Save me a seat on the "unique and original" bandwagon.

i also like whatever black metal acts that move me in a certain way, although that statement holds true when looking at specific subgenres within black metal, or taking a couple steps back and looking at metal as a whole.

I prefer Melodic black metal, not symphonic, you missed it, bands like Dark Fortress or Catamenia, I love them... BTW I don't think Viking Black metal exists, Viking is a lyrical theme, not a musical set of characteristics, the same for Suicidal/Depressive, that should be Blackened Doom or something, I like that too, for example Forgotten Tomb, they are masters at that.

Traditionnally, Viking metal is a cross between symphonic black and folk metal, with some power metal influences and other specific characteristics such as galloping drumming, etc. Other folk metal bands that have few or no black metal influences have been labelled viking metal because of their lyrical context, but they are a seperate subgenre.

mmm yep the genre people describe as Viking is quite varied, but by itself, Viking refers to a Civilization, culture and people, somebody from japan or brazil can perfectly play this merge, knowing little or even nothing about Thor, Odin or the Ragnarök, although it could be a separated genre, the name Viking is not so appropriate, just my opinion.

Except there aren't tens of Japanese bands who play this merge... It's like Gothenburg metal, it's just melodeath, but it has some characteristics shared by a number of bands, so it became a genre. Viking metal is a term that exists because it has a solid band basis to support it, I think. If lots of say, Japanese bands played black/folk in a similar way, maybe they would invent a new genre, like Shinto Metal or I don't know what...

Got Mayhem?
How did 'straight up blast-it-all-to-hell' black metal get left off the list

I can't really choose a favorite, they all have their faults and strengths. Not to mention how many sub-genres tend to be mixed within a single band, especially in a genre such as Black Metal.

I don't listen to a whole lot of black metal, but I'm quite fond of Wolves in the Throne Room, so I would say my favorite is atmospheric/ambient.

I'm gonna go with pre second wave black. A lot of this shit was just immense. Seriously, listen to this shit, it's basically the most evil shit ever written (written '84, recorded '87):

I don't really have a favorite type of Black Metal. I have favorite bands in many BM subgenres.
The only BM subgenre I utterly hate is depressive (suicidal) BM. I hate depressive music.

Raw old school Black Metal.
Music is not bad but I hate vocals on "Sventevith".

Ok so I voted for the "Anything else..." category due to the fact that my favorite flavor of Black Metal is either the old school Raw style (i.e. Mayhem, Darkthrone, etc.) or post second wave stuff like Dissection and Watain. Where would they fall in at? Just straight Black Metal? If the overall genre of Black Metal had a standard sound, and that sound was the second wave bands like Mayhem and their ilk, then where would that put an album like Lawless Darkness?? Still straight Black Metal? Or would it be somewhere else due to it's melodic guitar interludes? Or does it even matter as long as it rocks???

Oh and for clarification what I mean by post second wave is anything after the death of Oystein Aarseth. That's not something generally agreed upon however that is how I keep things straight inside my own twisted brain. Thought I'd clear that up since there might be some questions about it.

Atmospheric black metal. It's my favorite music genre. It's a great fusion between melody and rawness. I can't resist the awesomeness of bands like Drudkh and Wolves In The Throne Room.

Definitely 'Atmospheric/Ambient Black Metal' for me.

I'd say to a certain degree that all Black Metal is atmospheric. I dare say, as far as the sound is concerned (minus lyrical theme and imagery, that is) that 'atmosphere' is the genres defining feature.

But definitely in those artists / bands whom stretch the atmospheric qualities of their sound to the limits do I find the most appeal.

I love all kinds of black metal. I really do prefer the lo-fi chaotic brand the most of course.

And I don't care for bands that force the SATAN thing too much. I am all fine and good with Satan, we're bros and all, but I hate when a band just screams SATAN SATAN SATAN over and over lol.

I like black metal that focuses on war, apocalypse, death, anti-religion, misanthropy, anguish, despair, and anger the most.

Most importantly, I find it one of the most emotional and expressive genres out there, so if I don't feel anything when I am listening to it, forget about it. I have to feel it to love it.
