Why we (metal heads) cant enjoy new albums by old bands nowadays?

If someone cant see good things in new albums (I dont mean none famous bands which ONLY YOU discover them ), I think they are really tired of metal and unfortunately I think you are who weakens metal music nowadays. If you dont like a band or dont like their new stuff or new album thats really ok. But whats your goal by spaming threads or writing despiteful reviews over and over again?
What do you think of these ppl who want to say "we are different because we heard almost all metal albums and we are especial because when you look at our favorite band list in MS you will see names which you never heard them yet". If you ask them "why?" they would probably answer "because we want to make them famous and maybe ppl bought their albums, we want to help them because we like them "(not love them because they love some famous bands which they will kill themselves to see them live in fests but not for these which they mentioned in their favorite band list!) Then when they become a little famous these are the same ppl who erase them from their favorite band lists and start to criticize them.
Another question is how the fuck you listen to a lot of albums?! I cant understand it when I see someone has heard almost all of the new albums of the year (or maybe they pretend it). I think you have to listen to each album at least 5 times to talk about it but a lot of them after half a round come and say this is bullshit, maybe they are wizards or maybe Experts.
What do you think about these ppl and if you are one of them plz enlighten us maybe one day we would be experts like you and hate a lot of good metal albums!
But for me myself Im really really sick of them.

27.09.2010 - 01:52 Written by Angelic Storm on 27.09.2010 at 01:29 OMG, at least someone rational here its what Im trying to say. If I like Death Magnetic for example it doesnt mean that I lost my mind for Metallica. I like that album, so simple! When I wearing a metallica shirt it doesn mean that Im really low level lol (btw: fuck levels!) I was in the first line of Sonisphere fest in istanbul for watching the big 4. It was the third and last day and I had no energy but I got up early and went to the queue at 7 am. I was in the first line when I got into the stadium and I didnt eat and drink to 1 PM when the show finished. I was so angry because a lot of ppl was there just because of Meatllica and they were saying craps about Slayer, Anthrax and ... . These ppl were who I dont like them to see in metal yep. I know that there were a lot of metal lovers out of stadium who hasnt money to come or maybe they were in the worst parts of stadium. But there was a girl in second day when Rammstein was there and she was really frightened! and she didnt watch the concert well because she was there because of his boy and she was shivering! Lest back to the third day when Metallica was there. I was listening to ppl around me, they were all talking about Metallica's ballets. They really didnt know that what the fuck is Big 4! They didnt know that they were here because of their Thrash shits and when Metallica started one of those girls beside me said to the other one "what would happen if James coma and take me from here!!" piss myself laughing, yep I was really angry when I was there with shits like them haha. But I still can love their albums and their songs and their Death Magnetic. I dont really care about stupid ppl who doesnt know what they are following. Gods know how many of them I wanted to kill that day!

Let's say I'm quite patient this evening, so I will answer despite what I said above. Written by Elyar S. on 27.09.2010 at 01:33 1- Most things are a matter of opinions but not all is. Some opinions are simply wrong. If someone tells you that, in his opinion, an elephant should be classified as a reptile, will you agree with him? 2- It's not a matter of being special or whatever. I'm an ordinary man with nothing special. It's a simple matter of being able to sort of things. Metal and mainstream music are not supposed to be the same. 3- Some famous bands still release good albums, yes. It's not a majority but there's no rule saying that an old band can't release a great album. It's just that it's not what happens most of the time. 4- Since when do we need a video to see if a band is commercial or not? Just listen to the music and read lyrics and you can guess it easily. So, for you, being commercial or not is strictly a matter of image and looks?

I dont like to bring an argument over here thats why I dont use quotes. but about those 4 things just my last words: 1 - Sophisticated words doesnt mean that someone is right or wrong, we are not talking about mathematics here so your question and your example was just crap. 2 - What is the meaning of underground? Scary? Weird? Special? or what the fuck ever? this is 2010 and governments are going to let ppl free more than 70's or 80's or even 90's. Now you can find some porn sites which are about shits and shittings and some of them has permissions. Underground is for middle ages not now. 3 - Im agree. 4 - Commercial means you need money, music videos are free (somehow) to selling albums as I know. You need advertise your album to be a commercial band. You need a lot of DVD's, Singles, Ep's and ... etc. And Anathema, MDB or Tiamat didnt use none of them. And about lyrics, Im one of those who are really into lyrics. MDB has the same lyrics almost in all of their albums and Tiamat too. But Anathema has changed so much nowadays. Their last album has really bad lyrics and thats the worst part of that album but it doesnt have nothing with Commercial things. They have changed thats why.

I forgot to add something about underground, Underground music was a label for none famous bands as I remember. Now some of those underground bands are famous in metal like Emprium for example, now they are not underground but they are still Empyrium and they are working for a new album. This time Blabbermouth talkded about them and all ppl know that what they are doing, they are not underground after this. It doesnt mean that they will be bad after this, it doesnt mean if they find a lot of new fans this time it means they are mainstream, it means they kicked ass before and now ppl know them much. And as I said before maybe someone buy their album from South Polar!

It's all in the head. People can't realize that band can't continue playing the same style for a decade or even two, three decades, and they can't deal with the fact that the old style is in most cases permanently gone. Change is necessary in life, and honestly, if I was 45 years old and got famous when I was in my teens, I would change my music style drastically. All in all, it's just that we can't get used to the new style, after already embracing the very music that got us to know them.

28.09.2010 - 04:56 Written by Kennoth on 28.09.2010 at 04:23 I think we can feel very sad when we realize we'll never hear a kind of music we love because the band has changed their style and will never release the kind of music we really loved again. In such cases, I don't throw the old albums in the garbage bin (I think it would be retarded to stop listening to something you love, only because you dislike or even hate the new material) but I stick to the old stuff, knowing that I can't like the new. There are many bands from whom I have only the older albums in my collection and I still listen to them and like them as much as before. I simply choose to ignore the new stuff and do as if it doesn't exist. I will never try to force music through me and pretend that I like something if I dislike it, only because I liked the band before. The way I see it is music must come to you and grab you. You should not have to make a special effort to like it. Sometimes, I'm not entirely sure about an album. When it happens, I try listening to it a few times (allowing some time between each listen) and in different moods, to be sure I like it or not. However, to do this, it must have grabbed my attention enough that I know it has a reasonable chance to grow on me. I won't loose my time with music when I know the chance that it could grow on me is nearly non-existent (I think this would be the best way to get tired of metal). If I hate it at first listen, I will always hate it.

Well, I basically agree with everything you just said. It all comes down to this: Written by RavenKing on 28.09.2010 at 04:56 However, variations are possible. It's possible for a band to slowly change their style over the years just enough for you to still like them, but at the same time to be pretty different than their original music. Also, if you like the old stuff, you should focus on it, but periodically checking up on the newer things would be a wise idea. You never know. Written by RavenKing on 28.09.2010 at 04:56 Of course. Sometimes I really want to like a band, but I just can't. Just isn't me. Some songs/bands are appropriate for specific moods, but you mostly know if you'll dump them after a few listens. Written by RavenKing on 28.09.2010 at 04:56 Well, I don't know about this one. I just think of myself for instance, how drastically my music taste has changed over the past years. Even over just one year. I can't help but to wonder how many of the bands I've already crossed over as bad I will grow to tolerate or even enjoy in a year or two.

28.09.2010 - 14:30 Written by Kennoth on 28.09.2010 at 05:06 I know what you mean. I think there's a matter of age into play here. I mean, after so many years of listening to metal and having explored pretty much every genre, I highly doubt my tastes will change. I know exactly what I like and don't like. For me, the change or evolution in tastes already happened when I definitely moved from Power/Speed Metal to Black Metal and Thrash. I mean, when I almost completely abandoned this kind of stuff in favor of more extreme metal. And I know there is no way back for me, even if there is some softer stuff I still enjoy, because the amount of Powermetal stuff I can't stand anymore is stunning.

Interesting topic. I will try to give in opinion. For me, I have switch to classical music for a long time because of this reason, that is I find that in metal/rock/pop , most band can only good in their first 5 albums, using their initial concept. Their music will peak only in this era and then naturally the musicians behind the band will want to move in to other exploration. When they entered this 'exploration' era, they will need to decided whether using the same band name (but different concept) or break apart. Reason for this pattern is because musically, (1) musician evolved and (2) in the limited metal vocabulary , it is just not ideal to create more than 5 albums using the same concept again and again.

As i see THE_BLACK_GOD has been banned again so me answer to the first post may go to no one... 1) i agree that some people have this attitude of disliking many new stuff. 2) i disagree though with the reasons you say that are behind this behavior: except for what has been said (style changes etc..) -many bands at the beginning of their "career" were much more fresh and created albums with innovations (i am talking about old bands), but even the bands who weren't innovative at all, they created powerful music due to their young age. -they had the chance to use all their ideas in the structures of the songs as they had not 8 (example) albums in their back and SHOULD not overwrite them. -so the result in the first 4-6 albums of many bands is usually more fresh, more enthusiastic etc... -also the line-up changes during the years distract many bands a bit. examples: IMO pestilence with the consuming impulse lineup and much more dying fetus in the 1998-2000 era where better that what they went after the lineup changes. -on the other hand, experience can some times be very useful in the long way to create an album and you see some "old" bands creating new little diamonds but it's true that it is not that usual... finally i agree on what you say about many people, not only here, who really seem to listen to albums very very fast. i listen to each album many many times in order to completely understand it but i know some people who have the "ability" to understand and criticize music that fast, it's just i dont believe that all who rate 30 albums in a month here have this ability. just the wrong attitude... As for me: i dont have any problem about new albums from older bands. i judge them as all the other albums, sometimes though i have more expectations from them, depending on the band and how much i appreciate them. but wait, i like ( or love tell it how you want) some "unknown" bands, some young bands which i believe that have a lot of potential. and i try some times to make them know to other people by "spamming" them! and do you know why??? because sometimes i've discovered new bands this way... and if you see my fav bands list i am not one of those guys who mention as fav bands only the unknown ones... SO IN LIFE DONT BE ABSOLUTE...

@Deadmeat; You summed it up nicely. I guess it all goes along with the saying "You have your entire life to write your first album, 2 years to write your second." I have a little theory of my own. There might be a lot of motivation to keep creating after you put out your first album, but after doing this 2-3 times I can see how it might just feel like routine after a while.

24.10.2010 - 00:22 Written by Deadmeat on 20.10.2010 at 10:53 Hit the nail on the head. What I think makes the biggest difference is that if muscians attempt to experiment with something thats completly breaking the mold, some people will get really pissed. Now this is gonna sound cliche, but look at Risk, "holy shit what a fucking sucky ass album" people say "sellout" they begin to chant. Now if you look at it from the artists point of view, a huge band like Megadeth, is basically stuck playing thrash forever. If they deviate from what is expected from them even slightly, watch the fuck out because shit is going to hit the fan. I think we as metal fans put a lot of pressure on bands that we really enjoy, we want them to keep making the music that we love. However there are two caveats to this: 1) the music must be at least somewhat similar to what that attracted us to the band in the first place. & 2) It has to be to our liking, remaining musically similar not withstanding. We as fans demand that bands continue making music the way that they do. However we also demand new material, and are not satisfied by the simple regurgitation of the same thing over and over again. But if the musical broadening that we require goes ass over tin cups, everybody flips shit and brands them sellouts, unTr000, what have you. Its a fine line that they must tread, and some older band i.e. Iron Maiden, just cant seem to walk the line like they used to.

Good metal from many years ago was good because the artists were actually original and in their prime. Most modern attempts from old artists are strained and sound pretty bad from what they used to make.

That's not right! It's according to the band. For example, I prefer old school Metallica. On the other hand, I can't stand Immortal's early albums, and I only listen to At The Heart Of Winter and the albums after it.

I may have to toss my boat in with the older generation of albums. Though, there are plenty of new albums that are released that are pretty fantastic as well. ... Not a very good conclusion, haha. I dunno, Iron Maiden has been making albums for 30 years, with ups and downs. I loved Seventh Son of a Seventh Son and Somewhere in Time, probably my favorite albums of theirs from the 'older' generation. More recently though we have albums like... The Dance of Death, which to me was just 'okay', but certainly not terrible. A Matter of Life and Death, which I thought was fantastic. And then The Final Frontier, which, honestly, I didn't really enjoy all that much. Albums will be good or bad from the older generation of bands as time goes on, just like any other group. All that matters is personal preference.

I actually disagree with the nature of this thread and the suggestion that people find it hard to enjoy new albums by old bands. Its just that many bands set their standard early and often fail to repeat it. Many people often listen to the album in such situation looking for sound that compares closely to their best works. However this doesn't mean we can't enjoy the album for what it is. Is still listen to Megadeth, and I must say the last four albums have built a new era for the band that they and their fans are generally very happy with.

Well, why the newer albums by older bands can't be enjoyed.......when the band puts out a record that we deem as "Classic", we expect all other future releases to live up to them, like we set the bar high. Plus, sometimes the band just plain sells out.

I'm not sure it's a case of people not liking an album because it's new (although I am sure there are some people that do that!), if you get into a band it's generally because of the type of music they are playing at the time rather than any future direction they may go in. We have to encourage musicians to experiment with new styles, we wouldn't have metal at all if people hadn't experimented and pushed the boundaries but not everyone will like the new direction and it well end up with the band losing original fans following their newer music but also could introduce the world of metal to someone new. It's always going to be a case of you win some you lose some and who knows perhaps a band you don't like today will experiment and come up with something new that melts your mind!
