I am during my exams period, and as always i cant concentrate without having music playing next to me, talking about the most of the subjects. And i have noticed that i can listen just some really specific kinds of metal than can keep me concentrated. Slow tempos, without big changes with characteristic monotony i could say. Such as Summoning, Drudkh and A Forest of Stars. So i would like to hear if im not the only here, and get ideas for alternative solutions!

I think slow stuff works best. I've never listened to that much doom as before some of my exams, used to calm me down and keep me focused. Traditional doom though, mostly Reverend Bizarre.

I remember back when I did my A-levels, about 2 years ago, I used to study whilst listening to a lot of thrash and black metal. I found it a hell of a lot easier to work this way. The music would pretty much become a wall of sound, and i'd become unaware of it even playing when fully concentrating. I don't like background noise that I cant control, It really distracts me, so music was pretty much the only way i could study.

I can't study while listening to any music at all, it distracts me and doesn't help to concentrate. I always end up singing the lyrics and paying much more attention to solos and riffs than to my books or notes.

I don't listen to anything new when I study, I prefer albums that I'm familiar with. It doesn't matter what the genre is but I prefer Doom and Atmospheric Black, bands like WitTR, Esoteric, Chaos Moon, The Angelic Process and many others help me study better

I can't really study with any metal in the background, I find it far too distracting. I do find that instrumental music of any genre does help me study, especially Classical and Ambient.

I honestly can't study with loud Metal on. I don't think it's made for studying. I usually put on something Dark Ambient, Dark Classical, NeoClassical, like Dargaard or Dark Sanctuary. The most Metal i've studied to is probably Therion. But then again, the key is volume. I think I can't concentrate on what i'm studying with the music up really loud. I am in the middle of finals too. Hell Week is kicking my ass.

Prog works for me, but unfortunately I can never play it then... either someone else is occupying the computer when I study and they have their own choice of music, or I study together with my sister and she "cannot concentrate when I play that uneven shit".

I have to play old favourites anything new and I keep trying to listen harder than trying to study, although the music has to go off when completing the physics degree assignments especially if I'm stuck... too easy to go for any sort of distraction at that point!

15.12.2011 - 01:49 Written by HeavyMetalBullet on 14.12.2011 at 23:37 Agreed. Old favourites work the best for me! I'm less likely to pay attention to the music if I know what's coming. It's like falling asleep to your favorite movie or TV show. So it's hard to suggest new music to study to because if it's "new and interesting" then it'll probably be captivating! However I will make one suggestion: Pensées Nocturnes's Ceci est de la musique. I find myself putting that on often when I want to read a book. It's avant based in classical music and black metal, among many others. Just try it I am like the original poster, though, I can't concentrate as well in silence. Maybe it's our generation and that we were raised in a world of increasing distractions. Or maybe it's just that we're all music nerds But I prefer to have music on ALL the time, studying or not!

I prefer to read/study while listening to bands that don't sing in English; that way I'm not distracted by the lyrics.

I can study listening to metal as long as it's melodic and not too loud. And like others were saying, it has to be old favourites so it's more like pleasant background noise with studying being my main focus. If I'm hearing an album for the first time or even one that I'm not too familiar with, it grabs way too much of my attention.
