When I go into a music store I usally look at album art when searching for a new metal band, Sometimes they suck and sometimes they rule. What does anyone else do to search for new bands?

Yes...i music stores or bazaars i sometimes select new bands according to cd cover...sometimes i am disappointed, but thats life but i usually try new things "on-line", thanks to MySpace (and various local derivatives) or YouTube it is quite easy and "harmless" nowayads

In the past, I've had some luck if I find a CD by a band I don't know, but recognize a reputable label, or if the cover makes it seem like the band is related to extreme metal, but I've also bought some horrible stuff using the same strategy. Now, I don't usually buy an album unless I'm familiar with the name or if I can preview it at the store first.

Via this site of course. I look at ratings (as in who voted) or stalk other people to see what's their favourites and read the staff reviews. Then either use myspace or look for download links to see if it is really my thing

Well I bought a few Cds because I liked the cover or the band's name but you might as well buy totally at random. What really helps is to dig trough reviews of bands you like to find comparisons with other band's you didn't know about yet. For example I fell in love with "Running Wild" from [band]Airbourne/band] and as everyone claimed they were basically ripping of Rose Tattoo, I gave them a shot. Not a bad experience indeed. Same applies for genres, if you are into In Flames, go look for other melodeath. And I'm sure there are still a few "classic" bands out there that you didn't yet have the opportunity to listen to (I still stumble upon those very often). That shit is probably great, millions of flies can't be all wrong.

That is why I am on this site, to find new music and learn more about the bands I have an interest in. I go to posts for various styles and see what bands are suggested and check them out. If I like what I hear, I put them in my wishlist (then I don't forget). Or a band you already like, look at the bottom of their profile and see what other bands fans of the same band like. So many options just on MS to find some good new shit!

Just a note when looking at ratings, the average score is not always a good indicator of people's opinions. For example; If half the people who review an album think it's horrible and the other half think it's brilliant, the average would be somewhere in the middle. A 5 or 6 rating does not do justice to the half that gave it a 1 or 2 or the half that gave it a 9 or 10. It's good to look at the individual ratings, instead of just the average.

Oh yeah, metalstorm is the best reference to finding new music! I'll look for decent scored albums or similar bands in the band connection and then listen to them on grooveshark or lala.com (great sites) long ago I used to use pandora radio too also, the similar artist feature on last fm has come in useful a few times

I've found quite a few bands thanks to Metalstorm, the yearly awards is a great way to discover new bands. The other sites I use are Last.fm and Metal-Archives, I usually use it to find some more of the obscure bands out there.

Usually the first thing I do is search here in MS. Use the search filter and look for bands that play a specific genre that I want to find, check the ratings and reviews, and always try their Myspace playlist. Most of the bands I know it was thanks to Metalstorm. For a deeper research and less known/under-rated bands I use Metal Archives. But its always good to check the store and try some bands just by looking at their cover arts. Usually its like a 10% chance of finding something that pleases me, but we never know... I found Evergrey by doing this, and nowadays they're one of my top progressive references.

This site is the single largest resource for me, at least in regards to metal... over time you become familiar with some users tastes and how they compare to your own. there are probably two dozen people here (a mixed bag of staff and forum regulars) who when they promote something, i take notice. i rarely gamble on random releases, although if i do, i think the label is a small factor. i'm apt to try something on the Neurot label. back in the very early 90s i swore by Earache. i used to buy by album art as well, or the band logo, but got quite a lot of mediocrity that way. with less disposable income now, i find i take less chances.

I listen to mainsteam radio and watch MTV ... ... Metalstorm is definitely my first source when it comes to metal, with Metal Archives if an additional investigation seems useful. But nothing match the advices of Metalstorm mates to discover new bands. I won't name anybody in particular, but as I'm fond of Doom everyone will gess who I'm talking about

SYNKLETOS The debut album of Russian two-man melodic doom / death metal band SYNKLETOS, containing plenty of heavy guitar riffs, long-winded solos, atmospheric keys, guttural growls and deep clean vocals, generously blended with some beautiful new age interludes. The ideological basis of this piece is the concept of 'Enlightened Doom' inspired by the images of Daniil Andreev's metaphilosophical treatise 'Rose of the World'. Contemplation, Endless Road and Reincarnation - these are the basic drivers of the whole project. The album is aimed not only at old school doom metal fans, but as well at those who are simply in love with beautiful and soul-inspired melodies, which are abundant in this 42-minute release. The sound quality is guaranteed by the renowned Russian metal sound producer Igor 'KIV' Korolyov, who has worked with such titans of domestic metal-scene as Butterfly Temple, Nevid', Ashen Light, Stigmatic Chorus, Izmoroz', Kartikeya, Everlost, Mafia, Molecul, Put' Solntsa and many others. The album offers a wide range of musical tones - from light sadness to primordial aggression, from quiet serenity and contemplation to cries of despair. The band invites the listener on a journey into their own world of emotions, spiritual search and silent wisdom. -- http://www.myspace.com/synkletos https://www.facebook.com/pages/Synkletos/185149381592185?fref=ts http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Synkletos/3540326424 http://truenometalico.com/synkletos-spiritual-alchemy-critica/ http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=synkletos&oq=synkl&gs_l=youtube.1.0.35i39j0.8821.10522.0.11962.5.5.0.0.0.0.108.448.4j1.5.0...0.0...1ac.1.8ZAL-Y-TNS4 http://solitudestore.com/shop/en/product/synkletos-2011-spiritual-alchemy/

Easy, 1. Clicks "BANDS" at the top of the Metal Storm screen. 2. Filter out genres you're not interested in. 3. Search through bands, one by one. 4. Have a look at ratings, and then pick the highest rated album. 5. Pick one of the songs, usually the second song is a good start for most albums. 6. Type that song into youtube and listen to it. 7. If you like it, then it gives you an indication that you might like their other stuff. At the very least, you'll like that one song. 8. See if you can buy the CD from a store, physically, or buy it online, e.g., through itunes. 9. Keep going through the list. Yes, I have gone right through the list of bands on Metal Storm, under the genres I picked. It was thirty pages long. It takes a while, but you discover a lot of good stuff that most people don't know about. Check out my profile to see the amount of bands I've added. I couldn't believe the stuff out there.

I like the website Metal Injection. It has a list of most albums that came out every week. I usually go through the list and look for Genres, Artists, and Artwork that I like. I've found some good and really niche stuff, it doesn't shy away from lesser-known artists. https://metalinjection.net/
