Black Sabbath - Win Grammy For Best Metal Performance

The 56th annual Grammy Awards happened last night in Los Angeles and the winners are known. Black Sabbath took home the award for "Best Metal Performance" for "God Is Dead?", from their comeback album 13. Anthrax, Dream Theater, Killswitch Engage and Volbeat were also nominated in that category.

The Best Rock album was Led Zeppelin's Celebration Day. Metallica didn't win in the "Best Recording Package" category but they did perform their hit song "One" with pianist Lang Lang.

The ceremony closed with a collaboration of Nine Inch Nails, Queens Of The Stone Age, Dave Grohl and Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham. The performance was cut short when CBS began rolling end-of-show credit. And Trent Reznor wasn't happy about it.

So Led Zep wins best rock album for their 2007 live performance? LOL. Only the Grammys can do that. Lame.

Of course it was a mess, did not expect anything else.

Look at Ozzy's happy face? Really? Again, lame.

CD was released on CD, DVD & BD near the end of 2012. "The eligibility period for the 56th Annual Grammy Awards was October 1, 2012 to September 30, 2013" Are you always the kind of guy who does zero research?

I'm sure all of these big award ceremonies have no clue about metal. It is always an established (old) band that wins. I bet they don't even try to find something new or underground...

Why on Earth would you expect them to do so? Pop music is pop music... there's never anything new beyond the most grotesquely plain and obvious (see: Lady-who-should-be-Gagged's choices of dress (or otherwise))

Summary:
- Black Sabbath wins Grammy for one of their most mediocre songs.
- Metallica performs the worst version of "One" I've heard.
- CBS are a bunch of assholes.

I understand, the album entered the time frame, but a live album to win best rock album is not such a great idea. Aren't there enough studio albums they can choose from, even in the mainstream? I don't get it.

No, they just don't care. I'll be surprised if the latest Beatles collection doesn't get some Gramm-attention next year. I don't know how many people have been squabbling over a decade for Rush to be added into the R'n'R Hall of Fame, but it's a lot - and there'd probably be no Rush if there was no Zep. It (CD)'s their latest release in some time and LZ's so big, respected and (that performance) acclaimed, it was bound to be nominated

Why on Earth would you expect them to do so?

Because it is their job, or a least you would hope so. Looking at the results though you would think otherwise.

It is foolish to expect any large awards ceremony to look for unpopular and underground acts, no matter what calibre they may be of.

That experimental death/doom metal band won't win a Grammy, and neither will that mesmerizing art film win an Oscar, either.

I do not see the point of this useless discution. If people have not caught on with some facts, you should know that these kind of awards and those that organize them don't give a damn about best metal performance or best w.e. they only care for big ratings, money at the end of the line. They have to choose bands that have a strong commercial presence and that have a huge fan-base.

Underground acts will never get the respect they desire from such awards. Plus, an award does not make you great musician and Metallica's performance of One clearly proves the lack of vision they had when they made this cover. They only did it for the sake of doing it, not because it might impress someone.

We should probably write something like that before each award.

The funny thing is that the message it's mostly for people like us... Since the majority won't complain because they voted for the popular band.

I wonder if next week the Metalstorm Awards will follow the same route as the Grammys. Go for the headlines, big names, get your little website noticed.

or

Will they do it properly. Nominate and vote for the best bands, songs, albums and videos. The ones who deserve it, through talent, not just to grab the ratings.

I hope I know the answer.

If it's anything like last year, it's probably gonna be a blend of both, with people, rather than voting for actually good bands/albums/songs, voting for the stuff they actually care about, whether its good/popular or not being irrelevant.

And the rest of the world won't even blink an eye towards it.

The MS Awards have always been popularity contests. Don't lie to yourselves, younglings.

Speaking of which, holy shit. I returned just in time for the awards. Not that I've actually listened to any new metal from 2013, but oh well.

The Metallica performance was a mess. Did not work at all. It was painful until the fast bit at the end which only just saved it from embarrassment.

I thought the fast bit was the worst part of it all, it sounded like an incoherent cacophony of noise.

Meh, fuck the Grammys. Who cares really? Of course it's biased. It's not metal fans picking, why would they pick something that only a metal fan could really appreciate? They have to pick the bands with the most commercial appeal because that is what the Grammys stand for. All this debate, I'd rather there wasn't even a metal category to be honest. Metal has no business at the Grammys, nor punk, nor any forms of music that don't cater to the mainstream. Let pop music have this one.

Yeah yeah, Grammys suck, blah blah blah, no metal in Triple J's Hottest 100 either, blah blah commercialism. I know, lets have best pop, country and rock (not hard rock) awards in the metal awards. That'll show 'em.
Because the Grammy people really care what the people they don't cater to think of them.
I'm still gonna vote for Battle Beast, but now I kinda hope Sabbath win the MS Award just to see the crying of how the metal community doesn't know what good metal is either. Remember- the only person with good taste is yourself.

Why are you people so odd over who wins the grammys? Do you really care that much? Does it matter? Of course the big names are always going to win. Do you really expect some underground (post) Black/doom band, that a fraction of the metal community like, should win a grammy. When bands like Black Sabbath, Metallica, Iron Maiden sell so well, why would they go trawling the underground to see what's there. Just because something is popular and commercially successful, does not make it less metal. Personally i think the likes of Metallica et al on the grammys is good for metal. It shows metal in a good light. Can you imagine if it was someone like Watain on the grammys. We'd be back to being the laughing stock of the music world where no one would take it seriously.

Having said that, Metallica and Lang Lang was terrible. It might not of been so bad had they been able to use there own sound guy. At some points the piano was the loudest thing on the stage. The same can be said for the NIN and queens of the stone age thing. Awful sound, which has been mentioned by metal bands in the past who've played.

Here's to Metallica winning next year (if the album's done in time)

Exactly. If there was no metal award at the Grammys, people'd be complaining that metal is being snubbed.

Good call for bringing some respect back to the thread. It's funny how sometimes one's dislike of an event can overshadow the fact that a legendary metal band just won a Grammy.

I would say that they should have got a Life Time Achievement Grammy and NOT a Graamy for the incredibly average 13.
