For me, its Master Of Puppets. From the opening riff of Battery to the closing note of Damage Inc, the songs are well structured, powerful and remind me why Metallica were the first band I really got into all those years ago.
I did a search and couldn't find a similiar poll, so if there has been one already I apologise.
I also realise I have left of Garage Days Re-visited and S&M but decided they dont really rate in the poll.
Would love to read what anyone else has to say.

Kill 'em All was pretty much the debut thrash album and also one of Metallica's best.

I voted for Ride the Lightning. This is because it showed that they could expand on their music while keeping the essentials for what made it what it was... For a few years anyways. I find a lot of thrash bands fail to do this, and it can result in music that sounds too similar in each album and loses impact after a while.

I would say Kill Em All. From what I understand KEA was the album that basically contained the sound that every band was trying to get at the time but couldn't quite achieve. It was not only a break through album for Metallica but also the album that broke thrash through. I think this would also go to show how important and great of a band Metallica were. A lot of people seem to forget how much of an impact they made in the 80's because of how big they are today.

Although other Metallica are better (Ride the lightning is my favorite) i think the black album is the most important. It was really the first album to really bring Metal to the attention of everyone in the world and for good or better, it has really shaped not just metal, but the whole of popular culture. Its hard rock influenced metal inspired countless bands. Although not the best metal/ hard rock has spawned from its style (nickleback cough*). The black album is what bought many people to the genre of metal and no matter how bad you may think they are, Metal needs mainstream bands to bring new fans to the attention of the genre.

I think "Kill 'Em All" and "Master of Puppets", the former was the official presentation of the "Thrash Metal" genre, and the latter is one of the best "Thrash Metal" albums ever. My favourite is "...And Justice For All", though.

I say Ride The lightning is more important than Master due to it being the blueprint of Master looking at the way master is built up. I would dare say Metalluica is their most important cause it propelled the band into the mainstream

Well, I guess it all comes down to whether you see their most "important" album as the one that exposed them to the biggest audience, or the one that was the most influential on the metal world as a whole. If the latter is the criteria, then I'd say "Ride The Lightning" is definitely their most important album. And I'd say in terms of influence, all 4 of Metallica's 80's albums are more important than the black album. Then again, you could reasonably argue that all the 80's thrash bands who became more mainstream post-black album did so as a direct result of the Black Album's success. So it certainly did influence the metal scene at the time for sure...

By the looks of the poll it appears as the question is "which is your favorite Metallica album?" KILL 'EM ALL has to be the most important Metallica album, it's common sense since it's the first Metallica album and maybe even first pure thrash metal album.
