Seriously, as much as I love living in the rural midwest, (seriously) there are never ANY concerts/festivals I can just go to, see, and pull a short red eye driving back. So many bands are touring right now, but with my budget it's completely illogical to see them >_<
Epica, Opeth, Mastodon, Meshuggah, Kamelot, Nightwish, Iced Earth (though wth the hell yeah tour, im guessing IE would play first, meaning that I could just leave after the good band and not have to sit through a few meh bands)

am I the only one with this issue?

Could that be discussed in the latest concert you attended? or any other gig related threads?

This is more about missing concerts than attending them.

generally speaking Phoenix gets more of the cool/big shows than Tucson does. It's about 130 mile/210km trip, each way, so i seldom see shows up there... the gas cost alone is more than tix, t-shirt, and a barley soda.

Living in Brighton, decent bands occasionally make their way here, but London is where it's at for gigs. It's only a 50 minute train trip to London from Brighton but trains aren't cheap here, plus the price of the tube tickets (also not at all cheap) usually ends up being more than the price of the ticket and the fact you have to leave before the end of the gig lest you miss the last train or coach home kinda sucks the incentive of travelling there for gigs for me.

The one and only thing I like about living in Oakville is that it's close to Toronto, which gets lots of good shows (and raves... and shopping places... and a good enough transit system to accomodate non-drivers like myself lol). It's pretty rare for a band to tour in Canada and not go to Toronto.

Ah, I know that feeling. I'm 20 and my parents still try to interfere with my plans to go to shows :/ I'm seeing Behemoth in that same week, so I don't know how many strings I can pull or how much I can fit into my schedule... But I always tell my parents I'm meeting up with a friend at the show, rather than let them know I'm going alone

For the OP: I'm almost completely sure Hellyeah will be the openers, and as much as I love Iced Earth, Volbeat is a much better live band.

I used to live in Las Palmas, which is 3 hours by plane from the closest metal concerts. Aside from a trip to mainland Spain with 2 concerts and a Dio tribute show in Las Palmas, it was the most concert-less 5 months of my life.

so yeah, while in Spain I could feel your pain

Spent last 4 years between Bordeaux and Granada, in both places there are a good number of underground/local band gigs but only about 2 or 3 "big" international acts a year.

So I have to travel quite a bit around (mostly Paris and Madrid, at least I have a place to stay) and yeah, it costs much more money, time & shit.... but the adventure is worth it! Being a devoted metalhead was never easy

Yep. I never get to see any good shows in Shreveport. The Dallas/Fort Worth/Arlington area occasionally kick ass, but it's too long of a drive and I don't really have the privilege or the wheels to make these journeys myself.

The last show played here was Shinedown and Godsmack. Ugh.

I live in central Kansas. Metal shows are almost non-existent here. Do I even need to explain why?

Ive lived in Kansas for a while, the drive to and from anywhere that isn't Topeka, KC, or to a lesser extent Lawrence is torture, be it 5 minutes or 4 hours...

It's like an hour and a half by bus (or 10 minutes by helicopter ) to the nearest metal venue. No international bands though.

Lemme rephrase the OP so it suits my situation: the closest concert to me is a 6+ hour train trip to the neighboring country. (not counting the shitty local bands, though)

I've noticed this too living in Northumberland. If you want to go see a well known metal band in London, you usually need to get a bus to Newcastle (or to a train station further down the path, but you need to change trains), a train from Newcastle and then the tube to find where the venue is. Throw in booking a hotel for the night and you can see why the prospect of a gig in London is impractical at best. I live an hour from Newcastle, yet, ironically, includes next to no bands of particular interest to me.

I took for granted living in the Atlanta area for so long. Now I'm close to Jacksonville, Florida, and hardly any good shows go there.

I live in the heart of Stockholm city. First of all, Sweden get a huge amount of metal concerts. Secondly, if a band plays in Sweden, it's most likely they first of all play in Stockholm. And third, I can like walk or at least take the subway for a maximum of 15 minutes to every venue here. I couldn't ask for more.

Here in Bucharest we don't get too many really good concerts, except in summer and autumn usually. I'm not complaining, it's not like I have to take a bus for a few hours just to get to a damn concert. I mostly walk or cycle home from venues.

I live twenty mintues away from downtown Austin, where every band that's not an arena filler but still has a significant fanbase within the metal world (every major death metal band and every major thrash band that's not the Metallica) comes. I saw Overkill and Meshuggah last May, and am seeing Accept and Kreator soon, all for twenty minutes of driving and $20 for tickets. To all you rural fools out there-

Even for bands like Priest and Maiden who are arena fillers, they go to San Antonio which is about an hour drive. Totally worth it.

Well, scene in Cardiff is pretty different. Bigger budget bands perform in fucking Wembley, while bands like "Soulfly, Meshuggah, Bonded By Blood, Kreator" performs in Cardiff Solus, rest apart from a local deathcore bands who performs daily on a local racquets .

I would jizz myself to hear a metal band play live regardless of style, and I'd sit through all the other bands just the same. (Hell, I went to a Disciple gig a few months back, even though they're a Christian band and play more of a metalcore/alt metal mix that I'm not into as much, for the sole reason that it was a $7 gig in my town and I could hang out with other people who were going. No regrets.) Not like I wouldn't do the same thing on my computer listening to different new bands. That's how I find really good music out of all the stuff that's meh. And why leave early from your rare chance to get to listen to metal live?

Many cases 1th gig is in Göteborg , I am happy Skåne has no so many gigs , since Malmö and Helsinkborg is pretty bigf cities

@ others - to me gigs is like 1h fly or 11-14 h in car 14h in buss 18h in train, so only fiev gigs is in Luleå, Umeå has more, Sundsval, Gävle to but go there is fucke dup
Umeå is easier to me .... well Stkh to, but it costs sek 1500 fly tickets both directions and + trevel to venue, drinks, hotel, (maybe warman can offer nice stay place to fellow AIK man )
So to me all os fucked up

same time Finland in NORTH in damn Oulu happen many finish and international giggs in teatria club what is famose.... well go there is fucked up, if I could simply cross a sea whit a both it would be close, but buss and cars Luleå-Happaranda/Torneo - then Torneo-Oulu ,,,, money and way

Luckily I live in a great area where I can see all kinds of shows. Lots of bands come through here. San Francisco, California is only 1 1/2 hour ride from here. I have absolutely no problem with riding my motorcycle 6 hours to see a show.

This upcoming week I have Krisiun and Arsis on the 17th that's 2 hours away. The following night I have Cannibal Corpse, Napalm Death, Immolation, and Early Graves that's 2 hours away on the 18th.The following night I have Dillinger Escape Plan, Faceless, and Royal Thunder right down the street from my house. Two nights later I have Tubronegro and Torche down the street. A couple nights after that is Murder by Death and Builders as Butchers. Pretty exciting week show wise. There's still all kinds of shows going on around me but that's all I can afford this month.

My closest is 1 hour away by walk or 15 mins by car. But the chances of my closest venue getting a good metal show at all is pretty slim. In the last 3 years only Marduk and Turisas have come to play. Otherwise I have to go all the way to Birmingham or Nottingham to go to shows which is a hour away by car.
