I was really surprised to see that this outstanding album didn't have any reviews here. In an effort to make that right, lets start. What we have here is an album that consists of only one, 40 minute long song. For those who are not familiar with Crimson yet, don't be afraid. Songs over 10 minutes long are not so uncommon in metal, but even the most progressive of bands often fall into the trap of making them too dull and not really enjoyable after first few minutes - the story about Crimson Queen is definitely not.

I think Purgatory Afterglow is the only album that can touch the Crimson twins. Everything else goes from modest to meh-dest.

This album is one of the most brilliant albums ever made. I still can't understand why this album is in 18th position in the Top 200, it deserves a much higher position. Besides, I think it's just ridiculous the fact that Number Of The Beast is in a higher position. It's like a joke. A BIG joke.

Not as ridiculous as Ride The Lightning being in a higher position.

Obviously everyone's top 200 would be different in some ways, pointing out how "ridiculous" it is when you personally think something is too high or too low is pointless if you ask me.

Mattybu said it. Let's try to keep the conversation about the album in question rather than its position on the Metal Storm charts in relation to other albums. Otherwise we'd be here for a long time with x deserves to be higher than y and so forth.

Yeah, you really got to hate (progressive) death metal if you dislike this album.

Total masterpiece indeed. Spun it a short while ago and even after all these years I still enjoyed as much as I used to. Probably the best concept album ever, as well.

I still cannot believe this album came out when it did. So ahead of its time. The definition of extreme progressive metal in my book.

Edit: Cannot get enough of this masterpiece. Keeps getting better and better after each listen.

Not as good as everyone seems to think it is, not in my ears. I'd say there's enough material here for a great 20-25 minute song but not quite enough for 40 minutes, some parts sound uninspired and boring. Strange that this is the highest rated album by one of Dan's projects here. I'd say many of his other albums (Moontower for example) are better by a country mile.

EDIT: This album has grown on me. Like a parasite or a fungus or something. But like a totally badass, but also cute death prog fungus. Hence the 9.

I remember picking this up when i was about 16 and thinking, "I'll have to listen to it in short sessions"; was sure a forty-minute album could not hold my attention especially on a first listen. Needless to say I ended up listening to the album at least 5-6 times that day back-to-back and it didn't leave my CD player in my truck for at least a week all the while telling everyone I knew to check this record out. To this day their are few records that can truly capture me into another world and by god this is one of them.

When this album came out my friend picked it up immediately and hailed it ever since as his favourite death metal album, by a band the two of us have been completely unaware of before. I on the contrary was not that overwhelmed at the beginning. A great album, for sure, but far from my favourite, too many mediocre parts, I used to say. Look, I told him, I also just found us an album by a band we have never heard of before, it is called Morningrise. And there is even this same guy involved in both albums. This is the new path of death metal I will dig much more, I said. We went on with our choices.

Only several years later -- contact to my friend unfortunetely long lost -- I learned to appreciate the unconditional excellence of Crimson. Since that moment both albums, Crimson and Morningrise, remained among my top 10 favourite metal albums of all time. If only I could tell my friend one day how right he has always been about this masterpiece, I sometimes think.

maybe because the version I listened to the tracks were separated ? I mean if you cut down Dopesmoker it wouldn't be the monster that it is
definitely going to relisten to it

What do you mean you listened to the separate version?

That you listened to the whole album but with the separate songs (which if you listened to it that way is the same because they all have like a transition).

Or you listened to it with random songs? or you didn't listen to the whole album at the same time, so you listened for example Crimson pt.1 and then part 5 and so on consecutively to complete the album.

it was in 8 parts , kinda ruins the feeling of 1 big epic song

I disagree, Dan Swanö is a great vocalist, whether he sings clean or growls, just as good as Mikael, if not better.
