Green Carnation - Line Up Split

Green Carnation frontman and guitarist Tchort has announced in an announcement on the band's website that the current line up of Green Carnation has split up.

"Although releasing the amazing concert DVD "A Night Under The Dam" earlier this year, the band felt drained of energy after the miserable organized USA tour put together by The End Records and their booking agent. The End Records being one of the main supporters of the band the last years, bringing hope back to Green Carnation's view on the music business, left the band with broken promises, huge debts, theft of license money and a poor organized tour draining the band for energy. The band doesn't blame The End Records for all of its problems, but they made a bad situation worse by first giving the tour a green light when the conditions for the tour were doomed from the beginning and then later withdraw license money, merchandise money, merchandise and not paying the band or its sound engineer, leaving the band in debts. All of which could have been avoided by cancelling the tour before it started. The End Records lost money on the tour as well, so why it wasn't cancelled when the contracts for the tour were offered to the label, is a unanswered question.

The deal for the tour was that Green Carnation would cover the flights to and from the USA, while the rest of the tour would be covered by The End Records and tour income. But in the end, the band covered the flights, their own fee, the fee of the sound engineer, some of the gas and hotel expenses during the tour, and paid for CD's that were sold during the tour. On top of that The End Records - withdraw the license money from the last album, took all the merch money and the CD's to cover their own losses. What The End Records had to gain from sending the band across the world, driving across the continent of America twice, just to come to a town where the local promoter haven't been seen around for the last 4 months, or arrive at clubs that don't even know you are coming, to clubs where the local promoter put up another show because the booking agent never replied to their booking confirmation so instead they went ahead and booked other tours on the same date.

In the end, it made the band members avoid live situations, tours and business partners. The band members felt they had little or nothing to give anymore, and I don't blame them. I saw where we were heading and it wasn't where we wanted to be at, so instead of ending up with a mediocre album, we decided to call it the quits after the most spectacular release we have produced so far; "A Night Under The Dam" on DVD."

Tchort will continue writing music under the name Green Carnation, but probably will never play live again with the band.

Well, I agree with Feanor. I too hope that now when Tchort will be the only composer, the good old times of Light of Day, Day of Darkness and Journey to the End of the Night will return.

Arghh!

Extremely sad news.. I love all their albums - and rate two inside my all-time top 5.. Hopefully Tchort will still manage to compose such brilliant albums despite this..

every band has to deal with the label from hell. Just an example, (nothing very related), another progressive band, Tool, had to deal with many, many legal disputes with their record label after their release of AEnima.
its unfortunate to see that this has split the family up. Whatever everyone's opinions are on the music, it doesn't matter, money is money, nothing to do with talent. The entire family is suffering for this, Tchort and all.

To those who thought this is good news:

Sure, if Tchort continues writing music on his own it probably won't sound like the later Green Carnation releases, but I can bet you it won't sound like "Journey to the End of the Night" or "Light of Day, Day of Darkness" either. Most musicians prefer to move forwards with the music they write, not go backwards.

With the rest of the band gone, Green Carnation won't play live again, which most surely does suck. It also means that it'll be harder to record an album because instead of ready musicians, Tchort will have to find session musicians.

Not really good news at all, is it?

it is, after all, a progressive band. As great as I think Opeth's Blackwater Park was, I don't see Akerfeldt and the family replicating the album, do you? Very appreciative of the new and innovative directions that prog bands take, whether they be as great as the previous efforts or not.

Well I partly agree with you. I don't expect the new Tchort's work to sound like Light of Day,... or Journey... I just hope Tchort's genius won't be kept down by the others. IIRC Journey... was composed mostly by Tchort and Botteri brothers (from In The Woods...) and it is excellent album by excellent musicians. Light of Day... was composed only by Tchort. It is very different from Journey... but it is excellent album. On Blessing... Tchort ceased to be the main composer, many of the tracks are the work of other members of Green Carnation (of that time) and for me this album is nowhere near to the previous ones. It's still quite good album, but absolutely no match for Light of Day... and Journey... The Quiet Offspring is (for me) even worse. Once again Tchort isn't the main composer here. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I simply feel that other members composing music had (for me) negative impact on the music of Green Carnation.

I don't expect another Light of Day... or another Journey... I think the next album will be different from these masterpieces. But I really, really, really hope that Tchort's genius will now appear in his full strength once again and another piece of art will see the light of our days.

That's a great shame and I'm sorry to read that and I thought things were more positive in the USA. Okay it just may be down to a booking agent. I shall e-mail Paul from November's Doom as they are on that label and see how they have treated his band and if they are happy with them.

Skurut, what you are saying is coming out wrong, and sounds untrue. Because other members composed music, it did not impact the music negatively, or else it would not have been produced; after all, If tchort did not like it, he'd have input. If tchort were doing all the work himself, Green Carnation might as well not be, and any of the members could be replaced easily based on ability to play. The fact that the family collaborates together is what makes green carnation. I understand if you don't like the direction the music went, but don't think tchort's "musical genius" is being held back, its simply assimilating with everyone else's from the band.

Argh, when I think they were forced to cancel their appearance at last year's Raismesfest, which would have been their first gig ever in France and that I would have attended... But given those explanations, I can only agree with the band's decision, so it's ok.

Lets hope Tchort can make something great from these foundations.

Well, the magical words in my post are "for me". I'm certainly not saying that when other members composed music it had negative effect on the sound of the band generally. It was negative for me - I didn't like their new sound very much. Of course I understand, that for many other fans it was a blessing and they like their newer albums much more than the older ones. Also I'm not saying that Tchort didn't like the sound of Green Carnation after Light of Day... However, when you work (compose) in a team, you must respect the opinions of your mates, if you want the cooperation to be successfull. You must find compromises between what you want and what the others want. For me the compromises had negative impact on the music. And I hope that now, when Tchort won't need to make compromises his music will become more complex and imaginative once again (like in Light of Day... and Journey...). Perhaps I'm wrong and he will continue in the way started by Blessing in Disguise. Then Green Carnation will probably cease to be my favourite band (although I will forever adore their first two albums). I don't believe that the probability of the improvement of their music in the way I like it would be higher in their last line-up than it is now, when Tchort is the only composer once again. For me the change is positive, because for me it (almost) cannot now be worse than it already was. We will see if I'm mistaken or not. The simple fact is, that I'm now looking forward to new albums of Green Carnation with much more hope than before. Many others are not and I understand it.

it's so sad to hear how some record companies seek their own profits whatever it costs, even with a band witch such style of music that will never be best-selling, even though it's original and fabulous. hope this terrible situation will mend in future.

Good thing I saw them live last year! Ahahaha! Although they did say they hoped to come back for an acoustic show.

The End is a good record label. Too bad it acted in this unprofessional manner (if this is true). The End have some really good prog bands on them, including a couple of favourites of mine.

Yeah, I look forward to see what Tchort will produce. All the people complaining ~ at least they're not splitting up. Tchort has Capathian Forest and Blood Red Throne to deal with, I imagine this makes him a very busy man, especially as far as touring is concerned.
