Melancholy Metal / Why no good metal out of Manchester?

We talk about Manchester, England's new law protecting metalheads and started discussing whether there actually WERE any metalheads in Manchester because we couldn't think of any bands from there. There are plenty of brit-rock bands that are great for their genre - Elbow, Stone Roses, Doves, et al - but no metal. Anyone familiar with that scene who can comment?

Wondered if Manchester produces too much melancholy in its population and if there is any melancholy metal.

Laws protecting metalheads?

I think in England a law has been passed last week where attacks on metalheads/goths can be considered hate crimes.

We talk about it at either the 15 or 30 minute mark. At the 45 minute mark we start sucking Clutch's cock.

Is there such a thing as "melancholy metal"? I think bands can have moments of melancholy but I can't think of a band that has done it throughout.

I'm not sure what you mean by melancholy. Most of the music I listen to, metal or otherwise, is very melancholy. There's certainly no shortage of metal bands that are thoroughly sad, chronically depressed, desperately romantic or melodramatically woeful. Two of my top 5 metal bands are pretty much nothing but acute melancholia: The Angelic Process and Warning. Most doom metal (and plenty of gothic, black and folk metal, too) is very melancholy.

Or do we have different definitions?

Yeah, no metal from there at all....

Honestly seems like the most benign question in the history of metal.

INdeed. Okay not too many well-known bands but still something such as Winterfylleth is from Manchester.

As for melancholy metal, most doom would fit in there. So, yet, another stupid question.

Don't think doom aligns with melancholy exactly - there's still angst in that music.

So, yet, another stupid question.

Just one of the services I provide.

Winterfylleth is really good, btw. I dissed on them on the show but I hadn't heard them (I provide that service too). Now I have. Now I stand corrected.

When it comes to having no good metal, Manchester has nothing compared to Kansas.

Winterfylleth have been mentioned a couple of times and they are killer, Acolyte is good too, A II Z are somewhat of a cult NWOBHM classic as are Amethyst, Atavist are great sludge, Hecate Enthroned are quite good too

Yeah Marcel has mentioned all the bands I'm aware of. Good set of bands. I have a review coming for the new Acolyte album too, which is already a highlight of this year.

Got them with the help of Metal Archives. But those are the only ones from that list I actually know.
But to be honest I was immensely surprised at how low the number of bands from Machester is, 130 for a city of 450,000 whereas Utrecht has about 140 on a population of 320,000 and we're not exactly a metal hotbed in the Netherlands either
