Sounds like kind of a pretentious title but whatevs. They haven't disappointed me thus far even though I wasn't the biggest fan of OtoS.

Everything about this band is pretentious as hell.

I wont be listening to this, anyway, though. Didnt like the first two records, no reason to believe I'll like this.

People keep calling AFoS pretentious (which they are), but at least these guys back the pretentious-ness with top quality music and that's the important thing for me.

In a way they're far less "pretentious" than 99% of black metal culture bands, who usually try to extol their "black metal" heritage with silly imagery, iconography and lyrics but fail to give themselves any depth music-wise. I don't find A Forest of Stars pretentious simply because, as you say, they're so good at doing what they do musically, along with the twist they add to their aesthetic. If they were shitty posers then they'd be pretentious.

Pretension is usually defined by how successful one is at living up the to the claims they make. It seems odd to me to call an album title "pretentious" when also agreeing that the band is largely successful at what they do. Then again everyone has a different perspective on what constitutes pretentiousness.

I approve of this definition. And it's not like they go around saying that they're the most innovative of the bunch or that they make the greatest music ever, I think it's just their public image that pisses people off.

Yep, they have a great, quirky image and style, and they definitely make it work.

Can't go wrong with either but the first album probably edges out the second by a little bit.

Indeed I don't find them very psychedelic to be honest, more atmospheric, but the band know how to use violins without sounding cheesy.

If it's anything as close to AFOS then it should be an amazing record! And since being English I love their image, nice and quirky.

I wonder if they play live in suits. Anyone got any info on that since i'm seeing them in 2 months?

Perhaps ostentatious was a better choice of words. I didn't realize so many people were hung up on a few comments about them being pretentious. It's all a matter of opinion.

Oddly enough I've always felt that their costumes were pretty much their own version of corpse paint... Plenty of bands have their own version of war paint and AFOSs just seems to be a little less traditional though I can only imagine wearing suits on stage must be stupidly warm.
