I prefer 'Dimension Hatroess', but 'Nothingface' has a lot of variety.

I kinda like the music on Voïvod's old albums (until "Dimension Hatross") but I've never been able to enjoy the band because of their shitty vocalist. Put a decent vocalist on their old albums and it would be enjoyable.

I am a HUGE Voivod fan but this release gets waaaay too much props. It's not a bad album by any means I just think the production is too "light and fluffy" if that makes sense. I'll take Dimension Hatross pre- and Angel Rat post- but nothing compares to the mighty The Outer Limits...

The best Voivod Album IMO is "The outer Limits".

Since there is no official review I am giving newcomers a little info to go on. No song by song though.

Voivod's 3 album run reaches the finale with 1989's Nothingface. Pure classic! Some people think NF is to much fluff and polished. I agree to a point if they had stayed that way but a good bit of their albums in the mid to late 90's are far from fluffy. I have to speak the truth though and that is Nothingface is a classic. The songwriting and execution are near flawless. My fellow musicians would agree for the most part that if you keep doing the same thing over and over you get bored and become uninterested leading to uninspired bland songs. Guitarist Denis "Piggy" D'Amour reached the summit on Nothingface. The production doesn't sound like any other of their albums and thats what makes it work. The complex progressions Piggy plays would sound muddled if overly distorted. War and Pain and Rrroooaaarrr!!! are the only two similar in sound to me.

As a big fan of Vektor, I was very much looking forward to listening to Voivod. While the instrument parts are all very well written and played, I really don't feel that the vocals suit them. It's not that they're bad, it just doesn't sound like they should be paired together. I think I would have enjoyed this album even more as an instrumental release, or with a harsher, more death/black metal vocalist to compliment the chaotic atmosphere.

Dimension hatross is sooo much better.

Somewhat different genres, so maybe not totally comparable albums. I prefer these songs and vocals to DH's.

Dimension Hatross blows this out of the water. The Pink Floyd cover is the only really interesting song on here.

Since I am in the mood for some Voivod, I'll re-listen to this one once I'm done with their self-titled album I'm listening right now.

The PF cover is indeed awesome. I think the original wasn't as good a song and here Voivod brought some new life to it. I wouldn't say it's any better than the other great songs on this album though; "The Unknown Knows" and "Inner Combustion" for instance are some of the best Voivod songs and are hard to be matched by any band. I can't really say that there's a weak song on the album and I'm currently debating whether to raise the rating or not. Thus, it's one of the top Voivod albums for me.

I think the vocals fit the music just fine because it's obviously not a record meant to sound agreesive or thrash, unlike let's say Killing Technology. I prefer originality and personality when it comes to vocals; by contrast I find the second rate late Chuck Schuldiner type of vocals that Vektor has to be dreadfull. I also find Vektor to be technical for the sake of being technical which is not the case here; this is a very fun and well written record.
