Over the last few albums, Avantasia have softened and smoothed out - matured, perhaps - and they arrive in Ghostlights a much different beast from the brash power project born the better part of two decades ago. Modern Avantasia sounds more "symphonic rock musical" than "metal opera." No harm done, though - it's only different, not worse.

Ghostlights is an album that for some reason never really clicked with me, something that actually surprises me to this day, because on paper I should absolutely love this album. Good lyrics, very good musicianship, great production should result in an album that I like. Instead it resulted in Ghostlights being an album that I neither love, nor hate.

Maybe the only bad thing I think this album will have:

NO HANSI KÜRSCH!!! And I don't understand why Tobi hasn't get him into this madhouse called Avantasia, even after having him at the Vain Glory Opera album...

When I can rate this, it'll be a 10 from me. This album is absolutely fantastic. Tobi has outdone himself. I really enjoyed The Mystery Of Time, and this one is much heavier and more bombastic than that one.

Album of the year (next to the new Megadeth) so far for me. It's fantastic how he managed to catch the old Queensryche vibe with the melodies for Geoff Tate on Seduction Of Decay). Excellent work!

This might be bigger band as his main band Edguy, to me it seems so

Not as appealing to me as some of their other stuff, but to each their own. Glad others can enjoy it.

Even Like Mystery Of A Blood Red Rose now. Found myself singing along.

Haha, I am in the same camp with that song. First time I heard it I was like "this is such a dumb song." Then I found myself singing along to it all the time and now I really enjoy it.

One of those generic power metal albums I can only listen to when I'm drunk.

How weird is that? Sounded like some poor Meatloaf rip off first time I listened. Now I can't get it out of my head, not in a bad way either. What is wrong with us?

Nothing is wrong, that's just the catchy melody a pop song though, like dyin for an angel, lost in space, but still catchy. Im not ready to give a rating for this album yet, but i must say....so far it is like a poison.

Just catchy, I guess. I do love the mix of metal and showtune-ish music WHEN it works.

I've also really been digging the chorus of "Draconian Love." Like holy sh*t. It actually reminds me of Amaranthe a bit.

It's ok I guess. Master of the Pendulum is actually very cool, the rest bored me, even when the performances are really good.

I really loved Avantasia up until The Scarecrow. The evolution from the Symphonic Power Metal sound to the more AOR mainstream radio was a natural one that seemed to be part of Tobias's shifting tendencies as well. Sadly, everything after Scarecrow was just generic mix of AOR/Melodic Metal that you easily get from an Edguy record. There's a reason why Edguy doesnt deliver a bomb for so long and the same reason why all these Avantasia records are just dull and generic: He's sticking to the same formula and redoing it over and over again.

I mean, there are some good melodies here and nice sing-along moments but it gets boring after a while and fails to impress.

Extremely fun album, some very cringe-worthy vocallines and skip-able tracks, overall its good and liked it better than most of their albums (excluding the 2 metal opera albums).

Pop music with some good vocals...

Really surprised at how good this album was... best since the Scarecrow for me, although Rose is simply too cheesy and don't like the ballad Evermore very much, either; he could have done much more with Sharon's voice.

First gig was Manowar (loincloths 'n' all), Bristol Colston Hall in March 1983, on the 'Hail to England' tour. Tickets were £3.75, 300 in the audience, Mercyful Fate never showed, but my hearing still got seriously trashed..
