Sounds like pretty nice 90s alternative metal. Definitely more interesting to me than the stuff they're better known for.

The first 2 albums are glorious (still haven't heard Lateralus and the last one was okayish) so shut the fuck up.

Why does every album thread turn into this.

Is that a question or a statement?

Anyway, listening to Undertow now and it's not grabbing me nearly as much as this one.

started to make my way through their earlier records just last night and I'm on their debut right now. Leteralus is fucking prefect. Need to see how their first two LPs qualify considering the greatness of Lateralus.

From what I understand, they are different as in probably less proggy. But there's a rawness and darkness in the debut that just rocks.

I'm shocked to see there are still people who haven't given Lateralus a listen , for me it was the most life-changing album ever recorded ... It's like forced mental aging , I was a teenager then I was an adult the next day. :p

Literary, for about two months, I used to only listen to lateralus and on average, I played it 3 times a day The album was so huge for me that I was ambivalent about checking the rest of their discography for long time: either I could get a weaker album, which would have been the ultimate disappointing or get an equally good/better record meaning that I should again devote two months to one tool record

I might just put Lateralus on repeat one day and see if it sinks in. Feel like I'm missing out on something here.

Hey, it worked for Watershed.

I think you should try their debut again. I love it.

I'm sure I'll get round to it. Lateralus does seem to be the key one people tend to go for though.

Happened to me. I've been listening to Tool since 2006, but I only started appreciating the less popular parts of that album two years ago or so.

If you listen to Lateralus, avoid the last track. I hate the conspiracy theory tinged ending so much... Lateralus was an album that clicked for me immediately, though, and never really pulled away. Maynard and the band really click, and the contemplative sections are extremely well-executed. The Patient is my go-to track.

As for Tool, I have to give a shout out to Ænima, the Tool album that grew on me the most. I never got fully into that album until years after my "Tool phase", but now I tend to sympathize with people who think it's their best. Jimmy and Pushit will now forever hold a fond spot in my heart.

Same here - it's actually the only Tool album I like (although I haven't listened to this EP).

10000 days starts in a prefect manner but after the first two tracks there is a huge drop in quality. Might be the most inconsistent tool album.

I reckon that's a fair point.
