Who do you think are the most passionate metal singers? Ones who you can tell by listening to them and seeing them, that they are just exuding emotions.

Yeah, I pretty much have to agree on Roy Khan.
This guy is simply amazing, especially live, where he used to improvise at times. He expresses emotions so well in his voice, it's unbelievable. His facial expressions also add a whole different level of emotion to the band's stage presence. Just watch this video. If that's not passion, than I don't know what is . . .

Bruce Dickinson (#1), Phil Anselmo (SUPA DUPPA passionate), Ian Gillan, Lizzy Borden, Blackie Lawless, Axl Rose, Bon Scott, Dave Mustaine (Early years), Nergal....just a few I remember, most of them are from bands I don't like but I just admit they are true when they're singing!!

I think it was a one off performance, but Angela Gossow on Rise Of the Tyrant was awsome. She sounded like she was going to cry on some songs and like she was gonna blow her vocal cords on the others.

Primordial vocalist, hands down. He seems to put his very soul into every note he sings. Just listen to "Heathen Tribes".

When I sing, I cry quite regularly, and if I was in an actual band playing in public, I think Id find it very hard to keep my emotions in check.

Angela's performances on songs like "Vultures" are definitely emotional.

I'd also add Corey Glover from Living Colour, and Chuck Billy from Testament as passionate metal singers.

Yes there is. By agreeing on a common definition of the term passionate. The Original post suggest it's a singer that exudes emotions, no matter the kind. So, by posting, we simply answer the question: Wich one does it the best?.

The Original post suggest it's a singer that exudes emotions.

Not everyone is capable of identifying certain emotions. So a Tarja pours her guts out with heart-wrenching sorrow...she might be seen as an annoyingly dramatic pop singer because they don't understand what it is to hear that kind of an emotion in a performance; whereas an aggressive, spiteful output by a Randy Blythe might be seen as a lame attempt at growling by others who don't truly comprehend anger in music.

That aside, there's still the matter of different emotions playing differently on others. Nattramn (Silencer) is a perfect example of this. Some people find his screams hilarious and overdone, others think it's one of the most expressive, passionate performances of all time. It's a purely opinionated question that will garner purely opinionated answers, because (even with a majority ruling or consensus or whatever) my ears don't hear what yours hear, my brain doesn't register what your brain registers, and the hairs on my neck don't always rise when yours rise.

Isn't that the fun part of a conversation? Knowing what makes us tick? For examples my neck hair rises when I hear Dio and Mamsteins cover of Dream on because of how remorsefull and sincere it sounds, but I also get the chills when I put on Omerta by Lamb Of God because of the sense pf honor and cold blooded vengence that oozes from it.

I always thought Tony Kakko of Sonata Arctica came across as emotional and passionate. Seems like Tommy J of Reinxeed is taking his place these days and feels passionate and fun at the same time. I agree of course wih Roy Khan, and I'd mention Tommy Karevik from Seventh Wonder as well. Let's face it though, there are a ton of amazing vocalists that exhude what someone might label "passionate" and it is a fairly broad term. Hell, I think David DeFeis of Virgin Steele is passionate, but most would probably call it presence or something.

Oops...I didn't mean to mislead anyone. I don't think there is a way to objectively determine that fact. My bloom quote pretty much sums that up.

Well it's music we're talking about, so of course it's all about the listeners taste. I misred your first post. I thought you were having problems with interpreting a term as loose as passionate.

@Troy: I have to agree with you. The passion and emotion (or lack of it) that someone puts into a song can be very difficult for anyone other than the singer themselves to truly get, or understand. Therefore, personal perception and observation plays a large part in viewing a singer as "passionate" or not. Like, some could view Corey Taylor being someone who puts a lot of venom and passion into his vocals, whereas others just think he's an whining, nu metal oik. Or some could think that Halford's performance on say "Dreamer Deciever" is very emotional and haunting, while to others, it's just high pitched caterwauling...

That's not to say it's impossible to see/hear genuine passion in a vocalist's performance, and sometimes certain people just don't "get" certain types of singing, so it goes right over their heads...

Aha, someone who dares to name Barney!
I second him. If you've seen ND live you know what we're talking about.
No nonsense, no image, no headbanging"cause we need to", just hypercrazy jumping and ADHD-esque movements while"singing" the lungs out your miserable body!

Try singing the last verse from Coma by Guns 'n' Roses. It chokes me up every time.

I have sung that song many times! xD And yep, that last verse always gets to me when I sing along to it. It's a very intense section of the song, that drains physical and emotional energy when I sing it... I actually can't see how you could sing that part without getting emotional. "Coma" is my fave GnR song, and it's definitely their most underrated. It's one of rock's most legendary epics to me.

I know they are not the extreme brand of metal that you are looking for but they are easily one of the best live bands that I have ever seen. I have been too six different shows from these guys and every one was better than before. Greg Puciato from The Dillinger Escape Plan. So energetic and passionate when he sings.

I agree there's no truly objective way to say if a guy is "passionate" or not in singing, but for me at least, one definitely has stood out recently, and that is the vocalist of the band Hell. They only have one album out yet, but damn that dude is awesome.

His completely over the top dramatic screams are just amazing. I would dare to say he is one of the very few true Extreme singers out there, one that can get into a certain emotion and just sound like Satan himself is phisically tormenting him while he recites the lyrics. The only other metal vocalists who imo can do that are Halford and the guy from Primordial.

NOT.

Hm, I've always considered Floor Jansen to be an extremely passionate singer, giving herself 113% out in the song, any song she sings. Also Anneke Van Giersbergen, in the past with The Gathering she brough a special touch to their songs, and even nowadays when she collaborates with various metal musicians, I always get the feeling she releases herself in the song.

As of guys, I'm not quite sure. I like Johan Hegg, because when he sings I think he sounds like a real viking. I also like Sigurd Wongraven - Satyr, but more than on cd, his live act. I think he's one of the most charismatic frontmans I have seen live, you can really see him blend with music when he's on stage. ICS Vortex is one of those, who I think bringspower and energy alongside his strong vocals in the songs he's singing.
