Hey guys!

So as the title says, I am looking for songs and or bands that have lyrics with a Christian or Spiritual message to them. Now, the bands does not have to be "Christian" for this. The reason I am looking for them is I am trying to build a large collection for worship, and any suggestions will be most helpful.

Some of the songs I currently use are:

'Crucify' - James LaBrie
'Safe Home' - Anthrax
'Image of the Invisible' - Thrice
'In Christ' - Living Sacrifice
'Superior' - Extol
'Rose Of Sharyn' - Killswitch Engage
'Fields of Despair' -DragonForce
'Fight' -Gamma Ray
'1000 Apologies' Demon Hunter
'In My Time Of Need' - Opeth
'Take Away My Pain' - Dream Theater
'Passion' - Stryper
'Recreation Day' - Evergrey
'I Will Follow' - Fear Factory
'Someone Else?' -Queensryche

The metal style doesn't matter. It can be Power metal to Black Metal.

Thanks for all your help,
Hemlock

Oh, does anyone know of any bands that are more 'extreme'? Sort of like Kekal?

Crimson Thorn is a very extreme Christian death metal band. I'm surprised I forgot them. Their album "Dissection" is really heavy. Unfortunately, the only lyrics I can make out on the whole album are "The Lord is my strength and my sword." Gets the point accross but I wish I could pick out more, and that song ("My Salvation") is only 48 seconds long.

They also covered "Loud 'n' Clear" by Stryper.

Flaw is a Nu Metal band, currently disbanded, that has or had some very positive lyrics. The lyrics of the band were written by the vocalist, Chris Voltz, which seem to be inviting the listener to have a better life and to look at things more positively (at least in the only album I have heard from them: Through The Eyes). This song was written by him about his feelings from his mother's suicide:

"Whole"

So maybe I am bound by fate
A problematic scarring induced by hate
It never seems to all pan out
Is that what all this teaching is needed to scout
You seemed to have a bad effect
Your rules and contradictions I would neglect
Though not my fault you made me feel
Like my own education wasn't truly real

Chorus:
Then you came right in tearing out my soul
How could all this loss be your only goal
I'm left standing here desperate in the cold
Since you took your life mine has not been whole

So there I stood a scolded child
The reasons never questioned
My pains been filed
Inside this place that makes me feel
I learned life is unfair and that is very real

Chorus

While you try to overcome the lesson
Making the most of those questions that just keeps me guessing
I'm looking longer, harder, further than I ever have
Solitude breaking me down you always seemed glad
To put me down and stick me in that little pit
Personal growth as a child that mattered not a bit
Then I became the person that you hated most
Disrespecting the father, son, and holy ghost
A small example of what the things you've done to me
Have changed in my life and changed the things that I can't be

I'll never be!!

Chorus

There is also this disbanded, Christian Metalcore band from the US: Symphony In Peril. They are average Metalcore, at least the record I own: The Whore's Trophy (people assure that their previous work is better but I haven't heard it yet). This next song is one of the best in their The Whore's Trophy album; the song is titled "For Now We See In A Mirror, Dimly But Then Face To Face":

Quiet this night and open these eyes. I find myself lost in the shuffle. This breath of life is getting complicated, and my mind has shut down. This rope's end is harder to hold. I'm at the point of surrender, but I can't let go. Lifting my hands used to be simple, but I fight to give it all. I can't fake it anymore. Take this life and make it yours. Bend this will until it breaks. I am yours. You can have me. Take my heart and lift it up, and I will hold onto you. I am yours. You have me wanting and needing more, aching and longing to hold you. It is becoming harder to know my own self. I feel that from a distance, I am watching my life get turned upside down. I have been so thirsty. Why can't I notice me and stop lying to myself? I asked for this portrait. I pleaded for this, but now I bend under the load of responsibility. Will it all fall by the wayside, and will I let it? Will there be anything left to hold onto but me? I need you more than I need myself. I can't do this on my own.

Here's one, although you wouldn't guess it by the song title: Skyfire - Timeless Departure - By God Forsaken.

The chorus goes:
Look at my life
What do you see?
Where is the light, that used to be?
Can't you see what you're doing to me?
My soul is fading away

Which is followed up by:
Spread your wings, and fly away
From this, prodigal world
Have no fear, you child of mine,
You'll see, your time will come

The singer, Henrik Wenngren (although Martin Hanner wrote these lyrics) mentioned once that this is supposed to be a dialogue between man and God wherein man is almost unable to bear the pain of the world any longer, but God speaks out to him and reassured him that there is a greater life ahead.

And of course there's also these lyrics:
My God, is heaven upon me?
We've spent a lifetime in this deep, cold, daze
One life, one man, this is our God's sacrifice

And what's wrong with Blaze? His voice suits that song, with its dark, brooding nature, more than Bruce's.

Personal preference, that's all

Wow, cool. Thanks man. I have never heard of this band, but I am going to research them right now. Is there an album or two that you would recomend?

I own their CD "Das Beste aus Gottes Beitrag und Teufels Werk," which is essentially a best of CD. So that's what I would offer in terms of recomendations.

Nice. Most of Skyfire's lyrics are spiritual in nature, although more often than not they deal with depression and the human psyche; I forgot about that one, though!

Yeah, and there are a few that seem to pretty much straight-up deny God's existence (The Universe Unviels, Shapes of Insanity, Dead Man's Race, Cursed by Belief), although all of them are very cryptic anyway.

I'll go with some classics, as well as a few death metal songs with Christian ideals.

Black Sabbath - After Forever
---------------------------------
Have you ever thought about your soul - can it be saved?
Or perhaps you think that when youre dead you just stay in your grave
Is God just a thought within your head or is he a part of you?
Is christ just a name that you read in a book when you were in school?

When you think about death do you lose your breath or
Do you keep your cool?
Would you like to see the pope on the end of a rope
Do you think hes a fool?
Well I have seen the truth, yes Ive seen the light and Ive changed my ways
And Ill be prepared when youre lonely and scared at the end of our days

Could it be youre afraid of what your friends might say
If they knew you believe in God above?
They should realize before they criticize
That God is the only way to love

Is your mind so small that you have to fall
In with the pack wherever they run
Will you still sneer when death is near
And say they may as well worship the sun?

I think it was true it was people like you that crucified christ
I think it is sad the opinion you had was the only one voiced
Will you be so sure when your day is near, say you dont believe?
You had the chance but you turned it down, now you cant retrieve

Perhaps youll think before you say that God is dead and gone
Open your eyes, just realize that hes the one
The only one who can save you now from all this sin and hate
Or will you still jeer at all you hear? yes! I think its too late.

Iron Maiden - Revelations
-----------------------------
O God of earth and altar
Bow down and hear our cry
Our earthly rulers falter
Our peolple drift and die
The walls of gold entombe us
The swords of scorn divide
Take not thy thunder from us
But take away our pride
(g. k. chesterton: english hymnal)

Just a babe in a black abyss
No reason for a place like this
The walls are cold and souls cry out in pain
An easy way for the blind to go
A clever path for the fools who know
The secret of the hanged man - the smile on his lips

The light of the blind youll see
The venom that tears my spine
The eyes of the nile are opening - youll see

She came to me with a serpents kiss
As the eye of the sun rose on her lips
Moonlight catches silver tears I cry
So we lay in a black embrace
And the seed is sown in a holy place
And I watched and I waited for the dawn

The light of the blind youll see
The venom that tears my spine
The eyes of the nile are opening - youll see

Bind all of us together
Ablaze of hope and free
No storm or heavy weather
Will rock the boat youll see
The time has come to close your eyes
And still the wind and rain
For the one who will be king
The watcher in the ring
It is you

Opprobrium (aka Incubus) - The Decieved Ones
------------------------------------------------------
Bowing down to an angel cast out by god
Worshipping a deceitful enemy
Who's laughing at their pride in following him

Considering everyone to be merely human pigs
Under his cunning and evil eyes

A multitude is in total chaos
Knowing not the deceived ones that they are

Asking for power, richness and desire
The price that they must pay
Is their souls thrown into a cauldron of fire

By being weak and blind
The fools disrespect the christian houses of god
They are the opposite of all that is holy
Locked in cages of sins
How can they reject the creator of all living things

The almighty god hears the prayers from holy priests
And christians alike, forgiveness for them is at hand
But curses shall fall upon those that refuse to repent

God's only begotten son was scourged, mocked and put
To death and resurrected on the third day
Proved his powers to demonstrate
How goodness always prevails

Followers of damnation march on in their darkest ways
Falling to see and admit the truth tha christ left for us today

Atrocity - The Godless Years
-------------------------------
Hot desire, staggering passion
Graving complection and pefection
Made us blind
Greed of completeness made us, man
To subject and vassales of ourselves
Presumpteous creatures
How narrow are you ?
Self-aggrandized, destructive individuals
The believing in yourself
Growing up to selfishness
Egoism discards moral and ethics
Godless years shall arise
Godless years are devined
We provoke the death
We're damned to die
Mass-corruption dominates
World of lies and of sin
Godless years
We all live in
Self-nominated gods
You're only god's image
Those who believe in eternal resignation
Await your final downfall
Godless years shall arise
Godless years are devined
We provoke the death
We're damned to die
Mass-corruption dominates
World of lies and of sin
Godless years
We all live in
Lost in megalomania, unclean human beings (are)
Drunken by blood
Having the force
To judge about life and death
Never prudent, always merciless
Kingdom of waste and poverty, unclean human beings
Thirst for power
Might and pride
Glitter and gold rape their intellect
Rejection is calling primitive instincts
Godless years shall arise
Godless years are devined
We provoke the death
We're damned to die
Mass-corruption dominates
World of lies and of sin
Godless years
We all live in
Infamous world, whore, called babylon
Godless years, death to us..... and fear !
Hot desire, staggering passion
Craving completion and perfection
Greed of completeness made us, man
To subjects and vassales
Of ourselves
How much you have
Glorified yourself
So much torment and sorrow you'll get
Horde of protical sons
Await your final downfall
Godless years shall arise
Godless years are devined
We provoke the death
We're damned to die
Mass-corruption dominates
World of lies and of sin
Godless years
We all live in

I'm not sure how applicable these would be under your criteria, but both Judas Priest - Exciter and Judas Priest - Painkiller deal with messianic figures; in fact, Painkiller is a metal angel.

Exciter's lyrics (excerpt):
Who is this man?
Where is he from?
Exciter, come! For everyone
You'll never see him
But you will taste the fire upon your tongue

Painkiller:
Planet devastated
Mankind's on its knees
A saviour comes from out of the skies in answer to their pleas
Through boiling clouds of thunder
Blasting bolts of steel
Evil's going under deadly wheels

Ok, pretty cheesy, and not VERY christian, but there's some symbolism there :p

The first band that comes to mind is Orphaned Land, a religiously themed death/folk metal band (which is also really awesome, by the way).
Also you might try Avantasia, a power metal band with a lot of religious lyrics.
System of a Down has a song called "science" that might fit the bill. It's about how science is insufficient because it doesn't acknowledge the importance of faith.
I have no actual personal experience with this, but I have heard of the existence of an entire underground metal movement called "white metal" which is pretty much black metal with christian lyrics.

Iron Maiden - Revelations

Actually, that song is written about Alistair Crowley...not exactly very Christian! Although, it does deal with the idea of spirituality and has a cool bit from a hymn at the beginning, so I would say add it in anyway...you can't beat a Brucie penned track!

The Amputator
Orphaned Land are probably the band that would come to the forefront of my mind, since all their albums/songs have religious overtones, since they tell stories from the Old Testament.

Another band that comes to mind as writing some spiritual music would be Rudra, from Singapore. They call themselves 'Vedic Metal', because they frequently refer to Vedic philosophies and Hindu principles.

Actually, come to think of it, Blind Guardian have lots of very religious songs, like 'Another Holy War', 'The Script for My Requiem' etc.

I strongly recommend Tourniquet and Deliverance both being great christian thrash metal bands.
Also many of these christian metal bands would serve u well. I will put what metal bands i think they sound like next to thier name.

These are more power, melodic, and just traditional metl bands
Hallowed- Dream Theater
Harmony- Malmsteen
Barren Cross- Iron Maiden
Divine Fire- Rhapsody
Poetry of Dreams(not really christian but they send good messages of inspiration to thier listeners)-Dokken
Seventh Avenue-Blind Guardian

These are more heaveir like death, thrash, and yes even black(but most christian black metal is refered to as white metal)
Anaemia-Exodus
Consecrator-Kreator
Betrayel-Megadeth, Testament
Godfear-Pantera
Jesus Freaks-Metallica
Tourniquet-Metallica, Mercyful Fate
Deliverance-Slayer, Metallica
Dead Pharisees-D.R.I
Immortal Souls-Childern of Bodom
Renascent-Arch Enemy
Tormented Death- Cannibal Corpse
Antestor-Burzum
Crimson Moonlight-Dimmu Borgir
Holy Blood-Finntroll
Horde-Bathory, early Celtic Frost
Sanctifica-Emperor

I know some of these comparsions might be extreme for christian metal bands but i think that most of them sound very simlar to their non christian bands. I hope this helped u in some way. And if u want to know anythinig on christian metal or some songs or albums by these bands then im me. Thanks

White Metal is probably the most underrated genres of Metal. Here are my suggestions regarding White Metal bands (some might have already been mentioned in this forum):
FORSAKEN (any song or album, but especially "Dominaeon")
MORTIFICATION (Death Metal with Christian lyrics)
BARREN CROSS
STRYPER
WHITECROSS
CHASTAIN
PLACE OF SKULLS (check out their bone-chilling song 'Blood Of Jesus')
BLOODGOOD
HOLY SOLDIER
TOURNIQUET
SAINT
IMPELLITTERI
NARNIA (imagine Y. Malmsteen with Christian lyrics)

The list is endless but I'll stop here.

I highly recommend Neal Morse's solo carrier. he's latest, Sola Scriptura is an amazing concept progressive rock album, one of the best releases of 2007 until now. he's lyrics deal with christianity and spirituality in general.

another recommendation of mine is The Aurora Project, a young band from the netherlands. they've released only one lp, entitled Unspoken Words, in 2005. it's a concept album about a spiritual journey and such. they play atmospheric prog rock, with a metal edge, the music is sometimes similar to The 3rd And The Mortal.

Try this: King's X - Legal Kill

Perhaps the only song you'll find on a metal disc endorsing a pro-life sentiment

"I only know what I believe
The rest seems so absurd to me
I close my eyes but so I can't see
But the picture just gets clearer every day

I read somewhere to learn is to remember
And I have learned we all forgot
There was peace in her before, but that was yesterday

But I can see
The beauty that is here for me
A chance to live and walk free
From a Legal Kill

I know your side so very well
It makes no sense that I can tell
The smell of hell is what I smell
And you hand it out with handshakes everyday

I have trouble with the persons with the signs
But I feel the need to make my own
Yes there's two ways to be and truth does not depend on me

But I can feel
The fight for life is always real
I can't believe it's no big deal
It's a Legal Kill

I can feel
The fight for life is always real
And I can't believe it's no big deal
It's a Legal Kill

And I can see
The beauty that is here for me
A chance to live and walk free
From a Legal Kill

'Glory to the Newborn...'"
