Asphyxiating. Hellish. Unrepentingly dark. How does one adequately describe a modern metal album without resorting to to the same tired cliches that are tossed out by every record label and 2-bit amateur reviewer when they want to heap praise on whatever flavor-of-the-week metal band is "redefining dark"?

A wise man once said that "two heads are better than one," and perhaps no album this year has yet demonstrated the truth of this maxim better than Skáphe². The grand result of the combination of the talented Alex Poole (Chaos Moon, Esoterica, Krieg) and the mysterious D.G. (Misþyrming, Naðra), this album is a mesmerizing journey through the capabilities of two of the best composers modern black metal has to offer. AOTY contender.

Definitely a weird one coming up. From the song available those weird, wobbly riffs and murky production sound like something from an, eerie occult horror film. To be honest it sounds pretty fricking awesome and unique. Not far off some BTC stuff. If the album holds up to that this will be the one to beat this year.

I enjoyed the first album from this project and now throw the guy from Misþyrming into the mix. I'm excited to hear this.

Can't remember the last time I wanted an album so much, all based on one 5ish minute song I think this may have superseded my want for the new Aluk Todolo.

Ah, I see. That kind of "ok".

I thought maybe you had set your expectations a bit too high.

They were pretty sky high. After two great songs though I didn't think they could fail.

Those songs were great indeed. From what I remember they were pretty Arizmenda-esque so I'll definitely listen to the entire album at some point.

Yeah it conjures up feelings of a few bands, all great. Never seems to be a clone of anything though.

Oh, definitely. I just remember it as "that cool, weirdly named black metal thing with the great artwork that had some hints of Arizmenda"

"Scaphism, also known as the boats, was an ancient Persian method of execution designed to inflict torturous death that was described by the Persians' archenemies,....

The intended victim was stripped naked and then firmly fastened within the interior space of two narrow rowing boats (or hollowed-out tree trunks) joined together one on top of the other with the head, hands and feet protruding. The condemned was forced to ingest milk and honey to the point of developing severe diarrhea, and more honey would be poured on him to attract insects, with special attention devoted to the eyes, ears, mouth, face, genitals, and anus. In some cases, the executioner would mix milk and honey and pour that mixture all over the victim. He would then be left to float on a stagnant pond or be exposed to the sun. The defenseless individual's feces accumulated within the container, attracting more insects which would eat and breed within the victim's exposed flesh, which?pursuant to interruption of the blood supply by burrowing insects?became increasingly gangrenous. The individual would lie naked, covered from head to toe in milk, honey, and his own feces. The feeding would be repeated each day in some cases to prolong the torture, so that fatal dehydration or starvation did not occur. Death, when it eventually occurred, was probably due to a combination of dehydration, starvation, and septic shock. Delirium would typically set in after a few days
In other recorded versions, the insects did not eat the person; biting and stinging insects such as wasps, which were attracted by the honey on the body, acted as the torture" wikipedi :S

It is a combination of wormlust and arizmenda. They went to a less "portal playing black metal " this time, but portal I would say is still an influence. Love the occasional melancholic tunes thrown into the mix.
An absolute killer of album. I didn;t expect them to mature their sound this much. For sure it is going to stay as one of the best BM records of 2016.
