

What I do is I jump from genre to genre a lot. I think that's why it never gets boring to me. But I also have times when I just need to find something new. Ivor is helping too, always telling me about new interesting bands and albums tks!

Although I stick to a lot of prog and death/gothenburg metal, I vary a lot and that's what keeps it fresh for me. And when nothing works I'll just listen to Marillion lol kidding, but I'll just turn to some rock band and try something different and old, usually.

I felt like that 4-5 years ago. I only listened to Iron Maiden, Metallica, Children of Bodom and Norther. I actually didn't think there existed more good metal music. For real. I don't know what happened, what made me search for more. I probably joined MS or something.

But yes, I know what you mean. I too feel satisfied with what I have now and then, but there always comes a point when I need something new.
