Our government came up with a rather nifty solution. It is not illegal to sell sex, but it is illegal to buy sex and to profit from someone else selling sex. This makes it so that the hookers can't get caught if they report the customers and pimps, and gives them some form of protection.

And no, legalizing the prostitution industry would be highly idiotic, and I find myself asking the question whether any of the people supporting legalization have ever dealt with any people involved in it or criminals in general.

And shut the fuck up about damage limitation! If it was legal, then the industry would grow exponentially, affecting far more people. How is that for damage limitation?

Let's just say that when we decided to give the hookers this type of protection the problems with prostituiton dropped by half, and we got to a point where we could actually sometimes get to the pimps. I don't say that's idiotic.

As for what hookers cost, that would depend on what hookers you were talking about. There are drug addicts that cost extremely little and luxury hookers that cost extremely much.

No, Ive never heard anything about that. But Id imagine different prostitutes charge different amounts. I dont think its a set amount. Its not as if the industry is regulated or anything.

Logical answer: Prostitution is business, business is about demand and supply so:
If there are many customers and a few prostitutes, prices are high.
If there are many prostitutes and a few customers (I think there's no such a place...), prices are low.
If there is a balance between demand and supply, price is at the middle.

... or you could just rip off all the horny customers, they'll pay.

i looked up your city on wikitravel and i gotta say i never actually thought it would have this reputation of violence, or that prostitution would be legal there. anyway i guess it's all too common for you, same as for someone else it would be uncommon to turn down beggars or prostitutes/female pimps (which operate illegally) at every other street corner in "certain" areas of Bucharest

@Bad English i know in Germany where it's legal, there's a sort-of standard "fare" which is 60 euros. here it usually costs anything from 50 lei (12 euros) the lesser attractive ones to 200 lei (~45 E) for the upper class ones to more for the educated escort gals. you might argue that's not too much but then again 200 lei is one sixth of an average monthly salary around here, fuck!!

Just over a year ago, a report showed that Glasgow has more teenage gangs than London, despite London being more than 6 times the size of Glasgow.

Yes, it is common for me. Somtimes I dont feel safe even when Im inside the flat. Although gang/yob culture is like a plague in Glasgow's urban areas. Its just that some areas are even worse than others. But they all suffer with the problem to some extent.

Well, just less than 5 minutes from where I live, there is the "nice bit" with bought houses, and virtually no problems with neds. Its like a different planet. I think because of the amount of urban areas with gangs, most decent areas of the city are not far away from the bad areas.

I've read on London and its recent uprise of gang violence and it would seem to me with a much higher population they would have more gangs than your "nightmarish" Glasgow. Of course, per capita would be a different story and you're witness to what goes on within your city so I might be unaware of certain facts...

To be more on topic, prostitution should be legalised for the betterment of the economy obviously. A whole new market would be brought into legal grounds. What does that mean ? More job opportunities, more cash for the government and less in the pockets of criminals. Why does that matter ? Higher employment rate and possibly a better fiscal policy, if your government is competent.

It's just in terms of ethical behaviour that prostitution is controversial and I do understand that to a certain degree.

edit : I ignored STDs. lol. Would have to be government regulated.

A UN report in 2005 stated that excluding murder, a Scot is 3 times more likely to be a victim of violent assault than an American. And compared the level of violent crime with cities like Rio De Janeiro. It said that the "booze and blades" culture of the West of Scotland was mainly responsible for the figures. And pinpointed Glasgow as a particular hotspot. Glasgow has a small population compared to those US cities you mentioned, and London, so of course it's per capita. Although a 2008 report stated that Glasgow has 200 teenage gangs, which is more than London has. And that isnt per capita, it meant that Glasgow literally has more teenage gangs than London. 6 times more, if it's on a per capita basis. Another 2008 report, said that per head of population, Glasgow is more violent than New York. Which was once notorious for it's violence levels. The crime figures for 2006-07 showed that for every 100,000 people, there were 731.39 incidents in Glasgow compared to 631.30 in New York.

There is no need to list my sources, these statistics, and findings of these (and other) reports should be very easy to find for anyone wanting to obtain them. Of course, I would say to class it as the most violent city in the developed world, may be pushing it slightly. But its definitely one of the worst. And yes, I have personally witnessed the violence that goes on in my city on a few ocassions. So Im also talking from personal experience, not just statistics.

So, the lesson learnt here is not to move to scotland ? .. coz its defnitely WAY better than other parts of the world

Not quite... The lesson to be learnt is don't move to Glasgow., Unless you have a lot of money, and can avoid the scummy urban areas of the city. lol

I am right now, trying to move out of the area where Im currently living. But without the money to buy a place, Im stuck on waiting lists. And waiting lists for half decent areas are huge...

i'm kinda curious why does this happen in Cairo while other huge islamic-culture cities have no such problems?
