well, i was just curious, with all the metal imagery consisting of so many "musclebands"(manowar, venom, hammerfall etc) who try to look so tough and "heavy", and having muscly band members is a must.

i do, for health and looking good.

Poll

Why do you work out, if you do?

both of the above
93
don't work out

I do, and here's why:

I do desire a lean & muscular physique though and I'm getting there. Set my goal for 85kg (180lbs) at 9% bodyfat at a length of 170 cm (5.57 feet). I wish I was 6 feet tall though

Currently 38lbs to go, although I'll probably have to gain about 45lbs, and then cut down to 9%.

Drop your body fat goal. 9% is a lot for someone who is 180lbs.

I used to work out about ever day. Now I go three days a week at most. Mainly laziness, and a lack of improvment resulting in demotivation. Also, I can bearly run one mile and 6 mph. It's so boring...

I don't know, is it? I might go lower but I want to reach a bf% that is not too hard too maintain. Once I've reached my goal, I don't want to remain uberstrict concerning my food intake etc.

I'm pretty sure the average NHL player (6'0", 200lbs) has 5% body fat. It just means you'll have to bust your ass.

I have never placed any restrictions on my food intake. I've always eaten whatever and whenever I wish and my body fat looks like near zero. Same goes for my bro. And it's awesome to be top heavy, instead of bottom-heavy...
Then again I work out... mayb this also contributes to my low body fat... I seem to burn everything I consume inside of me during the day...

I voted "to look good" (because i do, as any rational being, enjoy the attention of the opposite sex), but my main reason for it is to clear my head. it does work that way. actually, it works that way sometimes way too well. look at the people who do sports for a living. all they have is instincts and a mellow breeze blowing in their mind. (since i don't want to be that guy, i try to not work out too often. )

Are you sure that it's rational? If you leave all emotions aside. (I'm not saying that people have to be rational. On the contrary - we are among the few beings on earth who are capable of irrationality .. that's gotta mean something, right?)

Absolutely, as it works the same way heterosexual attraction, though we could argue......"NO attraction is rational as we've no control over it". Your attraction controlled be testostrone, mine by estrogen. Be it bi, homo, hetero, none of them are actually rational because if you find someone attractive you simply do with no control of that part of it. It's almost, or actually is instinctive. I know, men don't like it, the vast majority of them are paranoid about it. lol

We are quite paranoid about it, aren't we?

Why yes and it's not a good thing, but why isn't it? Well when you try to put out that you're just so perfectly straight it sends 2 messages to women, either you're egotistical and we don't want that, or that you are infact gay, otherwise why would you try to impress other men? Because men certainly DO NOT try to chest thump to women, they do it with other men, trying to impress upon other guys that they're very manily and it .......just comes acrossed as homoerotic to me. I'm like "oh dude he must want him, no other reason to do that". lol

I don't know trying to prove you're heterosexual to other mean by attempting to be masculine with the same sex.......shouldn't you be worried about the opposite sex?

That being said I know this isn't you you were talking about looking nice for the ladies, so no worries for you. lol

Nah man, on stage body builders have 2 / 3 / 4% and that takes a lot of dedication & chemicals, most fitness models etc are at 5 / 6 / 7% I believe and only for a couple of days, 8 to 9% is achieveable and maintainable. At least that's what I've always heard. Don't really care about the number, I'm currently twelvish and I look ok, so I just want to drop a bit and then keep it at that.

Back when I was in the military I was a legit fitness nut. I got my body up to 220 pounds at 6 1/2% body fat. It can be done, if you just dedicate yourself to it. Lots of running.

Yeah I know it is possible, but I do want something that I can maintain. I don't see the point in being at 6.5% for just a couple of weeks. But maybe 7 or 8 is a better goal, I'll figure that out by the time I'm 190 pounds.

There is no need to get lower. I was just making an example. That 6.5% body fat only lasted about three years. I'm probably around a 8 right now.

I'm slightly bigger than you, and i can tell you're confusing the numbers here. if you really wear 28, then that means, according to this: http://www.asos.com/infopages/SizeGuide/pgesizechartMan.aspx , that you have a 71-centimeter waist, which is impossible even at your weight.

My jeans/dress pants are all either size 28 or 30 (which are a little loose so I have to wear a belt).

I'm a 26-27...

I may be slightly jealous. It's hard to lose weight with the way I eat, and the fact I have low blood sugar and a slow metabolism. The only thing that keeps me from gaining weight...is...I'm a medical marvel? I don't work out enough to lose weight (or gain weight for that matter). It's a mystery to everyone.

I had a bit of an eating disorder back in high school, but even now that I'm over it I just haven't been able to gain weight. I eat like shit often, so my daily calorie consumption isn't the problem.

And you don't need to work out to look bigger. Just grow your hair more.

I have VERY high metabolism, but I don't see the problem at all with a guy being thin or having a small waist, etc etc. I wouldn't try to gain too much in my opinion unless you're trying to do something completely different.

I'm not trying to gain weight, but I'd welcome it. People often make snide remarks in regards to my weight and then subsequently point out my dietary flaws. It gets annoying after a while. Especially from fatties.
